more butterflies for my little butterfly

What do you call a group of butterflies?

My swarm so far consists of a butterfly-bedecked back, sleeve and right front. Plus one little girl who wishes she were a butterfly.

She flies around all the time with her arms, uh, wings, out behind her (sometimes adorned with a few accessories, like the boys' crocs), saying "fwuh-fwy, fwuh-fwy!"

Well, apparently there's no concensus on the collective noun for butterflies. "rabble" and "swarm" both pop up a lot (neither are terribly pretty sounding). Did you know that the man who conducts the interviews for the "inside the actors studio" show (James Lipton) wrote a book about collective nouns? Back in the '70's I think.

I just love that she has the crocs on the wrong feet...that makes me laugh.

Yes, Darci! As she has them on that way more often than not, I can only assume that she prefers to wear them on the wrong feet. :D

She always looks like she is having so much fun! She will look adorable in the butterfly sweater.

I noticed the Crocs too - wonder if it's an age related behavior. My granddaughter puts her shoes on like that more often than not (at least she did 2-3 months ago - I'll see in a few days whether she still does). A couple of times, when we were both wearing Mary Janes, I pointed out to her how we were wearing similar shoes & how the velcro fastened on the outside of the foot. She watched politely & put hers on the right feet but the next time I saw her, she had them on the wrong way. Seems to me at least one of her big brothers did the same thing (&, because he's the oldest & always right, insisted that the rest of us had our shoes on wrong!).

There are so many pictures of me as a child running around with my hands behind me just like that (though no additional props were necessary). We still call it "putting your wings on" in the annals of my family history.

Amusingly, a few of my 8th graders were doing this exact same flying run around my classroom at the end of the day today after an afterschool practice. Seriously. The same pose.

so cute! she's adorable. I was always told it was a flutter of butterflies. I don't know if thats because its very english... Anyways I like it, and your great orange butterfly cardi.

A flutter? That is very pretty.

When my daughter, now a college librarian writing her Master's thesie, was 2 1/2 I made her a pair of tie dyed butterfly wings. She wore them as a Halloween costume and many, many times after that.

Funny how those little vinguettes just pop up all these decades later.

Adorable little girl and a beautiful sweater.

If you want any more crochet questions answered, Coats and Clarks sells a small simple little "Teach yourself crochet" pamphlet. I figured since I had learn to knit, crochet couldn't be that hard. I taught myself and made many things over the years.

I still reach for a crochet hook when I start a "made to measure" garment for a dinosaur or teddy bear. No counting, just a chain that fits the neck or tummy and try it on as you go.

She's lovely on her own, but a collective of butterflies is a flight or a flutter. Also a rabble or a swarm, but I think that would depend on the behavior of the butterflies.

Yay, Angie! I like the sound of a flight or a flutter.

Love the butterfly motif! They are my favorite... now I need to find something "adult-ish" to pull it off!
