how do you knit?

This is how I knit yesterday. After finding some black wool, I popped wee one in the sling, strapped on a shopping bag to hold my yarn, cast on for a Hufflepuff house hat and walked a rut in the floor.

nice. that's how I am on the playground - except the yarn's in the stroller and there's no baby on my front! Maybe you need a sling with a pocket?

Posted by: thea at April 24, 2007 9:22 AM

YOU sure look good! Congrats!

Posted by: Pam A at April 24, 2007 9:36 AM

That is impressive, I like your determination to knit.

Posted by: jiva at April 24, 2007 10:02 AM

That's a great idea! How long do you think it will work for? I also like the idea of a sling with a pocket.

Posted by: Stephanie at April 24, 2007 10:07 AM

ok, you sure look good for someone who just had a baby. I think I'm going to try that workout routine!

Posted by: Monica at April 24, 2007 10:10 AM

I often stuff a ball of yarn in the cargo pocket of my pants or under my right arm and carry around a sock or hat project. It's so nice to know I am not alone.

Posted by: kristin at April 24, 2007 10:26 AM

Now thats what I call multi-tasking!

Posted by: Cynder at April 24, 2007 10:39 AM

Very impressive multi-tasking! Good job :)

Posted by: Meadow at April 24, 2007 11:01 AM

Necessity is the mother of invention. I forsee a baby sling w/attatched project bag in your future. ;)

Posted by: Jody at April 24, 2007 11:04 AM

Sweet. You can barely see the wee one there. Enjoy that she's not big enough to grab and tangle your yarn yet!

Posted by: Jess at April 24, 2007 11:19 AM

Great idea...and can I just say you look amazing. I bet the recoery was a wee bit different then the boys.

Posted by: Darci at April 24, 2007 11:32 AM

Yep, that looks familiar to me!!! I did a lot of that. Socks and hats are just perfect for sling knitting. Take a walk outdoors with your sling knitting and you will amaze passers-by!!!!

Posted by: Elinor at April 24, 2007 11:42 AM

You look AMAZING, so soon after baby! Quite industrious too!

Posted by: Angi at April 24, 2007 11:51 AM

Heh, that's just about exactly how I knit these days. Wow, let me echo the comments on how incredible you look so soon after having the baby! I'm 3 months PP and...well...let's just say I'm not looking as good as you!

Posted by: Bertha at April 24, 2007 11:57 AM

he he, i remember those days!

Posted by: cori w at April 24, 2007 12:08 PM

Did you get an ache in your side? I seem to always get one.

Posted by: wendy at April 24, 2007 12:10 PM

great multi-tasking!

Posted by: Kelly at April 24, 2007 12:13 PM

Got to love the sling, it's the only way I got anything done when my son was a baby.

Posted by: Ginger at April 24, 2007 12:16 PM

Ahh, the old rut in the floor trick... our rut was around the diningroom table and through the living room in a figure 8. Those were the days...

Posted by: Ann at April 24, 2007 12:46 PM

You totally need a Go Knit pouch from these guys http://knowknits.com/. I have one and it works great for when I'm walking a rut in the floor with the grandbaby!!

Posted by: Michelle at April 24, 2007 12:56 PM

This is why I knit socks. The yarn fits nicely in a small drawstring bag that I have on my wrist while I have the baby in a sling, Moby wrap or pouch. I've also been known to strap the baby on my back and knit with my yarn in the pocket of an apron.

Posted by: Dana at April 24, 2007 12:58 PM

First of all, you do look great - especially for so soon after having a baby. And the GoKnit bag or one of those yarn ball bracelets sounds like a good idea. Like Kristin, I frequently put a ball of sock yarn in my pocket & knit wherever I am.

Posted by: Donna at April 24, 2007 1:06 PM

where did you get your sling, do you like it?

I found out last friday I'm having a girl :)

Posted by: pixie at April 24, 2007 1:20 PM

Very impressive!

Posted by: Mary at April 24, 2007 1:49 PM

However did you manage to knit when you had TWO infants? A bilateral sling?

