hoot and otto

Meet Otto (from Lucinda Guy's And So to Bed...)! I made it through all those knitted toy finishing touches that magically transform something like this...

into this...

I'm always amazed at how well toys turn out. After I finished the knitting for the totoro hat and dolly, I never would have thought that the addition of some eyes and tiny embroidered mouth would make such a huge difference. And I felt the same way this time too. But attaching those wings and that scarf really changed the whole thing. I'm beginning to think that getting a toy to look perfect is a much easier task than getting the fit on a sweater right.

Otto also pleased me by taking a good deal of stuffing. We all know that stuffing only comes in those crazy giant bags the size of your bedpillow. And knitted toys usually only take about a handful of stuffing. Which leaves all of us knitters trying to pawn off our extra poly fiberfill on each other! But dear old Otto really holds a lot. A few more Owls and my bag of stuffing may be small enough that I could actually stuff it somewhere!

So goodbye Otto (he'll soon be winging his way to a little friend) and goodbye stuffing!

Now I have to have one. For me. And then maybe one for the children I know.

Otto is just too cute. And think of all the stash-busting possiblities in making him different scarves for different occasions.

Oh, I'm a little bit in love with Otto. Is it strange that a grown woman wants to make a knitted owl for herself?

Posted by: Elise at May 17, 2007 10:22 AM

Otto is precious. I agree that toy finishing is, like, 9/10ths of the work. But worth it!

Off-topic: I just got my copy of Charmed Knits in the mail! It looks wonderful! My kids will be arguing over what I make first...Thanks!

I've been lurking on your site for awhile now, and your knitting of this dear little owl inspired me to get the books and knit myself (ok, maybe littler ones than myself) some of the cute toys in the books. Thanks!

He's magical.
I like to knit stuffies, but I have trouble controlling how they turn out after seaming and stitching. My daughter has taken over this practice and always creates a real character.

Oh my goodness. I love Otto. I love how he looks like his little wings are tucked behind his back, and he's so jaunty in his skinny scarf. Adorable!

It really does make such a difference. That book sounds absolutly precious, it will be my next children's knitting book.

I love the owl.... I'm just going to have to make one for myself.

Oh, he is so cute! I've had this book for quite a while and haven't knit anything yet.. must pull it out!

Cute! That's SO true about toys, too. Last year I decided to make some little stuffed bears for some friends, and the first one I made turned out really stupid looking--one really pointy arm, one fairly pointy arm, and two legs all splayed out, not to mention a misshapen head and mismatched ears. I decided to test my embroidery skills on the ugly one and give him a face before I messed up the good bears, and he instantly (despite, i must admit, a very wonky mouth) became the sweetest little guy ever. So I kept him :-D

How funny! I just posted my finished Otto on my blog the other day!! Yours looks more "stuffed" than mine and I am thinking now I should have stuffed mine more - he's a little skinny!! It's funny how different coloured scarves can make them look so different!

Love him!

Otto is really, really cute.

Posted by: yuvee at May 17, 2007 8:07 PM

It´s so cute!

Posted by: Tui at May 18, 2007 4:27 AM

Otto is wondeful -- but you'll have to tweak that pattern a bit to make someone dignified enough to bear the name of Hedwig. . .

Posted by: Elizabeth D at May 18, 2007 9:29 AM

Fabulous! :)

Otto is adorable! I missed the Totoro hat before, so I am glad you mentioned/linked to that post! Totoro is one of my favourites!

Posted by: Rebecca at May 19, 2007 8:07 AM

I love how round Otto is! I am glad he took a lot of stuffing - he just looks wonderful.

Posted by: Ruth at May 21, 2007 11:56 AM

This is just so adorable! I stopped by to also thank you for the great Apple logo from your tech guy socks pattern. I used it to make a little baby top and love it!!
