...let me present to you: twelve days worth of crafty christmas gifts all rolled into one... my new serger!
I set aside a couple of hours last night to figure out how to thread the thing and sew, er, serge a seam or two. I'd once watched a serger how-to video that made the whole threading thing seem shockingly complicated, but I had this lovely, delightful little machine threaded for the first time in mere minutes. And the test seam was like buttah!
And sooo fast. I'll be sewing up those dresses and tops for wee one in no time now. Wheeeeeee.....

I've been thinking about one of those for awhile now. I think it will be my reward to myself when I finally get my computer room/guest room/yarn storage room reorganized so I can also use it as a sewing room.
Oh so pretty seams you see me becoming green with envy :) See on what I am sewing http://sibylle.blogg.de/eintrag.php?id=388.
Congratulations and hope to see the new projects soon :)
I have always looked at sergers as these amazingly difficult to use machines. It's good to know that the complications are probably mostly in my head (and if I did more sewing, I'd probably want one).
Lucky duck! I have wanted a serger for a long time. You will enjoy it so much! Your sewing is always so neat and pretty. I can't wait to see the gorgeous sewing you do now.
How do you like your Bernina? I'm shopping for a machine and could use all the advice I can get. I used to use my Mom's 1950's Singer when I lived at home and that was a long time ago.
Oh, you'll love it! I love my serger, and a Bernina can't be beat, in my opinion.
I felt the same way about threading.
Oh!! They are so fun! I just got mine right before Christmas and it's heavenly =) Have fun serging!
It looks great! I have been considering a serger for awhile. They really do make sewing quick, easy and with professional looking results.
Sergers are awesome. I don't think I'd do as much sewing without one.
How lovely. I've always wanted a serger.
Oooh, Merry Christmas to you! I have had so many times that I've wished that mine was actually functional. Some things could be so much faster with a serger.
You will love it, and will look for things to use it on! It's fabulous for edging cut fabric before you wash the yardage (I can always tell which has been pre-washed!) It's great for edging fleece for baby blankets, tablecloths, etc. Some folks like it for decorative stitching on the outside of garments, but I'm too old fashioned to go there. You can whip up little knit dresses with ribbing for Wee One without using the sewing machine at all!
Enjoy!
Ohhhh! My mom gave me a serger for christmas probably 4 years ago and it was such a great present! I really don't use it enough. I need my own craft room!
Yay! :) Enjoy the end of zig-zagging!
I'm really curious as to the use of a serger vs. a sewing machine. I understand how the serger works, but would I need both types of machines? Currently I have a sewing machine.
Do you have a rotary cutter? That really speeds up the cutting-out process!!
Wow- very cool! I haven't sewn for years, but a friend is coming over this weekend so we can sew together. I'm looking forward to it!
Happy New Year to you and the family!
I tried threading one of those machines and I spent several hours. Later my dil told me that the owner of the machine said I should have just tied the new thread to the old!
Responses to everyone:
That is totally brilliant, Eileen! Why didn't I think of that?! :)
Caren, my sewing machine is also a Bernina. It's a low-end, beginning sewer Bernina, but it runs great and can do everything I've ever tried so far. I haven't ever used any other brands, so all I can say is that I have loved my Bernina. One thing I have heard is that Singer's aren't what they used to be these days, so you might not get one of those, even though I'm sure you're mother's old Singer was probably a gem.
Seanna Lea, this serger is a higher model from Bernina, which supposedly makes it easier to use. I do believe that many sergers are in fact insane to thread.
Kris, I am soooo ready to stop zigzaging on the sewing machine. What a difference it is using this machine!
Jennifer, the serger allows you to sew seams like in store-bought clothes, where thread goes over the edge of the seam allowance, keeping it from fraying. You can get the same effect with a sewing machine's zigzag or overcast stitches, but it's much slower than using the serger, which sews, trims off excess fabric, and overlocks the edge all in one amazingly fast zip under the presser foot! It also allows you sew smooth seams and hems on trickier fabrics like knits.
Have fun, Allison. I had a day of sewing once with my friend Johanna and we had a blast!!
And Johanna, you should come over sometime with something to serge. We'll play!
Yikes! A Bernina! I hear you can just leave a bolt of cloth near it, set it on "dress" and leave the room for an hour or so! Just be careful of the curtains or you're gonna find some unusual clothes when you come back...
My mum still has her Bernina Sewing machine from 30+ years ago and it still runs an absolute treat! My sister wanted it but mum loves it so much it isn't going anywhere. Enjoy your serger, mine gets used alot and has paid for itself over and over! (Bernina too!) Enjoy!
So jealous! Happy serging!
That kind of Christmas gift is reserved for girls who were simply the bestest this year!!! Congrats!
