bucket head

My bucket has ears!

Second bucket hat underway. I'm magic-looping the crown and should have it done in time for the good weather later this week. The first one was a great success in the end, although neither of the boys will wear it. So what's a mother to do? Make another one, of course. Now both of the boys will have handknitted bucket hats to tear off their heads and toss on the ground. Yay!

Oh no - the knitwear rejection has started at your house! I think this bucket looks lovely, hopefully when the boys have one each they'll look at them more favourably!!

Cute hat!! I scanned your site quickly and don't see any reference to which yarn that is....??? Love the colors in it.

Sorry for leaving out the pertinent details there! My Secret Pal sent me cotton tots yarn in white and this variegated blue/green/yellow/white for bucket hats for the boys. And I'm using Chicknits' Bottoms Up pattern, of course!

I love the yarn colours. Hoping that both boys will wear their cool hats.

The hat looks great, Alison! I like the variegated yarn. I hope your boys will change their tune.

"Now both of the boys will have handknitted bucket hats to tear off their heads and toss on the ground. Yay!"

That is such a funny and true comment!

What pretty yarn...oooo...I want to make one for my Katie in pink to toss and trample!

Your bucket is looking great! I'm glad you are liking this pattern now, I know you were serious issues with it before!

Hopefully your boys will see the benefits, but I think most babies hate hats. Just keep making them sweaters, they can't yank them off quite so easily!

Very cute hat! I understand exactly how you feel about Baby Knit Rejection - mine won't wear a new sweater I made, even though she "helped" at every possible second. *sigh* On the other hand, she likes wearing hats...

I am a brand new knitter...and I want to make a similar hat to this. It's just toooooo cute!!! I am having a hard time though. I am not quite sure about knitting in the round. I have attempted dpns, but it was a flop...and i don't know how to magic loop with circs. I just need some help. By the way, do you do lots of things on circs? It seems like it would be easier, but I'm just not sure how to get started. Any help would be great!!! Thanks

Isn't Cotton Tots awesome? I love that yarn...soft, machine washable, durable...yet only about $3-4/sk....how can you beat that.

Erika isn't keen on hats either........ but they are so fun to make!!! So she either refuses to wear them or if I get one on her head she's soon to rip it off. And talk about general knitwear rejection......... she's getting to be picky about what knit sweater/cardigan she'll wear when or if at all. :-))

Yay for Alison! Looking VERY good, and the yarn is a lovely colorway. It's going to be a perfect little topper for an adorable curly-headed boy :-)

Your hats turned out great! I am knitting on in the same variagated colours but it is Bernart's Crafter's Cotton.

What is magic-looping by the way?

Becca, don't be afraid of knitting in the round. It's really not that hard once you get the hang of it. I posted a few pics of how I join to knit in the round when using dpns. You can check out that post here. And if you're worried about not joining correctly, you might try knitting back and forth for a while, until you have a few rows hanging off your needles and then joining. Then you can check that everything is straight, the rows of stitches don't flip around the needle anywhere, and that you are knitting on the outside of the circle. This is how I have my beginning knitting students join when they're working on their first hats. See my hat pattern here.

Bdot, the magic loop is a way of knitting something with a small circumference on a singular circular needle. Can you see the extra parts of the circular cable pulled to the sides in the picture of my hat?? Those are the "magic loops". All I'm really doing is pulling out the extra cable in a little loop, so that the needle is the right size! Melinda at Purlwise has posted about the magic loop. She always writes clear explanations of techniques, so I'd definitely recommend you check out her post here. And there's another tutorial here. It's easy peasy to do and you won't need double pointed needles!

Happy circular and magic loop knitting to you both!
