baby hug

While I was working on my book and making a baby of my own, a couple of cousins had babies. I felt bad that I didn't get to make sweaters for the new little ones. Last night, in one of those moments where baby gives mommy just what she needs to make it through another day, baby L let me get started on a sweater for one of them.

you can tell the sun's gone down because she's not screaming!

If L lets me, I'll be making another Tea for Two sweater from Louisa Harding's Miss Bea's Rainy Day. I really enjoyed knitting the one I made last year and the final sweater is so sweet with the hugs and kisses cable pattern. I'm using some Jo Sharp classic wool in cherry red that I had leftover from a project for the book. I can say from experience that the Jo Sharp yarn knits up really nice, especially in cables. (Oooh, what could that book project be?? Tee hee.)

Oh baby, it feels good to knit a little bit again!

so sweet!

Yeah for knitting with babies! I hope that the sleeping keeps up!

Posted by: Johanna at March 21, 2007 11:08 AM

Oh!!! What a precious picture, what a precious baby.

Posted by: earthchick at March 21, 2007 11:19 AM

She's such a sweet baby. Glad she sleeps at night!

Posted by: Kathode Ray Tube at March 21, 2007 11:19 AM

What a sweet picture. But I have to ask; did you make the sweater you have on? It's great!

Posted by: Dava at March 21, 2007 11:33 AM

Precious photo.
What a tease about the book! How much longer is it? I have mine pre-ordered. Is it May?
It is worth the wait.

Posted by: Miss Scarlett at March 21, 2007 11:35 AM

What a beautiful little girl! Lucky mom to get sleep at night, wouldn't want it the other way around.

Posted by: Lara at March 21, 2007 11:41 AM

We've been through this before, I think, but what about the sweater that you're wearing? Is this another Otto find?

Posted by: colleen at March 21, 2007 11:41 AM

Aww, what a sweet moment! I loved that x's and o's sweater, excited to hear that you're making another one!

Posted by: C at March 21, 2007 11:59 AM

any updates on the sock exchange?

Posted by: k at March 21, 2007 12:04 PM

adorable picture!

Posted by: julia at March 21, 2007 12:12 PM

She is precious. That is a lovely sweater. I hope baby L gives you plenty more knitting time. :)

Posted by: Samantha at March 21, 2007 12:15 PM

She's so sweet, the poor little tyke. It looks like Mommy's arms are the most comfortable place in the world for her.

That is some dedicated knitting....

Posted by: LaurieM at March 21, 2007 12:17 PM

The sweater was one of my few maternity splurges. I got it on super sale (at about 30% of it's original price - but still pricey) at Pea in the Pod. It's biiiig, but I really love it, and I can still wear it as outerwear even postpartum.

Posted by: ALISON at March 21, 2007 12:19 PM

Wow, L sure does look like her big brothers!

Posted by: Tammy at March 21, 2007 12:31 PM

Wow, what a dedicated knitter you are! It's got to be almost as refreshing as sleep, right? =) That's a baby picture to save!

Posted by: carrie at March 21, 2007 12:42 PM

Ooooh, she looks so sweet & cuddly. Glad she gives you a little break from the screaming. :)

Posted by: Amanda at March 21, 2007 12:51 PM

Aaah, I'm glad you are settling down a bit into a routine that allows you some knitting time. Yeah!

Love, love, LOVE that picture. She is so sweet!

Posted by: knittingnurse at March 21, 2007 12:52 PM

Oh, what a sweetie! (And at least you know her lungs work!) Looking forward to seeing the new sweater and the new book! :-)

Posted by: Mary at March 21, 2007 12:59 PM

ooh so cute. Babies just grow up too quickly. A moment to cherish!

Hi, Alison.
I'm delurking to offer a suggestion from my time as the mother of a screamer. My youngest, for the first year or so, had to be TOUCHING ME ALL THE TIME. I mean, the furthest away I was allowed to be was me sitting in a chair with him on the floor, holding my foot. Nearly drove me around the bend, I can tell you. In the end, the only way to get anything done around the house was to wear him in a sling.
This is the brand I bought:
http://www.babaslings.com/
They're an Australian company, but you could easily find one in the U.S. They are absolutely brilliant, you can even breastfeed hands-free.
The good news is, the man in question will be four next month and is almost too self-sufficient. If he keeps going at this rate, I'll be out of a job.
Best of luck,
Kate

What a cute picture! Do you actually knit with Baby L on your lap? And did you knit the cardigan you're wearing?

