Birthday shopping in NYC was great. I got myself a whole new wardrobe practically. A sort of I-just-turned-40 thing took over and I decided I needed new everything from undies to pajamas to clothes and makeup. I also picked up some fun summer reading for the kiddos (current favorites: Captain Underpants
and the Magic Tree House Merlin Missions
) and made sure to hit my favorite crafty shops as well. I picked up a few fat quarters from Purl Patchwork and Brooklyn General (such a great store!) and made a bee line for the Spud and Chloe yumminess at Purl, finding everything I needed to make both the flap happy hat and the candy stripe jacket.

I was in Purl this past weekend too! Although I was only visiting from NJ, I always make it a point to visit when we are in the City. Got 2 balls of Alchemy Temple to make a soft chemo cap for a dear friend. I saw the Spud & Chloe!
I LOVE your blog and your patterns!!!!! Such cute things! Do you have any plans for a second Charmed Knits book?
alison i as wondering if you would please tell me where brooklyn general is located. I am making a trip to ny next week and would love to visit it.
Lori, Brooklyn General is at 128 Union Street in Brooklyn. Check out this map on their site or Google Maps for an idea of where it is. It can be a little difficult to find - just make sure you turn the correct way on Union street (toward the water and NOT towards Park Slope and the rest of Brooklyn). There's a funky little coffee shop on the corner of the correct side of the street called the Coffee Den - that's the landmark I use to find it now. It's less than a block down from the expressway and the coffee shop, so don't go too far on Union. And the big secret to finding it is that the sign over the store says "Frank's Dept Store". Honestly, that's it!
Have a great trip. Hope you love it!!
I love Spud and Chloe. Need to find a local source in L.A.
Happy 40th...
Awesome!!! Happy Birthday. I know how that feels...I've been changing my wardrobe considerbly...partly because all my cloths have gotten old...I turned 37 last month.
What a great idea! I'll have to keep that in mind for my 40th...wonder what I'll be knitting then?
My 7 year old son loves the Tree House series of books also. He hasn't gotten into Captain Underpants yet but he really likes the my weird school series too.
Spud & Chloe have been in my not -quite-subconscious since the Knitters Review article. I'm hoping a vendor at the Midwest Fiber Fir has some. Or that my LYS starts carrying it.
Hmmm...a little retail therapy...that does seem like a good way to celebrate the big 4-0. I'll keep that in mind.
A very happy birthday haul! Congrats on the 4-0!
You have lots of July birthdays in your house; congratulations on the double birth a few years back! Time does fly.
The hat is seriously cute (does it have a fleece liner?) as is the owl hat. Hmm, how to turn it into Hedwig.
Happy Birthday!
Though I live quite a bit from New York if I ever go all the LYS are on top of my Must See list!
I'm totally craving some Spud & Chloe. I love the Flap Happy Hat and I'm just crazy enough to wear it!
I am coveting your purl bag filled to the brim with Spud and Chloe!
I have twin boys, as well (eight, almost nine) and going into the 3rd grade. They also love Legos like your boys, and are currently obsessed with Captain Underpants--which I always swore I wouldn't let them to read!!! But...the selection of reading materials for boys at this age is really poor, don't you agree? Tons of great books for girls, but nothing for boys, and since Bakugan, Pokemon et. al. are not high on my list, Captain Underpants it is! (Although now they walk around talking about the "Wedgie Woman," "Booger Boy" and such, but silliness last for such a short period in boyhood...it's like a "beach read"...everyone needs a little fluff in their lives!
I love those shops! Good job :)
I so get that. That happens to me every Spring, but I hardly ever act on it...this year though I did upgrade.
