i scream, you scream, we all scream for i-cord

Or am I remembering that rhyme wrong?

Well, school's out this week, so I'm not doing any spool knitting with my first graders today but it hasn't stopped me peeking around for more info on the subject. It's just so cool and weird, so hip and old-fashioned all at the same time. Don't think it's cool? Don't think it's hip? Just take a look at the latest issue of Knit Simple where there's a whole spread about i-cording and some lovely projects you can make with it, like this sweet bag and these fancy shoe laces.

I-cord is back, baby! There's beautiful beaded spool knitting going on, patterns for cute kids projects and ideas for grown-up embellishments all over the web. There are books on making your own corker and corking projects, and even mass market kits like this one from Klutz.

And if you're into the retro thing and want to knit it old-school, you can take a peek at the 1909 book Spool Knitting.

Or check out the Spoolknitter blog for gorgeous photos and stories about all kinds of cool and kitschy vintage knitting spools.

So spool knitting would appear to be kind of in right now in a retro sort of way. It certainly is a totally legit way of making something. But it's still a little weird, ya know?

Love the leash!

My parents put a leash on me, when I was three and my father was stationed in Germany -- we used to bop all over Europe in our little VW, and apparently I couldn't resist the lure of ever so many things. So -- a leash. Wasn't I-cord, though, which is cooler!

I will have to check out that issue; the bag made of spool knitting is such a great idea! Felted? I can't tell from here [squints].

Hi Alison,

Yours is the first blog I ever followed... and have been for a couple years now. Still enjoy it, and it's fun to watch your adventures in quilting now.

Saw a post from the CRAFT zine blog that you might like, a link to i-cord snakes. Those first graders might get a kick out of it.

Thanks for all the great posts

Fascinating! I never knew what to do with those as a kid. And I love the vintage knitting spools. So cool.

When I saw the picture of the horse-playing I remembered the "Knitting-fork" that my 6-year old uses. It's easier and faster and you (the 6-year-olds..) don't need that much patience.

Alison, you are a very very very bad influence *C8o)

I have this mad desire to sew. It's not the first time either!

you know, I've never used such a device...

I can't wait until my little one is big enough to try it so I can too! She's already pretty interested in my knitting - but I think that's because I don't let her touch it... :)

It would be very weird to use it to make a leash for your 4 yr old!

I used to spool knit when I was a little girl - I never made anything out of it except a Barbie rug. Though I do remember how much fun it was to perform these random seeming moves and see fabric snaking out of the bottom of my spool.
