tuesday is knitalong day

It's going to be a short post today. Except for posting, I've been offline for a few days catching up on some much missed sleep. I haven't even checked my email! Another day of r&r and the blue blog should be fully operational again. For now my misadventures in knitalongs.

I started my sock pal sock and although I love that color, I'm still not convinced that my sock pal will. The rib pattern at the top of the sock looks good, I think, but I suspect that the rest of the retro rib pattern will get lost in the colors. I'm putting this one in time out for a bit, until I decide how to continue.

And I have actually failed in my first attempt to frog a store-bought sweater! I started with the ribbed cashmere blend Banana Republic sweater. All the seams looked good for ripping, so I gave myself the thumbs up.

I began with the neck, but the tubular bind off wouldn't reveal its secrets so I had to cut it and pick out a row to get a piece of yarn to start the ripping.

And then it wouldn't unravel! It seems that the first and last knit stitch of the 3x3 rib are knit a row higher than the rest of the stitches in that row. Perhaps this is some way of making the ribs lay flatter? I could unravel it, if I were willing to pull the yarn by had through each of these stitches every row. I of course am not. Too bad!

So everyone how are you doing? I hope your knitting and ripping is going a lot better than mine. The comments box is wide open awaiting all your knitalong updates. I promise to take the time this week to come visit you all!

I tried taking apart a sweater once but it went too slow so I gave it up.It hasn't stopped me from looking for another one to buy and rip.maybe the koigu socks should just be knitted in st.stitch? good luck anyway ;0)

Try unraveling from the other end (neck down). Things were meant to be unraveled from the place where they ended, and this is often the neck end instead of the bottom edge.

(This has worked for me in the past when I had the same problem you're describing).

Best,
J.

Okay - what I meant to say was "unravel from the other end and see how it goes". I'm working on a lap top, in unfamiliar surroundings. That's my official excuse for not making sense in the last post...

I hope the B.R. sweater is an old one that you had and that you didn't buy it to frog it! How frustrating!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the February rip and re-do inspiration.

Posted by: claudia at February 8, 2005 9:53 AM

Yeah, as Jenanne said, from the picture, it looks like you're trying to unravel from the wrong end. Look at the Vs, you're trying to rip from the bottom of the stitches. Looks like maybe it was knit top-down. Try the other end! :)

Yes, I second the idea that you are unravelling backwards. I've run into this when I knit sweaters from the bottom up and then try to undo the bottom ribbing in order to re-knit at a smaller gauge or something like that. Unravelling backwards always requires that you pull the whole length of yarn through the last stitch of each row.

I'm making progress on my sockapalooza sock! I'm using the crusoe pattern from knitty, at a different gauge. So far my adjustment of the pattern seems to be working. Thanks so much for giving me a partner with a foot size close to mine!

Posted by: rowena at February 8, 2005 10:01 AM

I'm excited beyond belief because I finished my first sock and one of my friends had the proper sized foot and it fit. So, no more worries that all the work I put into designing it and knitting it on 1s would have to be frogged. Yeah!

You can see the first sock at http://knitting.designedlykristi.com/index.php?p=158

My ripping is coming along about as well as Alisons. I've got a Gap sweater that I bought at Goodwill to wear, but it's an odd shape. I wore it once and hated it. So, when this knitalong came up, I thought about that sweater. Well, it's about as cooperative frogging as it was wearing. I can tell that it was knit bottom up, as per the "V"s. But it just won't let go! I think it's just too frayed and felted (although it's cotton, so it should come apart!) to properly frog. Instead, I've cheated and purchased some recycled yarn that I'll be using for my project. Cashmere! More at my blog.

Lauralund is done and pictures are up! This is going to be the first and only time I complete an "along" so quickly, so I'm enjoying it. Thanks so much for the little kick in the butt. I needed it, and now I have a great cardigan to wear while it's still cold! I hope you are feeling better soon. Best.

Your sock really is pretty. The rib might not show up so you could do another pattern. If your pal wears blue jeans the sock would be great with them.
I should be finished with my sock by the end of the week.

I haven't done any ripping yet, but I have several things earmarked. I'm doing the Retro Rib pattern in Koigu for my Sockapalooza sock and I'm loving the way it's turning out, I've chosen quite a light shade, so I think the pattern will still show up. Thanks for all the inspiring knitalongs!

It would be a shame to have to throw away that cashmere- could you sew it into a soft and cozy pillow, instead?

