das ist aber total mein buch

that is so my book!

I'm trying to get the kids a slew of German books on this trip, so we can come home and be German readers. There's a Charlie & Lola book for wee one and a couple of cool non-fiction books for the boys, like this one that explains how all kinds of things (like bubble gum) are made.

How does the sole get on the sneaker?

For fun, the boys and I are reading some vampire books.

The Little Vampire and Twilight

The boys are big fans of Joann Sfar. They love the Sardine in Outer Space series and had just started reading the Little Vampire series this summer. I was psyched to find the first of the vampire books in German (with the cool name Desmodus). And I picked up the first of the Twilight series for me. The series is known here as the "Bite" series and the titles are all something like Until Dawn or Until Sunset, but the word for "bite" is the same as the word for "until", just with one more "s". Clever Germans.

Wee one got the best book of all though, which she will now share with you....

Anton and the Girls

Here comes Anton.

Anton is cool.

Anton has a giant car. But the girls don't look.

Anton can jump high. Anton is strong.

But the girls still don't look.

Anton tries a couple more things, then when they don't work out, he starts to cry.

Now the girls look. Anton gets a cookie.

Anton can play with them. Anton is happy.

Here comes Lukas.

Just look at Anton's face!! Perfect. Says everything about boys and girls. All in a child's book. And all in German.

Have you been to the bookstore in Harvard Sq that sells all sorts of different language books?

My favourite children's book is Die Kleine Hexe. That's about where the standard of my German is at these days...

That is a great kid's book. It's hard to find good books for little kids - not as many as when my girls were little back in the 70's. I have noticed recently that they are reissuing some of the books that my girls loved so much. Last time we were at Borders, they asked if I wanted to buy a children's book to donate to some literacy program. When I saw the Sesame Street book "The Monster at the End of the Book" I couldn't resist - my girls loved that as preschoolers. I tried to find 2 of their special favorites, Little Fox Goes to the End of the World & Where's My Hippopotamus for the grands but both are now out of print.

I like Bruno Der Eisbar by Daniel Becker. Absolutely charming illustrations and a cute story! (course, I'm a sucker for bears and ice cream!)

Cool, Sarah and Lisa, thanks for the German book suggestions!!

Deutsch its toll. Ich wünsche ich mehr errineren könte.

Uh, yeah. Sorry to slaughter such a beautiful language. It's been 20 years since I had high school German.

Thanks for sharing the German language books! We love Charlie and Lola in our house, and I want my little guy to learn some German for a trip to Germany next year when we visit my old host family, so thanks!

Hi,

have a look for the Kasimir books in the picture book section, too. A bit more advanced than Anton, but the kids I have given them to, all loved them. And Konrad in der Konservendose might be fun for the boys. Any Christine Nöstlinger book from Franz, too.

That's a great book.

I know that books like these can be picked up at Schlessingers, but they are probably cheaper to get in Germany. I don't want to think about how much some of my Japanese children's books cost.

I saw the Anton book in a small, eclectic store in Freiburg when I was visiting relatives in January. I was so totally tempted to buy it even though I don't have children...it's adorable and I'm glad you picked up a copy!

I like the little fingers and ladies holding down the pages, too!

Posted by: Dava at August 25, 2009 8:37 AM

That is so cute! And that's about the level I could read in German;)

The other "Anton" books are great, too.

Also nice is the "Bobo Siebenschlaefer" series. As an adult you think the language is a little simple, but it is a great hit with my son.

I love Charlie & Lola (and I don't have kida), they are so cute. The German books look like fun!

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

I picked up a Bobo Siebenschlaefer book, Annika - so cute! And I've put some of the other Anton books in my Amazon wunschliste for Oma to send us sometime. Lara, I love the Petterson & Findus books, but there's still a lot of text there for my kids. We'll get there soon, I hope! Those and the Mamma Muh books are on my list for next year.

Oh I love it!!!! I need that book! Isn't it a true commentary on men and women, sigh.
