august 5, 2008

this can only mean one thing

with two European trips under her onesie belt already,
wee one's pretty comfortable with the suitcase

Yup, it's that time again: we're off to visit Oma and Opa in Germany! We fly tomorrow and I'm freaking out trying to pack everything last minute here. (Actual quote from the boys today: "Wow, you started packing late!") The do-not-forget list includes blankies, legos, games, knitting, camera, swimsuits, addresses for postcards, and a dozen other must-have vacation items. I'm a little worried I'll forget to pack the underwear! (Note to self: add underwear to list.) I really don't want to pack a bag of polyester fiberfill, but I hope to finish up those tiger and lion animals, as well as make wee one a back-up/wash-day dolly, and I don't have a clue of when I'd get into the city or where to find fiberfill there. (You might recall that my in-laws live in the hinterland. Literally, the area is called the Hinterlands, and they ain't lying!) What's the German for fiberfill anyway??

I'll post vaca pics as always. Mensch, am I looking forward to a break! See ya all on the flip side of the globe....

"okay, I'm in, close it up and let's go!"

Oh, have fun! Wish it was a bit closer, so that we could meet up while you are "over here".

Have a safe trip!! Wish I was going. Can't wait for the vacation blog post, they are such fun!

Oh, wee one's losing the baby fat - look at those legs! And all the hair!

Posted by: ames at August 5, 2008 11:02 AM

Bon voyage.

Have a great trip!

Stopfwatte or Fuellwatte. If I recall correctly that is. You might want to try Wolle Roedel or Karstadt/Kaufhof they might have it.
Make sure it's washable, my mom stuffed one of Sam's toys with her leftovers and I asked about wash-ability and she was all "Yeah, it'll be fine" well, Edgar has lumps!

Have a great trip :)

Have a good time! Hope the flight(s) won't be too dreadful. And hope it won't be too hot!

Posted by: Kristin at August 5, 2008 12:13 PM

Hi from Germany,
Fuellwatte or Bastelwatte is what you need! That should usually be polyester.
If you are in desperate trouble to find Fuellwatte where you are, just send me an email with your German address and I mail it to you. The Deutsche Post should take max. 2 days. I have too much of this stuff and it would be a great way to say thank you for all the fun reading your blog and all the sockapalooza organizing!

Have a great trip!

Fuellwatte, yes, that's great! Maybe I will leave my big bag at home and see if I can find it near the in-laws. No Wolle Roedel or even Kaufhof near them though! Hinterland, remember. ;0)

Posted by: ALISON at August 5, 2008 1:43 PM

get some space bags! they will be your best friend! and oh yeah you can pack some fiberfill with no worries:)

Posted by: hali at August 5, 2008 1:48 PM

Definitely don't forget the underwear! I've done that before and I've never lived it down - of course I was only about 9 or 10 and my dad let me pack my own back. His fault for not double-checking my bag.

Posted by: Rebecca West at August 5, 2008 1:51 PM

Dad let you go with no underwear?! "Daaaaa-aaaaad!"

Posted by: ALISON at August 5, 2008 1:54 PM

Have a good trip and enjoy your break.
On my visit to the Hinterland in spring I was surprised to find quite a selection of Regia sockyarn in the small local supermarket.

Oh what cute pics! My DS got a barrel of monkeys from my mother recently and they are all over the place. LOL Enjoy your trip!

I enjoy all your blogging and book. I've made the tea cozy hat for my baby...too cute! I used to live in Germany and GLOBUS is another big chain in Germany that you could try. They had all sorts of interesting things there, almost like Wal-Mart. Enjoy your vacation!

Have a wonderful time away from home - maybe you'll escape the constant rain in the Boston area! Wee One is reminding me of illustrations from yesteryear - Joan Anglund, maybe? The children with little fat cheeks?

Wee One is getting tall (judging by the pics) - she's really Not So Wee One now. Enjoy your trip. Do what I do - come up with a list of what you can't buy if you forget it or what you absolutely MUST have on the trip there - prescriptions, knitting for the plane, toys for the kids for the plane, & anything else that cannot be purchased. If you forget underwear, you can buy some there. I have found that adopting this system has made me feel less frantic about packing. Most of all, have a great time (my grands just got back from a week in Mississippi with their Mamaw, Papaw, cousin Levi & many other relatives on their dad's side).

My hat's off to you. I'm barely willing to take my kids to the grocery store. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

As others already said, it's called Fuellwatte or Bastelwatte but I remember that the stuff my mom used a-g-e-s ago was called "Zauberwatte". Referring I think to the fact that you could mashine wash this kind of magic batting. Of course you can order this stuff online, even to the Hinterlands. ;-) e.g. from http://www.stoffhaus-kepper.de (Look for Basteln, Fuellmaterial - fancy homepage design ;-))
Have a nice trip!

Posted by: carola at August 5, 2008 6:37 PM

Thanks, Carola! Of course, the German Post and even the Bahn come out to the Hinterlands, so there's got to be some way to get me some fiberfill! :)

I almost fell out of my chair - forget to pack underwear?? I did exactly that on my last trip!! I had everything laid out on the bed to be packed, but DH decided to go to bed early, and moved all my carefully collected items. I finished packing the next morning, confident that I had everything. About halfway to my destination, I realized what I had done, and yep, I went out and bought underwear when I got there. My brother and sister-in-law will never let me live this one down!!

Posted by: Sue at August 5, 2008 8:42 PM

You don't need the whole bag do you? Put some in baggies and stuff them in shoes/extra spaces!

Posted by: Hayley at August 6, 2008 1:22 AM

There are a few craftshops here in Germany. You have to look for "Füllwatte". But be sure to buy the washable one. There is one you can´t wash, too.

Have a nice trip!

Wow, next time I can manage to get myself back over to Germany, they're going to be amused by my new cache of fiber words... I can see it now "You know the words 'Fuellwatte', 'Stricken', and 'Garn' but you can't remember the word for 'kitchen'?"

It looks like you all are having an awesome trip. Next time you go you might try the Universal Packing List at http://upl.codeq.info/ to help you out a bit. I have no idea how you remembered everything with the twins and wee one. Awesome job! :)