I am on draft 2 of my Sockapalooza socks- version 1 will be for me (a little too much pooling for a gift, I think, but still pretty).

I liberated two of my frog-pond fixing projects, and it felt great! Today I still have the balls of reclaimed yarn on my desk, and they make me happy.

I finally (oops!) started my Sockapalooza pal's sock. I'm making the Uptown Boot Sock from IK using Cherry Tree Hill. I LOVE Cherry Tree Hill now, I'd never used it before.

How frustrating...and that yarn would be SOOOOO nice to work with. Aghhhh!!!!

I ripped out the fronts of Sam on Thursday. I don't know when I'll be able to start the reknitting. I'm just finishing my first Sockapalooza sock.

Thanks for the continued updates everyone! I'm really hoping to get around to some of the blogs in the next few days. I'm counting on you all to inspire me to pick up my sock pal socks again!

As for the cashmere sweater, it seems hard to imagine that I'm ripping backwards. I picked out one row, stitch by stitch, after cutting at the top of the neck. This was just like the several times that I've cut a sweater to lengthen it. Above the cut needed to be picked out, because knitting doesn't unravel that way, but below would unravel. All the other stitches do unravel perfectly. It's just the first and last stitch in EVERY knit rib that seem to be wrapped around an extra loop. If it was knit in another direction that would mean that the turtleneck was knit from the edge down to the body and then sewn on there. Hmmmm.... I'll look at it again.

It is an old sweater that I never wear (way too big for me now!) and I definitely want to reuse it in some way. If it's not going to unravel, I may just treat it as fabric and cut it to fit me better or to make something else. We'll see!

My new blog has been broken in by a wave of destruction! Come over and see if you dare!

In the spirit of being super useful, one item is becoming a Christmas gift. I feel like I'm getting the better of my packrat tendencies of hanging on to the useless. Thanks for prompting me to be ruthless to my creations.

I have tried that before with similar results. It's just not very easy to rip. Not nearly as easy as something I've knit myself. Good try though! That would have been some awesome yarn. This morning I started ripping my Noro sweater with the striped sleeves. yay!

Thanks for hosting The Fix Is In. So far I have my sweater separated at the waist. I am going to add 2 inches to its length and then graft it back together. If I have time I will fix another sweater that needs to be fixed from the armholes up.

love how you're sock is starting off, it'll be interesting to see how it knits up in pattern.
Thanks for inspiring me to re-visit some of my projects! Right now I'm focusing mainly on Koigu socks. But I've also frogged, and cast-on Rosedale II - it's really the 4th go around for me, hope I get it right this time!

The Fis Is In: I'm still finishing up a project that was supposed to be done 31 Jan, but I did take time to dig out a pitifully misshapen sweater and post a pic of it on my blog. Even if I don't get it re-knit by the end of the month, I plan to get it unraveled and pick out a new pattern for the yarn.

Posted by: Dani at February 8, 2005 8:49 PM

Well almost forgot my fix-along February project. Finishing. That's all that's required. Facing, then zipper (to be sized prior to sewing) then seam pockets. All that's stopping me? Why my socks, of course! Glad to hear some of you have had same false starts I've been having. Got yarn (finally!). Now gauge is not cooperating (what's new!). Up two sizes on dps (I knit WAY too tightly which is fine for myself since I like my socks snug. But this is for a person with different size feet). Going slowly.

Okay, Jenanne, I've looked at everything again and I'm convinced that you must be right! I can't wait to give the ripping a try from the other direction!!!

Well, for once I've started and finished a KAL within the specified time!

My shockingly-orange boucle cardigan is now a shockingly-orange cozy pullover.

Pictures and details here: (cut 'n' paste as necessary) http://www.pickards.demon.co.uk/MyProjects/cable%20cardigan.htm

I have to say: thank you Alison for making me do this!

I finished my sockpal socks last night! I'll post a picture tomorrow!

sockapalooza update here...toe up and two at a time..just a pair of wooly toes so far

Posted by: fern at February 9, 2005 6:37 PM

(from a faithfull reader who doesnt post much:>)
I had the same problem unravelling. Seems like the first stitches of the rows are knit in with the next row up. What worked for me was unraveling 2 rows without trying to pull out the first row first...dunno if that makes sense. Anyhow i pulled out one row, then pulled the next row down..went the second row unravelled, it undid the first row...this is clear as mud prolly. But it does work :P
