sockapalooza plan b: how sockapalooza goes totally cool

We broke Blogger. Well, not exactly but sockapalooza four is too big for them. They wrote "no limits" on their info page and, silly me, I took 'em at their word. I guess they figured no one would be crazy enough to try to make a blog with over 1,000 people! The official word from them is a simple "we can't handle a blog this size". Okey-dokey. So we need a plan b.

Enter hubby who had the coooolest idea! Have you ever heard of Digg? It's this genius site/system that allows users to post links to web stories and stuff online that they dig. Users can check out the list of all the things posted AND they can vote on the ones they dig the most. The links with more votes move up the list and those with fewer votes move down. Neat, huh? Since it's a system that is designed for tons of users to share info in a manageable way, it's just the sort of thing we need. Now the real Digg is for technology/media types of discussions. What we need is our own little knit-digg system.

Enter master webmaster who installed a program for us! If you're technology savvy, check it out and get started submitting links to your own updates and reading and voting on links posted by others.

Here's a quick how-to (I'll post a longer how-to this weekend for everyone else!):
Go to the pligg system. You'll need to register with a user name and password. Once you've created yourself as a user you'll see the option to "submit a new story". Enter the URL (be sure you link directly to the permalink of your individual post so folks can really find your update). The system will check the link and bring back a title. You can edit that and write a description (to get folks to visit your link!). Select sockapalooza as your category and submit it! I've added some other categories in there if you want to share any non-sockapalooza links with everyone too.

"Published News" is the list of links that have several votes already and are officially popular. They will be shown on the front page. You can see the most popular links listed in order of number of votes in "Top Today". The "Upcoming News" is links people have posted that need more votes. Check 'em out and send 'em to the front page if you think they're interesting.

(PS - Even if you're not in sockapalooza, you can still check out the pligg system, post links and vote on interesting stories. This way you can have all the fun too without having to do any of the knitting!)

Let's play around with it a little and see if it'll be a fun system for us to use to share our updates and keep track of who's knitting cool stuff!

wow! Knitters break blogger! Who knew!

Posted by: Timothy at May 4, 2007 12:28 PM

And most muggles say "they aren't that many people who knit these days". I feel bad that knitters broke blogger BUT it's good to know that there are MANY knitters out there! Sock on!

Posted by: Cole at May 4, 2007 12:34 PM

I guess that this is the kick in the pants that I ned to start a blog. Wordpress or Blogger? Any thoughts?

Posted by: Darci at May 4, 2007 12:40 PM

ooh, I'm totally a Digger already, so I'm loving this! Yay for plan b and the webmaster. :) Thanks for doing all of this!

Posted by: Carrie at May 4, 2007 12:42 PM

Ha! Sock knitters bring Blogger to its knees. Thanks for searching out an alternative!

Once we're up and running on pligg, should we unsubscribe from the Blogger Sockapalooza list?

Posted by: Karen B. at May 4, 2007 12:52 PM

I went ahead and signed up and put up a link to my most recent Sock post. Seems pretty easy to use.

thanks for doing all this work to keep things afloat!

Posted by: whichy at May 4, 2007 12:53 PM

Yeah, Karen, you can if you don't think you'll need or want to use it. It'll probably make it easier for the knitters without blogs to use. Thanks!

Posted by: ALISON at May 4, 2007 12:57 PM

Wow, how interesting! I hadn't signed up for the blogger blog yet because I was already thinking "traffic jam". Maybe this will be just the right thing!! Can't wait to check it out! :)

Posted by: Laura at May 4, 2007 1:01 PM

Wow, breaking blogger. Who knew. I'm new to digg, but I'm game to figure it out!

Posted by: Jennifer at May 4, 2007 1:05 PM

Hey Alison! Thanks for the comment.

Since blogger just couldn't handle the knitting power, hopefully this new system will work well in its place. : )

Posted by: Caroline at May 4, 2007 1:07 PM

What about some sort of BBS (bulletin-board system)? If you've got a hosting service that has one-click installs, it might have the BBS software "phpbb" (http://www.phpbb.com/) available... Or you could go with a forum hosted off-site, like they offer at http://www.forumco.com ... Just an idea.

Posted by: Liz at May 4, 2007 1:18 PM

i've registered. that part wasn't hard at all. i don't have any posts about my sock yet, so i didn't put anything in yet, but gimme time, lol.

Posted by: minnie at May 4, 2007 1:53 PM

for anyone like Darci thinking of doing their own blog...
I like WordPress better. but if you're a member of a number of KAL blogs and have a blogger account, you might prefer it.

since both are free, give them both a bit of a trial and see which works with you better.

ok, off to play with the new thing.

Posted by: Christy at May 4, 2007 1:58 PM

Clearly more proof that knitters are taking over the world, things need to be invented for us!

Posted by: Natalie at May 4, 2007 1:59 PM

Hi Alison,
I won't have time for the sockapalooza this year as any knitting time this summer will be spent finishing a Dale sweater and my first lace shawl project. While I was waiting to start/continue these two projects, I did make a bookmark from your Charmed Knits book. Great book! I put a photo on my newly created blog.
If there was a StarWars knitting book, my husband would be drooling asking me to make him one of everything :-)

I may be missing something, but how will sockapaloozers without blogs be able to submit to the pligg site?

