the promised land

"that way! that way!"
We promised the boys we'd go to Legoland Germany this year and last week it was finally time. Legoland is a good four hour drive away from the in-laws, so we decided to pack up the car Thursday afternoon, drive down to Günzburg and spend the night at the brand new Legoland Village before going to the park on Friday. Legoland Village is a village full of lego-themed cottages a short walk away from the park

Vorfreude ist die beste Freude
The boys were so excited. We got a Lego Racers house. It was teeny tiny, but super cute. These Germans sure are clever. There was just enough room for six beds (including two for the boys in an itty bitty loft up the stairs) and a bathroom. And there were lego decorations inside too.

don't you want one of these over your bed at home? you could make your own with about 500 white lego pieces
The village was so cool! Each little group of houses had its own lego theme and its own themed playground.

snakes, why did it have to be snakes?
The Indiana Jones playground had a "crashed" wooden plane playground and a lego snake at the entrance. The Knights' Kingdom houses had a wooden castle playground and the Pirates had a giant wooden boat play structure. The boys played on all of them. They had so much fun in the village, they didn't complain once about having to wait until the next day to go to the actual Legoland. Seriously, if you're coming from a ways away to visit Legoland Deutschland, I really recommend the Legoland Feriendorf. It was awesome!
The next morning we walked over the little village boardwalk (yes, there's even a little beach/wading pond) to the village restaurant for our breakfast buffet. The boys studied the Legoland map while eating Unmengen von choco-cereal.

And then we went to the park... (and I'll tell you all about that tomorrow!)

what a neat looking place - wish there one in the eat or midwest US! (altho, surprisingly, my grandsons are not really into Legos - their mother was crazy for them from the time she was about 4 until 11 or 12)
We are fortunate to live only about a half hour drive from Legoland California. We manage to go a couple of times a year. Very fun! (I went to the original Legoland when I was a little kid. It wasn't nearly as interesting.)
@ Donna - there is! I hear they just opened a legoland in Chicago! There's also an unofficial Lego museum in Ohio. I'll have to take my kids to one or the other SOON.
SOOOOOO COOOOOOL!!!
Legoland is so amazing -- I still remember my visit to the one in Denmark when I was 12! Even have my Legoland "drivers license" from the little cars town where we drove around..
I have a sort of off-topic question. Do you guys speak German? I imagine the hubs does, because his parents are German...but do you and the boys also speak German?
Sorry if that's too personal! I was just curious, since your family hops the pond every summer for some quality German time.
Oooo I visited Legoland Denmark when I was 17 and I always wished I had the opportunity to return with my children. Sounds like you are having a fun time. Thanks for sharing all the pics.
OMG. That is freaking awesome. I need to go there.
oh cool you can stay in the land.
We took Gil to Windsor. Two trains and A shuttle...by the time we got there he hardly got a chance to enjoy the place.
Oh yes Suzanne. My husband is German (he came to America for the first time just before we got married). We met while I was studying in Germany. And we've tried to expose the kids to German with German books and tv shows. The boys know enough German now to play with their German cousins and order sweets from the local bakery. And wee one seems to have waited until we got here and started speaking German to start talking. She says "auf", "mehr", "danke" and "schaukel" now. :)
I still have my little Lego pirate on my keychain from a visit in 1998 to Legoland Denmark. . .such a fun, fun place.
Just the Lego STORE in one of the vertical Malls on Miracle Mile in Chicago was awesome. Must put Germany on my list (as if it weren't before!)
I wanted to know the same thing, Suzanne. Thank you for indulging us, Alison.
Alison, have you ever thought of moving to Germany? It seems like Wee One is in touch with her German heritage.
That room looks like the Lego version of Laura Ingall's parents' bedroom! haha
