a blue period

Wee's request to be a blue butterfly has got me on a bit of a blue kick. When I first asked her what color butterfly she wanted to be, I waited a beat then suggested, expectantly, "pink?" She thought for another few seconds and answered, "no, blue!"

So I picked out some sparkly blue satin for the butterfly jumpsuit, some fabulous sequined sheers for the wings, and sequins and lace for trim. Having only really sewn boy costumes so far, I've never worked with fabrics and embellishments like these before. It's a whole new world for me. It'll be a little "tricksy," as wee one says, but it'll be beautiful and blue in the end.

Continuing the trend, the fabric for wee's soon-to-be-sewn jump rope dress (pattern from Oliver & S) is also blue. I've loved this fabric line from Project Runway winner, Jay McCarroll, for a long time and am so excited to have found a good project for it. The colors in the line are a little psychedelic for a whole quilt, but I think this one print in this simple dress could be classy and fun at the same time. Those funky shrooms are a riot but, overall, the dress will of course be beautiful and blue.

Oooooh - I love that fabric. I haven't done any sewing for M yet but it is a treat to knit girly things after so many years of little boy clothes!

I've never seen anything by that pattern company before. Do all their designs have paper dolls that you can cut out for the image on the envelope?

Yes, Melissa, they do! They even have a little special "spool dog" that you can cut out and glue to a spool! The patterns are excellent too, but even better with cutie patootie paper dolls. :)

That costume is going to be so fabulous! It's great the boys are still into getting personalized costumes. I remember being a kid and wishing my mom would just buy me one from WM. Kids can be crazy like that sometimes

That fabric is really neat. Of course, it makes me think of a completely different fabric that my mom used for a wall quilt (think rainbow colored cows).

Lovely little fairy! The materials shouldn't pose too difficult to sew. I have two teenage boys but did many such outfits for my niece many years ago. As for your twitter message, that worries me so having one boy in high school and one a new freshman away at college.

Heh - well, in choosing blue over pink...she is her mother's daughter!

Cute! The butterfly costume will be sweet. I love the dress pattern--have you ever tried to find some vintage patterns? My mom used to sew dresses for me in the '70's. The classic little girl dress never changed much--and you might find some bargains.
