I couldn't resist

My lys has this old Fisher Price dollhouse for kids to play with that I totally remember from my childhood. I didn't have one, but I'm beginning to think that I must have wanted one. It's a great sturdy toy for the kids who come into the store and after playing with it (and customers' kids) for a couple of years, I kinda decided that if I ever had a girl, I'd find one for her. Now I have my girl and so now I have my dollhouse.

After trolling ebay for a few months, I found this one, complete will all the little people and little furniture bits. And then I couldn't resist getting this additional accessory for it.

It's a grandma with a sewing machine! I really like having the kids' toys and books include my hobbies. Seeing someone knit in Goodnight Moon or Book! or Ivy and Bean makes me hopeful that my kids won't grow up thinking I'm a total freak. (Even though searching online for a vintage Fisher Price Little People sewing machine does kinda qualify.)

This is so cute. I loved these for myself and for my daughter, but I never saw the sewing machine. I want one!!!

This was my absolute FAVORITE play item when I was a kid. My sibs and I would play "Little People" for HOURS and DAYS. We had a whole neighborhood (with a zoo!) and a zillion people. I didn't know there was a sewing machine! So great! I hope it is enjoyed by all.

Posted by: ruth at July 17, 2008 11:33 AM

Oh my goodness! This was the SAME house I had growing up! It even looks like the exact same model year as mine. Does it have a little door bell by the front door? Mine did and I loved to ring it all the time, to the point of being obnoxious :-D

Posted by: Lauren S at July 17, 2008 11:44 AM

OMG - I totally remember having that house! I spent hours playing with it. I hope wee one enjoys hers as much as I enjoyed mine! Though I didn't have the sewing machine.

Posted by: Bethe at July 17, 2008 11:50 AM

I loved playing with this when I was babysitting. I suggest putting the little girl at the sewing machine.

Posted by: Angie at July 17, 2008 11:54 AM

I remember that house! I think we must have had one at one point because I remember the staircase kicking around the house for years, even after the rest had been given away! At various times (all courtesy of the second-hand shop!) we also had the castle, the schoolhouse, the barn, and my favourite - the Sesame Street Apartment block!

That stuff was classic - way better than the modern versions!

Posted by: Glenda at July 17, 2008 12:07 PM

My mother still has all of our Fisher Price toys; some of my best memories revolve around playing with the house, town, airport, hospital, school house and farm.... It must be how we survived winter with only 4 television channels and no VCR ;)
I didn't have that sewing machine though.

Posted by: cursingmama at July 17, 2008 12:15 PM

Yes, Lauren, it has a doorbell that rings. Too fun!

Brilliant idea, Angie!

I totally agree, Glenda. That's why I figured I'd go ahead and get her this one instead of some fancy new one with lights and sounds and all pinky pink. I can barely walk down the girl toy aisle these days without getting ill.

Posted by: ALISON at July 17, 2008 12:15 PM

Wow, that looks so familiar... I don't think I had one, but maybe one of my doctors' offices did.

Posted by: Kat with a K at July 17, 2008 12:16 PM

My mom has my F-P dollhouse with all of the "Little People." My daughter played with it when she was little, and now my son does. Brings back such memories whenever we go there and they get it out.

We also have the modern version at home, but it doesn't seem to have the same appeal.

Posted by: Gina B. at July 17, 2008 12:18 PM

I had this exact same house! I think we had the airplane too...I can't remember. Fisher Price always made the best toys. We had the kid sized kitchen and my parents bought us a thousand different pieces that went with it. These toys are so great for kids. They teach them to use their imagination in an age when video games and tv normally run rampant.

Posted by: Melissa at July 17, 2008 12:24 PM

I had one, too--I loved it!

Posted by: Melissa at July 17, 2008 12:29 PM

Oh I remember those! And I remember wanting one so bad because some of the neighborhood kids had one. How fun! I bet she'll love it :)

Posted by: Jenn at July 17, 2008 12:42 PM

Oh, the Little People! I remember when they were made of wood, and my younger brother would chew on their heads.