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at April 24, 2007 1:49 PM

I remember doing a lot of that. Now I can't keep my daughter's hands out of my yarn. You're looking great, by the way!

Posted by: julie at April 24, 2007 2:00 PM

Yes! Knitting with a baby CAN be done!! And I agree with everyone else -- you look fabulous!

Posted by: Tonya Wagner at April 24, 2007 2:00 PM

If only my wee one liked the sling! She SCREAMS when I try to put her in it. Luckily, she's pretty happy falling asleep in the bouncy seat or her carrier, so I do have some time to knit!

Posted by: Melanie at April 24, 2007 2:17 PM

Wow, I'm impressed. That takes coordination and knitterly determination.

I usually wear an ass-groove ever deeper into the family room couch.

Posted by: seejayneknit at April 24, 2007 2:32 PM

When my daughter (and I) got the hang of nursing, I would often pop her in the sling and knit away. The sling was one of the best parenting tools!!

Posted by: beth at April 24, 2007 2:34 PM

I've have been there done that! LOL! Oh the memories it brings back. I have also done the same thing with books and other things I just needed to do!
Enjoy making the hat and the memories.

Posted by: Brandie at April 24, 2007 2:35 PM

Oooh! What kind of sling is that? Wonderful!

Posted by: natalie at April 24, 2007 2:47 PM

Oh, I remember those times. Isn't it nice when they are so small?

Posted by: Helga at April 24, 2007 2:47 PM

That looks like a Hot Sling. Is it? I have one in black which both of my girls have HATED so far. (In fact, if anyone wants to buy a size small Hot Sling from me cheap, feel free to e-mail me and we can work something out.) These days I'm using a Moby Wrap and a japanese style carrier. I think I may steal the idea of knitting while slinging the wee one. Now if I could just keep my 21 month old occupied for longer than 30 seconds at a time, I could get even more knitting done!!

And yes, I would agree that you look great, Alison! Truly, I think the reason you look great after your third baby is because you're so busy trying to chase the other two and nurse the third that you have no time to eat!!!

And nursing burns upwards of 900 calories a day, which I always use as a selling point to my clients who are on the fence about nursing. :)

And Alison, if you tell us your house is also spotless, none of us will be friends with you anymore. :) :)

Posted by: Alison at April 24, 2007 2:49 PM

I wish that would work with a toddler!

Posted by: Emily at April 24, 2007 2:52 PM

Oh, I remember those sling days! What nostalgia for a mother whose daughter is turning four in two months... Enjoy, cause they grow really fast.

Posted by: Asa at April 24, 2007 2:53 PM

Hey, that's three things in one: taking care of a baby, knitting and exercising! That IS quite amazing!

Posted by: Petra at April 24, 2007 3:07 PM

If I were still slingin' babies, that's exactly how I'd knit :D

Posted by: Rosemary at April 24, 2007 3:38 PM

What could be more rewarding than knitting and being close to the wee one?

Posted by: Phoebe at April 24, 2007 3:50 PM

I used to do that while waiting for my hubby to get out of work. I'd walk around the mall.

I used to use my braid to hold my sock on DPNs while at the park too. When I had to push the swing or whatever.

Now a days, I get... "no mommy, no knitting." LOL, the joys of language skills.

Posted by: Indigo at April 24, 2007 4:18 PM

You give me hope! I have a sling and am hoping to be able to hold baby and knit at the same time.

What kind of sling do you have? It looks so comfortable.

Posted by: Samantha at April 24, 2007 4:29 PM

I used to do almost everything with a baby in a sling! My oldest had to be held pretty much constantly, so a sling was the only way I got free use of both arms at the same time.

Posted by: Kathy at April 24, 2007 4:33 PM

Aaaaww-how well I remember the baby sling days. Now I'm feeling wistful!

Posted by: Holly at April 24, 2007 4:33 PM

You could paste my head on that picture with my last one. M would not sleep during the day unless she was being held. I too vote for a sling with a pocket. We could market it to the muggles as being for keys or a phone, but we would really know what it was for!

