the bluest butterfly

Wee one was so excited on Sunday when it was finally time for her to put on her now-finished butterfly costume. I took a bazillion or so pictures to capture her first thrill at wearing her costume (and just in case there was some sort of wing or diaper catastrophe that might ruin the outfit before Saturday).

She was a bit of a shy butterfly at first but then she really got into it.

Yeah, she knows she's that cute! And look at all that sparkling! Sparkly wings, sparkly sleeves, and sparkly tummy all on a sparkly girl. This is so the perfect costume for her. The wings were a technical nightmare though (requiring 4 hours to get them into this state, which is very pretty but very unstable). It is also clear to me that I do not know how to work with wire. I've always said it: I can knit and I can even sew a little, but I am not crafty. Miraculously, the wings survived the kiddie Halloween party. When they would fall over, wee would say they were flapping. Sweet kid.

Wee's best buddy was a tree and they looked so cute together at the party among a sea of dragons and dinosaurs and furry creatures. She was the bluest, the prettiest, the sparkliest, and the onliest butterfly. She's one of a kind.

Those might be the bluest eyes I've ever seen! You did a wonderful job with making the costume and she looks adorable.
What an adorable costume and a beautiful little girl wearing it! Her blue eyes are Sooooo blue in that colour!!! She should wear it all the time. I'll bet it gets worn a lot. :) You did a wonderful job on it. Can't wait to see the boys!
You're daughter is adorable! The costume turned out great. I can't wait to see Mario and Wario. You're costumes are always the best.
Awesome job on the costume! It looks fabulous! I have always been amazed at your sewing genius. Thanks for the inspiration.
Que bonita! What a cute butterfly!
How stinkin' cute!! That's the best costume ever. No one would have known there was an issue with the wings if you hadn't told us, lol. And her friend, The Tree, is also a cutie patootie.
She looks adorable. Her little friend in the tree outfit is also so cute. So great to see costumes that don't look like everyone elses.
That is the cutest thing ever. I've seen lots of little girls in butterfly costumes (including my own), but never in a costume that cute. Love those droopy little antenna.

Adorable! You did a GREAT job on the costume!
Great job on the costume. Wee One sure seems to love it!
A beautiful little girl in a beautiful costume! She is growing so fast and looks so much like you Alison. The picture with her friend brought back memories--one of my boys was a tree for Halloween at about the same age.
Absolutely adorable - the costume & Wee One. Wings are a problem I haven't figured out yet. Last year middle grand wanted to be a dragon which he decided could be accomplished by adding shimmery silver wings to his brother's dinosaur costume from the previous Halloween. Simple right? Wrong. I finally ended up using a double layer of the stiffest interfacing I could find with cotton quilt batting on both sides. E helped desing the shape of the wings & I sewed them. I did some top stitching following the shape of the wing outline. They came out OK but there was still that flopping sideways issue.
She's such a doll, the costume is adorable! In the second photograph she looks so much like her brothers at that age...
I love your daughter's smile. You did a great job on the costume! I just love to see what you come up with every year for your kids.
I'm no big sew-er....but am used to faking stuff! Plus experience with many a dance recital and Nutcracker performance. For Halloween, could you baste the top inner curve of the wings to the costume, after the costume's fastened? Just a few swoops of thread on each side might really stabilize the wings (and maybe one stitch bottom center). I know it sounds goofy, but in ballet, we sew dancers into their costumes for performances, so that made me think of it.... (Realizing there are diaper needs.... but if you're willing to risk having to cut and re-do, it doesn't take long to put in 4 or 5 basting stitches on the top inner edge on either side, and again maybe one on the bottom to stabilize. And I think you could do it so you just had to cut one set to take it off.)
Darn it, I forgot to say that Wee One is absolutely adorable in that costume! And blue is SO her color.