Posted by: ames at July 17, 2008 12:46 PM

I too love to have knitting related toys and books around for my two boys. My I recommend the book "Farmer Brown Shears his Sheep - A Yarn about Knitting". It is published by scholastic, so I'm not sure where you can get it, but it's really great. It tells the story of how wool becomes yarn. AND the person who knits is a male - great for my boys!

Posted by: KJ at July 17, 2008 12:54 PM

I loved my Fisher Price toys! My brother and I could play with them for HOURS! We didn't have that house, but we had the camper, airplane, farm (opening the door would make a MOO sound!), and A-Frame house. I didn't have a sewing machine...but we did have a toilet that the people could sit in and the camper had a motorcycle. I miss those toys!

Posted by: Grace at July 17, 2008 12:57 PM

I had and loved this as well. And the barn.

Posted by: knitopia at July 17, 2008 1:23 PM

I love it!! I didn't have the dolls house but I did have a baby, the pushchair, cradle, dog and a boat! I used to love playing with it! I am sure that your daughter will love it!

Posted by: Di at July 17, 2008 1:47 PM

You went Old School on us.
Niiiiiiiiiiice!

Posted by: Liz Andrsn at July 17, 2008 1:47 PM

That is too cute! I don't remember if my girls had the doll house but they had dozens of Little People & their accoutrement. I remember a ferris wheel (had to have that since it was invented here in Chicago) & lots of vehicles. Little People are great toys for imaginative play. They still make them but they are larger now.

Posted by: Donna at July 17, 2008 1:50 PM

Check out the "Sheep" books by Nancy Shaw and Margot Apple - Sheep in a Jeep, Sheep in a Shop, Sheep out to Eat...they all have a knitting sheep. In one of the books, the sheep pick out a birthday present, but they don't have enough money, so they shave themselves and trade the wool for the gift! They're great books, with fun rhymes and pictures. Both my girls love them!

Posted by: Melanie at July 17, 2008 2:24 PM

I love the Fisher Price Little People...they just don't toys as cool as these anymore. My sister and I had more sets of them than I can remember...I think my mom trolled yard sales for them for us.

I actually bought the Little People Sesame Street set a few years back on ebay as our set from our childhood was long gone.

Posted by: Melissa at July 17, 2008 2:37 PM

I love Sheep in a Shop, Melanie! All of the Apple sheep books are so cuuuuute!

Posted by: ALISON at July 17, 2008 2:47 PM

so you totally got me ebaying...i just put a bid on the tudor style playhouse and the houseboat (complete with diving board!) which i had as a kid! too fun!

Posted by: Melanie at July 17, 2008 2:50 PM

Aww, I used to have one of those.
I loved it. I loved the little doggie, he was so cute.
I guess my mom just got rid of it after awhile.

I loved it and my weeble-wobble tree house.

Ah, the good old days.

Posted by: Micky at July 17, 2008 3:01 PM

Oooh, oooh, a thousand times oooh! My girls (born in the 80's) had the same little F-P figures - the dog, the baby, the boy in orange, the girl in blue, and lots of the vehicles and furniture. We made a wooden doll house, though, to match our Victorian. The furniture is great because it's so indestructible. They didn't have the grandparents back then, so we had to get another man and lady and paint their hair white! I also discovered that I could cram some yarn up under the plastic "hair" of the little girl and give her long braids, like my daughter's. Later, I found some wooden pegs with round heads of the same caliber at a craft store - their bottoms had to be carved out a bit to fit in the F-P holes, but those you can paint to match family members or, in our case, the characters from "The Wizard of Oz" - to go with the Fisher-Price castle. Mrs. Santa Claus (me) was very happily engaged in those days in toy making - and I have carefully kept all that stuff in hopes of grandchildren!

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at July 17, 2008 3:22 PM

I remember this one - I didn't have one but remember friends having it. My children had the FP farmhouse which they played with endlessly. It was handed down to me and I handed it to someone else on Freecycle - so yes, totally sturdy!
I love the sewing machine ;-)

Posted by: Cybèle at July 17, 2008 4:06 PM

Oh, wow, I just got the shivers! That was one of my favorite toys as a kid. My mom still has it (and lots of others) in her garage. She kept them for the grandkids, who played with them, but they've now outgrown them, too. It may be time for her to pass them on to me to store for MY grandkids!

