spongebob cometh

If you're anything like my boys (and you are, aren't you?), you've started to get a little worried about the status of those Halloween costumes. Never fear, Spongebob and the friendly ghost costume are well underway!

I stayed up late this evening piecing Spongebob's shirt and pants together and sewing hems and edges everywhere (uugh, is it ever a pain turning up the edge in this sparkly slippery "ghost" fabric!). Both costumes are pretty much done now though, with only details like big eyes and a tie for Spongebob left to add. I scored a great red plaid fabric on sale at my local quilt shop for his tie - I'm so excited about that find! Oh and B still wants a big oversized hood to cover his head and I've got to try to make up some kind of Krusty Krab hat to top off S's costume.

I've pretty much made up both costumes so far. The ghost is based on a fun poncho from Simple Gifts to Stitch and really was very simple to make. S's costume was a little trickier since Spongebob is so boxy, and yet I didn't want to just stick S in a giant box. I finally decided to make him an open-on-the-sides Anouk-style garment, like a soft Spongebob sandwich board. Two layers of flannel should give it enough weight and ties on the sides should help the front and the back stay lined up properly. We'll see....

Try on is scheduled for tomorrow and then I've got, what, like five days? No problem. Everyone reassured now?

We know you will finish on time, and the boys and baby L will be so darling! Can't wait to see pictures. I just love the little Spongebobs and ghosts. They're so cute! But I have nightmares after some of the teen costumes that come to the door. I could do without that!

I am almost finished with my grandson's dinosaur costume - it has really been jinxed. Not once but twice I sewed the back parts of the hood to the front parts of the hood (the hood is in 4 pieces) backwards. So the fabric (a fleece) started coming apart & I had to ask SO to drive me 25 miles to the store where I bought the fabric (when I was ay my daughter's house). It really does look cute now that it's well on its' way to being finished - with the cute spikes on the hood & on the tail. All that's left to do is to sew the inseam & the bottom of the legs & put in the elastic at the ankles. Then, I have to find some Velcro & sew it on the opening. I cannot believe how long this very simple costume is taking me. Probably a combination of a new (unfamiliar) sewing machine & not having sewn much for close to 30 years! Many years ago I made a dress for New Year's Eve out of slippery shiny fabric (looked similar to your ghost) & vowed never to use that stuff again - it was murder to sew!!! But they look cute - esp Sponge Bob (& who could NOT like SB?)

Oh, your kids are going to have the best Halloween costumes! A woman at my church used to sew my Halloween costumes and they were always so lucky! The boys and wee one are going to look adorable1

Aren't you glad that you don't have to make a Mr. Krabbs costume?

I stayed up late last night sewing Kaya's costume also! The little social butterfly has 3 Halloween parties to go to... and she's only 10 months old!

Why do we always leave these things to the last minute? I can't wait to see the boys model their costumes when they come Trick or Treating!

Good. I was getting worried about those things.

was thinking of you yesterday - the Fabric Place in Woburn has a great table with your book and a bunch of samples right on the aisle - Maya cruised right over, saying "Look Hogwarts Scarves!"... Never realized how great the yarn selection is there too - some really good stuff. (It's next door to the dim sum joint...) Know you'll pull off the Halloween costumes with style - my kids have spent the last week just hoping the quarantine will be over so they can go OUT. (happy to report, it's over now)

Alison, can you send me an email? I've sent you two messages containing a sock savior question. I'm afraid that you aren't receiving them.

Thanks.
