neutrality

Okay purple people and non-purple people... what do you think of these?

These rail fence blocks are for a second quilt I'm making for other friends of the family, whose taste I'm not so sure about. Well, the thing is they don't really seem to have any particular tastes, no favorite colors, no specific style. Add to that the fact that it's a rather masculine household and I decided the best thing I could do was to go neutral. When I was choosing the fabrics, I was focused on selecting not too fancy, not too stylized, not too threatening beiges and blues. I'll be framing the blocks with a simple sashing of a very neutral but warm golden beige. I want it to be something that can lie around in the corner of a non-descript sort of room and just look like a warm quilt your son would thoughtlessly pull over himself if he got chilly. Neutral but nice.

Alison, those fabrics are BEAUTIFUL! I love all of them. Are they repros? Some of them look like Civil War era. I love me the Civil War repros! Can't wait to see how the quilt progresses.

I like it. Though I'm not a styless woman, the apartment I'm currently living in is sadly lacking. Everything is mismatched from years in college and early married life. A quilt like that would fit in perfectly and wouldn't prevent me from eventually redecorating. But at the same time its not boring, and the bits of color and darker print really liven it up and make it so that it won't show dirt as much as a solid beige would.

I think those fabrics are a perfect choice.

I think those fabrics are beautiful. I want one too. :) :)

Posted by: Karen at January 16, 2009 12:58 PM

I think those fabrics will make for a beautiful quilt!

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Those blocks look like something homey and inviting that would belong in someone's living room. I look forward to seeing the finished quilt.

That would match my apartment perfectly--lots of neutrals and navys. I love it, obviously!

Posted by: Laura at January 16, 2009 1:26 PM

Those fabrics are great. Very gender neutral and cozy looking. I think you've got a nice balance of brights and darks, too. Good choosing, they are beautiful!

Posted by: Jenna S at January 16, 2009 1:40 PM

They are beautiful. I think they are perfectly neutral.

Posted by: Jane at January 16, 2009 1:59 PM

I love how scrappy it looks too. Can't wait so see how you set the blocks!

Posted by: Stacy at January 16, 2009 2:07 PM

I like them. I like them a lot and I'm not really a neutrals kind of person.

Posted by: Collette at January 16, 2009 2:21 PM

I love the colors you picked I think it will be beautiful when it is done

Posted by: lori at January 16, 2009 2:21 PM

Perfect!

I think those fabrics go together wonderfully. You have a nice variation, but they all work together also.

Beautiful combination, and I think (living in a houseful of guys) that the masculine contingent really does like blues and darker colors. Good choices!

Posted by: Anne at January 16, 2009 4:25 PM

I like them!

Posted by: Melissa at January 16, 2009 4:38 PM

Red, Alison. If you ever make me a quilt, I like all shades of red. But if I were making a quilt for a mostly male household, I don't think I could do better than what you've just concocted. Great color scheme!

LOVE. IT. :-)

My Grandmothers aprons. She never wore lacy, frilly or flower patterned aprons. I always remember colors and patterns like these. I like it, but maybe it's just the association in my mind with my Grandmother.

I LOVE that palette. But I have a real thing for blue and brown. It is beachy, organic, matches everything and just really looks great. So I adore this and am very jealous it isn't coming to my house!

These are EXCELLENT.

Posted by: Nancy J at January 16, 2009 5:15 PM

I think the combination of prints looks soothing.

Nice mixture of fabrics and colors. This will be a very nice quilt.

love the blue and brown...

I love those neutrals! Can't wait to see the finished quilt. Please post an FO, please!

Oooh, love those fabrics. I would consider (if I were smart enough to quilt) doing the binding in the reddish orange that shows up in a couple of the blocks. But goldy-beige will work nicely, too.

Posted by: Sarah R at January 16, 2009 9:28 PM

Lovely! Neutral without being boring and the blue adds just a little bit of color. Very nice.

Posted by: Becky at January 16, 2009 11:09 PM

I really like this arrangement. It's neutral, but it's not boring at all!

Posted by: Kathy at January 17, 2009 12:41 AM

I agree with the above comment of red. Sometimes when I have a very neutral look going on, a very tiny strip of red just makes it pop. You could consider putting in a little strip between your main piecing and the border, perhaps a folded "piping-like" strip? I love what you have going on so far.

Can I please have one for my house???? I love these colors together.

Looks great!

Fabulous! Your middle name is "Inspirational!"

I'm normally a pink and green person but I love those fabrics!

Posted by: Marie-france at January 17, 2009 5:31 PM

Well, I am a purple person and I love this color combination a lot, perhaps even more than the purples you shows a couple of days ago. Very nice, not too feminine at all.

I love the color combo of blue and brown! I think these squares look super fabulous.

Posted by: Melissa at January 18, 2009 1:16 PM

You captured it perfectly.

Posted by: Darci at January 18, 2009 6:26 PM

I like it.

Great color combination! I like your fabric choices, too.

Should fit the bill perfectly

Posted by: karin at January 21, 2009 6:14 AM

I love it!! They'll make a great, guy-friendly quilt.

Posted by: Jennifer at January 21, 2009 1:01 PM

I have to thank you personally - one look at your colour selections and that was it! I then knew what colour scheme I had to have for the redecoration of the spare bedroom. The cool blue goes perfectly and interestingly with the neutrals.

Thank you for inspiring my choice - the new scheme is a lot better than what I had had in mind previously!
