in the pink

A quick check on my knitting mojo project, frances, reveals that even though I'm busy quilting and even though wee one hasn't gotten the hang of regular old eastern standard time yet, I'm still knitting. Oh yeah!

The back of the sweater is done and I've got a good start on all that ribbing for the front. I'm going to have tons of extra yarn, because that Jaeger Luxury Tweed has like a mile of yarn per ball, so I'm considering lengthening the sleeves. What's your feeling on those medium short sleeves? How are you supposed to wear them? I mean, they're not short sleeves, where I feel like I could wear a long sleeve shirt underneath, but they're also not 3/4 sleeves, which are generally warm enough to wear on their own. I love the look of the original sleeves, but a wool sweater with half-sleeves, I'm not sure I "get" it. Any ideas?

My vote is to lengthen the sleeves. I don't like those odd length sleeves either, sort of in between here and there. Anyway, you can't have too much pink!

Not that I follow their rules, but the people on "What not to wear" say that sleeve length is very unflattering--so my vote is to lengthen the sleeves. I am all for long sleeves on sweaters anyway.

I think that sweater would look very cute with 3/4-length sleeves.

Definitely lengthen the sleeves. As you say, "a wool sweater with half sleeves" ... I don't get it either. Wool is for warmth & our whole arm needs that warmth when it's cold enough to wear a wool sweater.

Lovely color, it's going to be beautiful!

I personally believe that the only arms that look nice in that sleeve length are stick-thin arms - and personally, I prefer my ladies to have a little more roundness to them. But this sweater would look lovely in a 3/4 sleeve.

I agree that you should lengthen the sleeves, at least 3/4 length. That's the great thing about the Jaeger Luxury Tweed, tons of yardage. I made an Hourglass sweater with the exact color and love it, however the yarn did grow quite a bit.

Just a thought, would it be warm enough as is for general indoor wear? Then you could knit matching gauntlets for when you get cold. Or just lengthen the sleeves.

Posted by: Jayme at November 6, 2007 10:05 AM

Ooof--I guess Ames is right--I love that sleeve because I have long spider monkey arms and it 'cuts' the line of them, makes them look a little more proportional. They're also very fashion-y, if that makes sense. But I say use the yarn! Waste not want not!

Posted by: Cirilia at November 6, 2007 10:05 AM

I vote to lengthen the sleeves also. The odd sleeves are never appropriate for any season. The sweater looks gorgeous!

We're having a hard time with the time change too. We actually forgot about it! My uncle joked that S's model wasn't one that came with Day-light savings time built in. Hahahah. I'm still laughing about that one.

I like the general design of the sweater but feel that the sleeves should be lengthened; the sweater on the model looks as if it is too short or perhaps a size too small for her and for me that throws off the proportions making the sweater look unfinished. You are a fabulous knitter and I am always impressed with your design and execution so I have no doubt that whatever you decide (long or short) it will be lovely. The color you chose is beautiful.

Posted by: Lacewing at November 6, 2007 10:46 AM

i think that you should legthen the sleeves so it will be nice and warm!!

Posted by: shay at November 6, 2007 10:50 AM

the half sleeves are the style with a long sleeve shirt underneath...why not keep it for this season and then if you end up wanting to lengthen it next season (or later this season), you'll certainly have the extra yarn...

I go with Stacy London's advice. Sleeves should not hit at the boobs. Either shorter or longer - I'm a fan of the 3/4, mostly because I don't have the patience for the longgg ones! And I do wear my under sleeves sticking out, it's a look, i guess.... hope all is well with you! Am hoping to see you on Sunday - when the man returns from yet another weekend eating business trip.

Though I do love the look of the 3/4 sleeves - it's New England! Knit away and lengthen the sleeves. (Nice pattern!)

Posted by: Patty at November 6, 2007 11:11 AM

Lengthen them a bit: I think the pattern sleeves look unbalanced and anyway I would say three-quarter length sleeves, always, all the time, except on outermost garments.