Posted by: Suzanne V. (Yarnhog) at July 17, 2008 4:17 PM

I thought I had seen this somewhere before. Take a look at www.splityyarn.com. Apparently she has one too.

Posted by: Marilyn at July 17, 2008 5:12 PM

I had the same one and my son still plays with it when we visit my parents. He also plays with the Boat and Village that I played with as a child

Posted by: Stephanie at July 17, 2008 5:29 PM

Aw, I'd totally forgotten about that toy until I saw it! Yay! Hope your little one enjoys it.

Posted by: Carolyn at July 17, 2008 5:37 PM

Um, isn't that Geek not freak?

Posted by: Anita at July 17, 2008 5:40 PM

Well, you know there will be those years where they think you are a freak no matter what. But they will grow out of that and value the creativity you brought to their lives. I love the sewer! But can we put grandma in the car (she is coming home from her job as a supreme court justice) and put a boy or hip mom at the sewing machine? ;-)

Posted by: Laurie at July 17, 2008 8:58 PM

I feel inspired to do an Amy-Singeresque "SQUEEEEEEEE!!!"

What a great toy! I got the F-P farm for my (now 23-year-old) son when he was tiny. Seeing this house makes me want to find my own... you know, to save for future grandbabies...

Posted by: Pam at July 17, 2008 9:02 PM

I had that when I was little! My mom still has mine! I also had (and mom still has) the castle! Mine play with it when they visit grandma! Great find! My LittleOne's kinder teacher had one, too!

Great toys! We, too, had the house, the barn, and the airplane (with wood people) when I was a kid. I wasn't a "doll girl" but these were fun!

I have a whole collection of knitting-related kid's books. They are fun to take to my son's school to read! Passing on the word about knitting...

Posted by: Rebecca at July 17, 2008 9:40 PM

There's knitting in Ivy and Bean????? I never noticed,

Posted by: Janine at July 17, 2008 9:41 PM

Just a mention, Janine. It's something one of the girls has in her room but is too bored or lazy to do. So they go off and do much cooler stuff like break the fossil record or take care of the babysitter. :)

Posted by: ALISON at July 17, 2008 10:58 PM

I had the house, and the city, and my sister got the airport. We LOVED these. While my daughers have had the updated little people, I don't like them as much - too realistic.

Posted by: melissa at July 17, 2008 10:58 PM

Oh, I grew up with these. The ones we had at my grandparents' house were made of wood, even. I don't like the new ones and will probably hunt down a vintage set when I have a little one... we still have some of the people mixed in with our childhood toys at my parents' house. :)

Posted by: Jena (the yarn harpy) at July 18, 2008 12:15 AM

I.Love.That.House! I had one and the barn and my brother and I played the heck out of that house. My roof was brown though ;). Thankfully my mom kept all of those toys and now we pull them out when my kids go over to her house.

Posted by: sarah at July 18, 2008 1:20 AM

Has anyone ever in all their born days seen a broken Fisher-Price toy? Me neither. In all this discussion, nobody mentioned the Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe and all her kids. It was one of the old wooden ones. And do you remember the dumptruck depot with the three different-shaped trucks that had to back up to the right shaped slot to pick up their loads?

Posted by: Libby at July 18, 2008 6:18 AM

Yeah! Thanks for the happy memories. I had this dollhouse as a little girl -- including the sewing machine! I'm not sure what happened to it; my mom probably passed it on to one of my nieces or nephews.

Posted by: Laura at July 18, 2008 8:06 AM

I too loved the Little People toys when my kids were little and prefer the "old" to the new redesigned ones. BUT the reason that Fisher Price redesigned the Little People was to prevent choking in very young children. With older kids I wouldn't worry so much, but you might want to limit Wee One's playtime with them now to times when you can be close by to supervise.