Posted by: MommyknitsJen at April 24, 2007 4:34 PM

I knit with one of the twins on my lap while the other one sleeps. Sometimes I cradle one in my arm, prop up the bottle and knit around them.

Posted by: Wanett at April 24, 2007 5:23 PM

yes, i'd like to know what kind of sling you have as well! it looks comfortable and easy to use.

Posted by: gleek at April 24, 2007 5:23 PM

The sling is from Hotslings. They make some lovely slings and the basic ones (like I have) aren't that expensive.

Posted by: ALISON at April 24, 2007 5:28 PM

Wish that technique worked with 1-year-old twins! How did you knit when your twins were small??

Posted by: marilyn at April 24, 2007 5:58 PM

When the boys were small, I was still just a beginning knitter, so I didn't do THAT much knitting. I pretty much waited until they were sleeping well at night and knitted for a little while before going to bed myself. Then, later, there was naptime knitting. And then, much much later, playground knitting.

Posted by: ALISON at April 24, 2007 6:10 PM

I have done that SO many times!!! Aren't slings just the best thing ever???

Posted by: Kim at April 24, 2007 6:30 PM

I've had to do something similar. Only I had a baby slung over one shoulder while I rocked in the glider and knit. I did get easier though.

Posted by: Cambria at April 24, 2007 6:43 PM

i knit like that quite a bit! except minus the baby. and with the yarn stuck under my arm.

ps - thanks for your words of encouragement on the figure 8 cast on for toe up socks - i've nailed it!

Posted by: jen c at April 24, 2007 6:48 PM

Aren't slings the greatest things ever?

Posted by: Stephanie at April 24, 2007 6:51 PM

You really do look fantastic! I need to learn to knit and walk at the same time!

Posted by: Chelsey at April 24, 2007 7:34 PM

Wow! I gained more weight during your pregnancy than you did. YOU LOOK FABULOUS.

How do I knit? I try to sneak in a bit of knitting here at work but people keep asking me to do things. Oh well.

zz.

Posted by: ZeldaZunk at April 24, 2007 9:09 PM

Now that's multitasking! You kept both baby and mommy happy while getting your exercise and you'll have a hat to show for it. Impressive.

Posted by: LaurieM at April 24, 2007 10:41 PM

I'm really impressed. Even though I carried my boys around in the pouch, they were too big to knit around. I can hardly knit and walk at the same time anyway. I always had to wait until the baby napped, and then see if I could stay awake.

Yay for slings! Good for you!

Posted by: Norah at April 25, 2007 8:33 AM

Good thing wee one likes the sling! More knitting time for you!!

I've been knitting quite a bit like that in recent days (minus the baby in the sling). I've been getting ready for my local march of dimes WalkAmerica so I've been sticking my yarn in a cloth bag on my shoulder and knitting while I walk! I'll be knitting a preemie cap on Sunday while I walk for preemies!

Posted by: Elizabeth at April 25, 2007 3:22 PM

Ahhh, I'm glad I'm not alone. I have a Moby wrap that my 6 week old loves- it's a pain to get on but once she's in it, she'll sleep for hours! Now if only I could master the art of knitting while breastfeeding...

Posted by: Impressionknits at April 26, 2007 6:08 AM

i am not only impressed with that, but am impressed as to how flat your stomach looks!!
wow!!!!

Posted by: joy at April 26, 2007 10:37 PM

I actually knit any where I am...even the gym. When I walk on the treadmill I knit socks! Really, started with the cast on and away I went. Here is a link to the post I did on my blog

Ah, yes, the sling! I remember those days. I could actually sit after my guy fell asleep in his, and I would get this weird cramp in my shoulders from having to hold my arms way out in front of me (due to the huge lump on my front who didn't like having my knitting hands or arms rested on him). I was fine as long as I didn't try to cable!

BTW - are you a celebrity? I didn't think it was possible for normal people with normal lives to look like you do that fast post-baby! Lucky!

Posted by: Chrissy at April 28, 2007 9:47 AM

Way to go, slinging and knitting! I mastered the art of nursing my baby and knitting socks on DPNs at the same time. Don't try that with older, wiggly babies, though!
