Over five yards of black fabric, a couple of yards of red felt, and a couple yards of shiny gray fabric and I'm just about ready to start making the boys' Halloween costumes! (Wee one's costume is still in the planning stages for now.) I started asking the boys in August what they wanted to be this year so I had time to get past the fickle first choices and get down to the real contenders but the boys stayed pretty true to their first ideas. B wanted to be a vampire (eeek!) and S wanted to be a shark (cool!). I asked again a week later and then a week later and they seemed so sure that I started looking for sewing patterns. After showing them all the various options I found online, they chose these:
B will be a Batman style superhero. This costume was just way cooler than the standard vampire cape-and-collar thing. He's so psyched about those huge wings! And I'm relieved that he'll be more of a superhero than a villain. I found several shark patterns that were all quite different, but S liked this one the best with the little hole in the mouth for him to peek through. He thinks the teeth are so funny and is amused by the fact that I have to make him a pillow that sits on his head to keep the nose pointy on top.
The boys insisted on coming with me to Jo-Anns to pick out the fabrics. There's a lot of fabric in these two costumes! And a lot of sewing. But they are so excited about the whole thing that I remember why I wanted to make their costumes every year. They're just that much more special when they can help plan them and watch and help me put them together. Halloween ends up lasting a month at least, with planning and sewing and trying things on. Getting the candy is only the bonus at the end.

hrmm. Guess I gotta get cracking on Little Girl's costume! ...and mine.
I have nominated your blog for the I love your blog award. Please check out my blog
http://wwwbunnysblog.blogspot.com/ for details.
I made that shark costume for a friend's daughter way back in 1987 or so. I don't remember much about sewing it, but I do remember that it turned out really cute.
You'll have to read "Twilight" so that you see that not all vampires are "bad." He he. I love the shark, super cute!
DD & I have been discussing Halloween costumes with the boys (she picked out a costume for Baby M & I bought it - but it just occurred to me that I don't even know what it is - I just handed over my credit card!). B also wants to be a shark - we're in the process of picking out a pattern now & E probably wants to be a dragon or dinosaur (he is obsessed with the dinos) which HAS to be green & purple. Such fun!
I made my boys the same shark costumes back in the 80's. One boy was five, the other was ten. Those were the days. You are so good to get an early start!

Wee one should go as a box of candy.
Candygram. Landshark... ;>
You have the luckiest kids ever! I would have LOVED that shark costume as a kid, heck I love it now! Good luck with all the sewing!
Hello, Landshark! You might have to teach him about that in case parents ask...
I made that shark costume many, many years ago (son is now almost 32yrs). It did use alot of fabric but it turned out great, pillow on head and all. Good Luck, please post pictures.

sadly enough, my youngest's last year to trick or treat was last year, so i'm not making costumes this year. he was harry potter. i cheated and had him wear his black pants, and white button shirt, and one of hubbie's ties, but i made the cloak. i used fleece to keep him warm (and we found a stick for his wand, lol), and now he uses it as a bathrobe!
i've always enjoyed making the kids' costumes. my eldest daughter decided to be zorro when she was 8. i made her cape, to include lining it with red satin.
the craziest one? 4 years ago, my oldest son decided he wanted to be a barrel of toxic waste. it was a riot! (both boys are big calvin & hobbes fans)
i miss it, but i'm looking forward to grandbabies. i'll be making their costumes, for sure.
My daughter was that shark for Halloween in first grade - it was fun to make, and (in my unbiased (ahem) opinion) adorable! I put the netting in the mouth opening as the pattern directed, and my only criticism was that it was hard to get a good picture of her face. In second grade, she wore the costume again for a musical production called "Go Fish", and the music teacher decreed the costumes should have nothing over the face, so I cut the netting out. It was still just as cute, but it was much easier to see my beautiful (again, in my unbiased opinion) daughter's face.
I've made the superhero costume (without the wings.) My son wanted a "Super Suit"; not a costume, mind you, but his own "Super Suit" for all that superhero stuff he's always being called out on. The jumpsuit and belt were a breeze, the mask and boot covers were a pain. I fashioned my own cape. It was great fun to see him slip into his uniform and save the day. I hope your jumpsuit fabric is washable; ours got a LOT of use!!
I LOVE that some of you have actually made these costumes! The shark one is an oldie. I'm thrilled that you all have good memories of it. Fingers crossed mine comes out as well. And thanks for the warning on the super suit bits, Donna. I'll save those pieces for a good day.
You'll be so glad you took the time with your kids to make idividualized costumes when you look back. Mine are 17 and 15 and we have great stories of success and failure. We had the same trick or treat route every year. My daughter now makes her own costumes to hand out candy to the (sigh) 10 kids that dare to come down our long driveway.
My mom made that shark costume for my brother when he was little (late 80s). He loved it so much, he wore it around the house well after Halloween. He used lie on the floor on his stomach with the dorsal fin up in the air, lying in wait for prey, I suppose. Best costume ever, in my opinion.
Oh my god I made that same costume for my son when he was about 10, he is now 33 he loved it. He got really upset with people because when he was standing infront of them they thought he was a topedo, he would have to turn sideways and then they got it.
I don't sew - no costumes made in my house ever. My mom made one crazy costume for my brother way back when and I'm sure that she regretted committing to it for a long time. It was a full ET costume with all of the wrinkles etc. It was very cool but incredibly time consuming for her to make.
My mom made Halloween costumes for me and my sister every year. No idea was too wacky or difficult for her. I adore the shark costume. I wish I could wear it!
Those are going to be adorable. I can't wait to see the completed projects. The boys (and girl) are lucky to have such a crafty mom. If it takes more than simple knitting or a hot glue gun, my boys won't be getting home made costumes. :)
Love your boys costume picks! I try to make my boys' costumes each year (although there have been years when the purchased costume was preferred). This year, I think they've settled on being a spider (easy for me - hand-me-down!) and Luke Skywalker. Now I just need to figure out which "version" of Luke he wants to be - original Star Wars Luke? Luke dressed as a Storm Trooper? Jedi Luke? so many choices...
Love the super-vampire and the shark - those teeth just make it! Oddly, my kids were also true to the first ideas they had back in August. We've got a Superman, a Cookie Monster and a Pokemon called Infernape (sort of a flaming monkey). But I gotta show my son that shark...maybe we can have a shark, too.
I love the shark -- my mom made the same costume for my brother when he was around the same age as your boys, and it's a great one!
My brilliant sister Kathy took a store-bought nurse costume, did a little magic, added some gold chains and a little white satin beanie and turned the whole thing into--get this-- papal robes! Imagine a tiny little 3 year old Pope Andrew showing up at your door! Andrew is now in college and I still crack up every time I look at the picture they took that night.
Ooooh, full-size Snickers! Bless you, my child...
Ha ha, Libby, too funny! :D
Is it just me, or does Halloween start earlier on this blog every year :-).