Posted by: limedragon :-: Harriet at May 4, 2007 3:23 PM

So...um, first off, I have to be straight and say I haven't really tried this. I've been to digg in the past, and didn't like it, but there's never been a sock on the line before. Here's the thing, I have to admit i'm confused: what's to keep us from always seeing the same "popular" stories over and over? Won't the little fish get pushed aside? I have read every post on the blogger site so far. I don't understand how this site will really work. It seems like a popularity contest, a way to heirarchically label something, not a forum where everyone can contribute.

I'm open to trying it out. It's just not the type of attitude that I like to promote...

Posted by: Leyna at May 4, 2007 3:44 PM

Good question, Harriet. Knitters without blogs can continue to use the Blogger blog - once the activity on it dies down and the number of members is reduced, it should work fine. My master webmaster also has hooked us up with a little invite somewhere else for free blogging, so stay tuned!

Posted by: ALISON at May 4, 2007 4:48 PM

Hey Leyna, I understand your concern, but it's an amazingly fair system. The older popular posts fall to the bottom of the front page over time (thereby decreasing the number of folks who see them) and new popular posts are at the top to give them a chance to get more readership. In the upcoming news section, it's really a level playing field - whatever links to interesting content is going to get votes. You can even send the link to a friend to have them vote for it.

Don't think of it as a contest. It's a tool. All the posts are still there. But with 1000 participants, there are few people who can read them all. Essentially the voting feature is doing the same thing the sock sisters and I did last time by highlighting the more interesting posts. And this is actually a more democratic way of determining what the more interesting posts are.

I have already visited a half dozen sites today that I'd never seen before and probably wouldn't have gotten to just by browsing the Blogger blog or clicking on links in the giant participant list. I feel like I've really gained some better access to what people are doing. I hope you'll feel that way too after you try it out.

Not sock related, but my book just came, my book just came!
Sadly, I can't get into it until Mother's Day, since it's meant to be a gift for me. Not too much longer to wait.

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at May 4, 2007 5:23 PM

I like Pligg! I think it makes it more fun for Sockapaloozah stalkers (who otherwise can't comment).

Posted by: Seanna Lea at May 4, 2007 5:36 PM

Just a thought... and I haven't been to Digg yet... but what about remaining anonymous?

Posted by: gina at May 4, 2007 7:09 PM

Teehee, Sockapalooza is turning into a tech adventure, at least for me! The Pligg sign up was easy-peasy. Now to generate some content, ahem.

If folk with blogs can post on their own blogs and cross-post on Pligg, I suppose blogless folk can post on the Sockapalooza4 group blog and cross-post on Pligg, right? So no one has to miss any fun!

Posted by: Ina at May 4, 2007 8:45 PM

Wow...breaking blogger...very cool. Another legend to talk about in the knitting community. I'm going to go pligg out. TG for tech hubby.

Posted by: Phoebe at May 5, 2007 7:28 AM

Alison (and webmasters), thanks so much for coming up with something that actually works. I tried posting at the blogger site many, many times. And the one time it DID go through, I had gotten an error message (just like when it failed to go), so I was shocked to see the message show up.

I don't completely understand the Pligg concept yet. The voting seems odd to me, but I'm opne to learning it. The main trouble I'm having so far is that I'm so used to having posts organized in chronological order, and I don't completely know where to find things yet.

Posted by: Amy at May 5, 2007 9:17 AM

I'm liking Pligg better, although I'm still not completely sold on the voting part. I think my dislike may have to do with how they present the votes--the number is the first thing you see, making it something to focus on, rather than something secondary.

But you and the others who have left comments on Pligg make some really good points--it all comes down to what kind of attitude we have. On the one hand, I don't want to seem like I'm choosing some posts over others. On the other hand, the system won't be useful if we don't vote. Like you said, the focus isn't about getting votes, it's about giving them. That being said, I know I'll personally be more inclined to comment than to vote (although I could do both), because I think it's more useful and meaningful for the poster.

On another note, I have the same problem as Amy--how do they order the posts on the main pages? The best way I've found to get posts in chronological order is by clicking "Live" at the very top of the page. The default then is "All" but you can choose to sort by comment, published, or upcoming, if you prefer.

Phew, that was long! Have a good weekend!

SOS SOS SOS

I have tried to request my pal info and even after it tells me I will be getting an email I have never received one despite having tried for a couple of days. What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: linda at May 5, 2007 1:25 PM

Thanks to you and hubby!! Could you also put a sookapalooza link/logo that we can add to our blogs? Thanks.

Posted by: gail at May 5, 2007 3:08 PM

Hi Allison,

I just came back from the Sea Sock cruise and my sockaplaooza pal match was not in my email. Can you please send my match again? I don't want my pal to worry.

My pal contacted me so all is good on that end.

Cyber hugs for all that you are doing:D
Abigail

So...I'm blogless and blogger still doesn't love me:( I've been stalking my pal on her blog (haven't commented yet, but I'm still stalking). Haven't heard from my pal, but have seen some socks that I would love to be mine!

Anyone else still having blogger problems??
