one and a quarter

Progress on hubby's socks is embarrassingly slow (although, compared to last year's record of sock knitting, this much progress is literally an infinitesimal improvement!). Instead of knitting, I've been indulging in a little light reading, a little lazy websurfing, and a little extra sleep.

One and a quarter is also, not entirely coincidentally, the approximate temperature outside. Isn't that the reason why I started knitting these socks in the first place?! Once I started though, the cold left me wanting only to cuddle up under blankets or keep the warm computer on my lap. Luckily - har, har - this mean cold spell is supposed to last well into next week, so there should still be plenty of time for hubby to enjoy his warm socks in the cold nights to come.

I actually had to (gasp!) do laundry last night so that I could wear office appropriate wool socks for the fourth time this week. I have lots of socks, but bankers frown on orange and green striped socks. ;)

At least you're at one degree! ::shivers in sub-zero Chicago::

But I'd call that at least a sock and a half!

Another freezing Chicagoan here. On days like this I really appreciate retirement! But I am getting cabin fever. Even wool socks aren't enough if they are knit from sock weight yarn. Last night (when the temp was still slightly above 0) my feet got cold just walking from the garage to the house (a distance of about 75') coming back from the health club & I was wearing DK weight socks - how I long for a house with an attached garage - forget the charm of a 100 year old house with stained glass windows! And there's the knee deep snow - it'd be gorgeous for picture taking if it weren't so cold! I too have been doing little other than snuggling under the (wool) blankets & reading!

I was thinking of going running at oh-dark-hundred and then I looked at the thermostat. I just couldn't convince myself to leave the house when it was a balmy 12 degrees outside. *brr*

Your efforts reminded me to rootle around in the stash for Just for Sox. I used it to make sturdy cabled handbags for my daughters and also a pair of socks for my husband. He recently developed affection for those socks and would like some more, but I think I have only heathered purple left... The finished socks measure 12" long and 12" high, so there's some knitting there. Good thing it's fat yarn.

If you ever need to test the effectiveness of your socks, it was -50 with the wind chill yesterday over here :)

I've been working on my Opal socks for 2 years I think...or is it 1 year...

Alison,

I just have a question about how you got past the Harry Potter "licensing" for this book. Is it enough to have the disclaimer on your cover or have you gotten complaints from J.K. Rowling?