Posted by: Helen at November 6, 2007 11:22 AM

If you have the yarn, lengthen the sleeves. I've never seen a garment that cuts the arm in half like that.

Posted by: Carol at November 6, 2007 11:27 AM

I would definitely lenghten the sleeves. Gorgeous sweater!

I'm for keeping the sleeve length as is or go for full length. for around the house - the design length is perfect. when dealing with wee-ones, washing hands frequently and otherwise getting them wet - I would be constantly pushing longer sleeves up to keep them from getting wet. so the design length is perfect.
if this is meant to be worn mostly away from home - then lengthen the sleeves.

Posted by: nancy at November 6, 2007 11:37 AM

I've never "gotten" it -- except as a way for manufacturers to use less material and charge the same price. And especially with wool sweaters. Do lengthen them; you can always push them up or fold them gracefully if you want.

Posted by: Luise at November 6, 2007 11:43 AM

You'll "get it" once you head into menopause! I think it's cute the way it is and could be wonderful for fall and spring.

Posted by: pj at November 6, 2007 11:58 AM

The only reason I like sleeves like that is that they perfectly cover my tattoos without being too warm.

I think 3/4 would be lovely :)

Another vote for 3/4 length sleeves--the model in the picture looks very skinny & does not have much cleavage--perhaps that's why the sleeve-hitting-at-boob-level thing works for her?

Posted by: Tammy at November 6, 2007 1:44 PM

Another vote for lengthening it - hate those elbow length sleeves.

Posted by: Donna at November 6, 2007 1:51 PM

I'm in the "lengthen the sleeves" camp because I don't really get sweaters with shorter sleeves and I live in a warm climate, where people usually love that sort of thing. Pretty sweater and I so love your photos of the wee one and the twins. Super cute, as always.

Posted by: Erika at November 6, 2007 2:07 PM

I actually like the sleeves the way they are in the photo; proportionally, they look right to me, and the sweater does not seem to be made to wear another shirt under it. It's sort of an old-fashioned "sweater girl" kind of sweater. However, shorter sleeves are impractical in our climes, so like all the other commenters have said, I'd lengthen them, but do the increased length in rib to match the bottom of the body and also to make them easier to push up when baby duties are happening.

I like shorter sleeves when I'm housebound at this time of year, I do a lot of handwashing with three kids & not having to push up the sleeves is nice

Posted by: elan at November 6, 2007 2:51 PM

I'm gonna go with the minority and say I like the sleeves as are. But you should do whatever you think you'll feel most comfortable with. Also, that was a great quilt top yesterday. I would have never thought of that color scheme, but it definitely works. Love it.

My vote is to lengthen the sleeves. I find 3/4 sleeves a pain to get comfortably under a coat. :O) Shorter sleeves in a woolen sweater makes me think of turtleneck sleeveless sweaters! I don't "get" those either. Except maybe under a suit jacket? Here in Canuckland it gets cold. I like long sleeves. :O)

Posted by: samm at November 6, 2007 4:13 PM

Long sleeves. 3/4 length aren't very useful in winter (although they do simplify doing the dishes).

Posted by: Suzanne V. (Yarnhog) at November 6, 2007 4:48 PM

I love half to 3/4 length sleeves for working at home. They don't get wet or in the way when I'm cooking.

For outside the home, in winter, definitely full length sleeves are my favourite. Having them shorter is like leaving a big hole in the top of a hat.

Posted by: Anita at November 6, 2007 4:59 PM

I personally am a big fan of 3/4 sleeves. And as chance would have it they seem to be in style this season. Good luck with your sweater :)

Posted by: Erin at November 6, 2007 9:43 PM

Since it looks like it is a cropped sweater, I think that you could go with the shorter sleeves, though my personal preference would be to have a little more length in the body and the sleeves. I think it will be very cute no matter what you decide to do. I love the color, too.
