oh so yellow

All the blocks of B's yellow brick road quilt are done! They are so fun, so cool, and oh so yellow.

click for the BIG picture of some sample blocks

There are actually only three different types of blocks: some with 3 fabrics, some with 4 fabrics, and some with 5 fabrics. They were extremely simple to put together with easy strip piecing instructions. The only real difficulty now is going to be arranging them. This is where the patterns always leave you with the inadequate instruction to "arrange in a pleasing manner". Harumpf, fat lot of help you people are! I've got 54 blocks, each with a variety of 18 different yellow prints. It's total yellow chaos here!

But I think B's going to love it. Go, yellow!

LOVE the monkeys, and the baseballs, and the numbers. Oh, and the dots... and the ?coins, too.

I'm not even that crazy about yellow (I can't wear it - makes me look soooo sallow) & I love that quilt so I'm sure B will too. It is just so cheery looking. I love the way you've arranged the blocks. I play Shockwave games & they have a new game called Quilt Blocker (or something like that). It's pretty simple as games go - you pick 2, 3 or 4 color patterns & the game gives you various shaped pieces to arrange into blocks & ultimately a quilt. It doesn't actually replicate the process because the game decides which patterns will be which shapes & that determines where they go. but still amusing for a bit. I love that apple fabric & the one with those flying saucer guns (I'm sure they have a name but I've never heard it - I wonder if they still make them - they'd make great little gifts to take with us when we go to visit the grands in a couple of weeks.)

One thing I learned from making a few of these particular pattern, don't worry if like blocks touch. Sometimes, you don't want it to happen, but sometimes it adds a whole new block size or shape that would never have occurred if none of the like pieces touch. Again, go with this "in a pleasing manner". Sort of like the instruction, "simply cut your steeks now."

This is turning out beautifully. I was overwhelmed by the layout possibilities when I made a Yellow Brick Road quilt, so I took digital pictures of each layout I tried and then turned it black and white on the computer. That allowed me to adjust until I had good balance. It worked out perfectly, and like Robby mentioned it was okay to have like fabrics touching.

I love all the fabrics that you found and how they all work together. If my boy saw it he would want one too, he's another yellow crazy boy!