Posted by: Beth Smith at July 18, 2008 9:04 AM

Beth, I wondered why they changed the little people to be so big (ie, fat). It makes sense that in the late 80's, early 90's they were starting with the "choking hazard" warnings. I'm sorry to say though, that with two big boys who love legos and marble runs, there's a lot more dangerous stuff in the house than vintage little people. Don't worry, wee one won't have to play with the dollhouse alone! ;0)

Posted by: ALISON at July 18, 2008 9:39 AM

My sister and I had Fisherprice toys when we were little. We had the garage. We didn't have that particular one but we definately had some of the people which are in your picture. Infact we still have them as they are in the loft. We also had the Village and a Tree House. Both of which were also good.

Thank you also for inspiring me to have a go at quilting as I have seen yours and think they are lovely. I knit too and regularly read your blog.

Best wishes
Sarah

This is amazing! I don't think you are a freak - I would have done the same thing.

Posted by: Allison at July 18, 2008 3:31 PM

These were hard to come by in the UK when my daughter was little ( well, expensive too). a friend brought her a FP bus.....with WOODEN people and we were hooked. She had the house for her 3rd birthday in 1975 and we kept it for years. My son had the FP village (bought 2nd hand and including extras) which we still have now and the grandkids love it.

Posted by: Anne at July 18, 2008 5:24 PM

That is *so* cute! I want one of those now. I remember them from daycare maybe because I didn't have one. Yay, now Wee One can sew along with you. :-)

Posted by: Jaime at July 19, 2008 12:21 AM

I had one of these! No grandma at the sewing machine though! I also had the camper van with a boat for a roof and the hospital - good times!

Posted by: Amy Kennedy-Penuel at July 19, 2008 3:44 AM

Awww - what a wonderful trip down memory lane. I love sewing Grandma. I had the school house and the barn. Such great memories!

Posted by: Jennifer at July 19, 2008 6:41 AM

very cool Alison. I never had any of those either...only the well off kids had those..."Fisher Price" they "Fish for a Price" :-)
also, they just don't make toys like the used to, do they!
Enjoy.

Posted by: Orli at July 19, 2008 8:01 AM

The FP house is great. Have your boys discovered Playmobil yet? I have a 7 year old and 11 year old, and they would both play for hours with the house and city buildings. They are very detailed though . . great for the older boys but too many little pieces for your little girl.

Posted by: mary kate at July 19, 2008 5:55 PM

Awesome! My mom still has my old house like that and my sister's hospital set. My kids love them. :) I don't have grandma with a sewing machine though.

Posted by: Samantha at July 19, 2008 10:49 PM

i did the same thing for my daughter! except i had the little tykes version - and i made sure my E did as well ... although, she only plays with it now when we're watching the neighbor's 3yo. *sniff - they grow so fast! made so shockingly evident recently with her hot pink hair --- neon, really... you gotta see it (i posted a pic about 3 days ago)

Posted by: rebecca at July 20, 2008 1:29 AM

Oh, that is so cool! And, the accessory of the seamstress and sewing machine is just too perfect!

There is something so magical about vintage toys!

Warmest wishes for awesome play times,
firefly

Posted by: firefly at July 21, 2008 11:47 AM

What a fab find. I never had a FP dolls house but my girls did and loved it to bits. I don't like the new one anywhere near as much. The sewing machine is just the best thing. Almost as good as the FP campervan.

Posted by: alison at July 22, 2008 1:22 AM

I had one of these when I was a kid (in the 80s) and I bet it is still in my parents' basement. Now they make those huge "Little People" that are safe for kids. I wonder how many kids ever swallowed the old "Little People".

Posted by: Lady S at July 22, 2008 11:52 AM

Oh the little people! My sister and I had the town version and loved it to death. Now it's thirty years later and my nephew is playing with the same set.

Posted by: Chris at July 22, 2008 6:40 PM

I had this!! I had completely forgotten about it until I saw the picture and it all came rushing back. Thanks for the memory.

Posted by: Trish at July 25, 2008 10:26 AM

Oh wow; trip down memory lane - this was a favorite of me and my sister's. My grandparents still have this little house in their toy room. Many pieces of the furnature and a few of the family members are missing, but my cousin's little one still loves to play with it.

Posted by: Steph at July 28, 2008 12:18 PM

My Mom still has this exact house (and grandma and sewing machine!) that I played with growing up!