Posted by: Dorothee at March 21, 2007 3:07 PM

Hello Alison. A mother of 8 here (including twin boys) with a bit of advice: babyslings. I believe it's the newest issue of Mothering Magazine that is devoted to slinging your wee one. Check it out. My favorite by far is the Maya Wrap...it grows with the babe.

Posted by: stephanie at March 21, 2007 3:40 PM

I wanted to say thank you for knitting the Geek Spiral Pullover some time ago. I started one for my niece and then let it go. I think I'm nervous about the seaming. Yours looks cute, so I picked it up again. Thanks. :)

Maybe once I feel confident about seaming, I'll pick up that book. I like sweaters in the photos.

Posted by: Sacha at March 21, 2007 6:47 PM

I was going to suggest a Baby Björn. They are different than a sling. Guess it's in what you like.

Posted by: Sandy at March 21, 2007 7:09 PM

Oh, man, Alison-
sling that little darling! I got my little monster a sling right after his 2nd surgery,w hen he was at his most screamy and clingy..wonders, I tell you! He started "eh-ing" for it when he was sick. He was just so happy in it. People called him my little Joey. Abbyslane.com makes some NICE ones...even pattern. She does amazing work! She did mine! Finding Nemo!!

Posted by: Laura at March 21, 2007 9:19 PM

L. looks so relaxed as only babies can!

I love Jo Sharp wool, even though I try to use NZ wool when I can, and used the cherry red in a hat for my oldest son recently. He chose it which surprised me as his favourite colour is blue - but he does look very cute in the hat and the reds bring out his gorgeous brown eyes. He looks very mischievious in it.

Looking forward to your book as well, and to knit-along when you and L. are up to it *g*

Posted by: Enna at March 21, 2007 9:23 PM

She's adorable. Just a happy content little one in her mommy's arms. There is nothing like that.

Posted by: Lynn at March 21, 2007 9:54 PM

Baby L is so beautiful! I hope she stops screaming all day soon. I was a screaming baby (my mom still talks about it and I'm 43!), and now I have a great big voice for public speaking and singing.

Posted by: Brenda at March 21, 2007 11:11 PM

So sweet, she makes my 1 and half year old look like a giant to me! Hang in there, and remember how fast it really does go by. You'll blink and L will be as big as your boys. Enjoy her, especially during such beautiful peaceful moments as you've captured right there.

Posted by: Danielle at March 22, 2007 12:49 AM

another vote for sling! My eldest was a screamer too, he was like one of those dolls that if you tipped them they cried *rolls eyes* the ONLY way I got any peace was to wear a sling.

Your little one is so so pretty and it does feel great to do something "normal" after baby doesnt it :)

Posted by: cairi ross at March 22, 2007 5:10 AM

L is just prescious.

Posted by: Orli at March 22, 2007 5:20 AM

Knitting with a newborn! Amazing!! As for the screaming... One of my twins was AWFUL. Wearing him DID help, but wearing an off-the-charts-sized baby while caring for another baby and a 2-year-old was physically exhausting. Once he was old enough, a bouncy chair indoors and a regular baby swing outdoors worked wonders!!! In our case, Zantac for reflux helped a lot too.

Posted by: marilyn at March 22, 2007 9:21 AM

She is so cute! She'll be knitting before you know it.

Posted by: Michelle at March 22, 2007 9:26 AM

Sacha, check out my last comment on the baby geek post for some info on how I seamed that sweater. Don't be afraid, you can do it!!

Posted by: ALISON at March 22, 2007 11:42 AM

oh! baby L is beautiful... my wee one will be one (he he he say that one 3X fast!) next month .... just 3 weeks away.*sigh*

Posted by: jeanie at March 23, 2007 7:36 PM

Here's another vote for the Maya wrap. I carreied my fourth child, (now 4 everywhere in it for a year). I made my own with their instructions:

She's so beautiful!

Posted by: Titiracious at March 28, 2007 1:15 PM

I've been knitting baby things for a cousin's baby, and your new little one reminds me that yes, babies really ARE that small! L is precious. My cousin is having a boy this time around, so I'm a little bummed that I didn't get to knit anything pink and girly.

A red wool sweater with cables? If it's the sweater I'm thinking of, I'm going to die of happiness. PLEASE tell me there's adult sizes in your book. I already have it pre-ordered...
