i like pink stuff

It's true. She likes pink stuff. A lot. So much so that she constantly uses this line to justify all sorts of things like getting her pink nightgown out of the dirty clothes to wear again, having strawberry flavored milk instead of regular milk, wearing her pink sparkly mary janes in the snow, or having some children's tylenol when she's not sick. "But mommy, I like pink stuff."

Since a pink hat is unlikely to harm her in any way, I thought I'd indulge her passion for pink by making her a pink snowflake hat to match her pink winter jacket. I had planned to use pink and green (the lining in her jacket is a fabulous green), but when I did a little practice swatch, I didn't actually like them together in the hat. In the meantime, wee had pulled out several other pink yarns and was playing with them in the living room. I spied a lighter pink that I thought would look nice with the darker one I wanted to use so I instantly decided to do the hat in two pinks.

Now that I'm into the lighter pink, however, I'm not so sure about it. I really like the two pinks together, but I'm feeling like there isn't quite enough contrast between the light pink and the white to show off those beautiful snowflakes. And now I'm thinking about just doing the hat in the dark pink so those snowflakes can really pop and maybe adding a green pompom.

What do you think?

you are REALLY making me want to knit this hat!

Duplicate stitch in black over a pattern of single stitches throughout - a watermelon snowflake? and do the pompom in two greens?

But, MOM, she likes pinks... make more than one! Cute hat and I love the first picture.

I LOVE pink so much. I love the hot pink and the light pink together, but i think i'd like it better if the light pink was used as the white, not as the top of the hat. (And therefore, no white)

However, I went with "i like pink stuff". She likes it. Know your audience :) The knitting looks fantastic, so knitters won't judge you :)

These posts are making me want to try this hat as a first colorwork project!

I like both the pinks together, but I see what you mean about the contrast with the white. Could you change the top of the snowflake to a pale grey to read better?

Posted by: Maryanne at February 3, 2010 12:25 PM

I voted for just the dark pink w/a green pompon, but it occurs to me that the pompon could be green and pink together! Thinking out loud... It's going to be darling any way you do it! :)

Posted by: annri at February 3, 2010 12:27 PM

I vote for making the top half of the snowflakes green and adding a green pompom.

Posted by: Laura at February 3, 2010 12:48 PM

i personally love pink on other people and think it looks horrible on me, so go for as much pink as humanlly possible

Posted by: garret at February 3, 2010 1:00 PM

I might make the hat pale pink and white and do hot pink snowflakes. After all, those snowflake-like designs are usually called "roses" in the Norwegian patterns, right?

Posted by: Sarah at February 3, 2010 1:49 PM

I voted for the two pinks, but whatever you do will be fab!

Posted by: Jess at February 3, 2010 1:51 PM

I'm with Wee on this - love pink (altho I would not go so far as to take a nightie out of the dirty clothes).

Posted by: Donna at February 3, 2010 1:58 PM

I would do the pompom with the white and the two pinks together but just use the dark pink throughout the hat.

Alternatively, you can also do the top of the snowflake in the light pink, so the top part of the hat is the dark pink with a light pink snowflake instead of white.

I think when you get farther up on the light pink the white will stand out more. Besides, SHE likes it and that is what is important, right.

Not sure I like the idea of the green pom on the top. Maybe make that in white to pick up the white in the snowflakes.

PS: off topic.... I just took the "Invisibility Shawl" off the needles. It looks fabulous. I added a small saw-tooth border on each end with tiny glass beads at the point of each tooth. Love the pattern.

What kind of downsize modifications are you making to the pattern so that it will fit your three year old?

I have several toddler/preschooler nieces and would maybe like to make this up for them.

Thanks.

I'd use dark pink for the background all the way up and switch from white to light pink half-way through the snowflake. Then use all three colors in the pom pom.

But it really doesn't matter, 'cause it'll be cute on her no matter what combo of pink it is!

;D

Why not TWO hats, one in deep pink and the other in pale pink with no change between them? (Running to hide now.......)

Posted by: Carla at February 3, 2010 3:36 PM

I love the snowflake hats in blue and pink!

Posted by: Kathode Ray Tube at February 3, 2010 5:01 PM

What if you switched up the focus so that body of the hat is the light pink, then white, with dark pink snow flakes? Then you would still use your colors, just with different emphasis. OR I could be crazy.

I'm with Sarah and Juliana -- light pink and white hat with dark pink snowflakes. Them flakes will really POP!

I'm also, for the record, absolutely in the Wee camp. I like pink, too!

That was so sweet.

Posted by: 2010 shanghai world expo at February 3, 2010 10:17 PM

Err, actually I love it just the way it is. And nix the green pompom :)

Posted by: Sandie at February 3, 2010 10:48 PM

I agree with everyone who said make more than one! I want to see the pink and green together, too!

Posted by: Minneapolismama at February 3, 2010 11:40 PM

I used to own a bead store. I had a certain color that my employees and I called "Judy pink" because I had a customer named Judy who would buy anything that color!

Posted by: brenda at February 4, 2010 8:01 AM

I like it in pink too!

Posted by: SockPixie at February 4, 2010 9:47 AM

Leave as is, put a white pom on the top and it will look like a cute snowball on top of her hat and tie in nicely with the white snowflakes around the middle.

I should have said that yesterday with my previous comment.

Posted by: Sandee at February 4, 2010 11:45 AM

I love pink too. I think the whole hat in dark pink with light pink snowflakes would be cute.

Posted by: ellie at February 4, 2010 1:11 PM

How about the dark pink for the hat, with the bobble in light pink?

Posted by: Jan at February 4, 2010 4:15 PM

I'm in the dark pink hat/light pink snowflakes camp too... but that's a lot of work to rip back, so dark pink and white works!

Posted by: Melissa at February 4, 2010 5:32 PM

Maybe do the pom pom in both pinks and the green? (I voted "But Mommy, I love pink!")

Posted by: Rylla at February 4, 2010 6:10 PM

Could you use the dark pink for the upper half of the snowflakes? That would pop against the light pink background better than the white.

Posted by: sue at February 4, 2010 8:21 PM

I like the two pink together but I would nix the white. Try the hat bottom with dark pink background and light pink snowflake. Switch for the top.

Posted by: Naia at February 5, 2010 10:40 AM

How about dark pink with light pink snowflakes and pom-pom?

Posted by: Dava at February 6, 2010 10:00 AM

I like pink stuff too. Especially this hat.

Posted by: Melissa at February 6, 2010 11:51 AM

I'd lose the white and do the snoflake motif in the light pink on the dark pink background.
