cashual friday

Two hourglass sleeves done! Oh, how I love the subtle shaping on these sleeves.

I started the body, but am concerned about how it's coming out. Others had said that their hourglass sweaters were running a little large, and there's a big gap between the two smallest sizes, so I decided to cast on a number of stitches between the two sizes. Well, what I've got fits me like a glove, but I'm thinking that the whole hourglass shaping needs more ease to really look lovely. What do you think?

it looks like it fits you great, but i agree with you -- i think that sweater should have more ease in order to balance properly with the sleeves.

yes, more ease would be "better"...

Well, my hourglass is relatively close-fitting, and I really really like it. It depends how you want it to fit, but the sleeves look fine with a close-fitting body. I'll be posting finished images to the hourglass blog and my own blog in a few days if you'd like to check it out.

having a hard time getting past your lovely cashmere sleeves. ;) i would increase the size just a bit as well.

I don't know, I always give myself too much ease. Will it relax with blocking?

Posted by: Colleen at March 11, 2005 9:53 AM

I think a little more ease would probably good as well, but like Colleen said would blocking be enough? I don't know that you need a LOT more, just a bit so it's not actually so tight.

I found mine relaxed quite a lot with washing, but that could depend on the yarn used. I would be inclined to give it a little more ease. At least you're not too far along, so there's not too much to rip back, if that's what you decide.

Why don't you block what you have done and see if that gives you enough ease? It looks lovely and I agree that only a teeny bit of ease is needed. Blocking may be enough.. PS - did I tell you I finished my nothin' but a T shirt? I LOVE IT!!

I like the way your hourglass is turning out--I am going to do a solid color yarn and was afraid that it wouldn't look *nice*, but yours is very nice!! If you are worried about the ease now, I say rip it back before you get to the end and decide you hate it.

I agree with those suggesting a wee blocking before frogging. I always make things bigger and then with blocking or with wear it grows and then I get annoyed. I'd hate for you to suffer that fate. Especially with cashmere....

The sweater looks gorgeous. I think that perhaps a bit more ease would work better (it's supposed to be a flowing type of sweater after all), but the idea of doing some blocking pre-frogging is a good one.

I think a little more ease might be good, at least at the bottom where it kinda bells out a little.

I've recently learned that it's best to go with your gut instinct! But yeah, I would go with what everyone else said and steam it a bit and see if it relaxes . . . if not, then rip now so that you don't have to do it later!!!

I'm a guy. Whatever I say will be the wrong thing! But it fits better than the baby surprise jacket I've just completed would :)

more ease, more ease, more ease...

Posted by: wendy at March 11, 2005 9:24 PM

i agree - probably a little more ease. you don't want it to be too tight! :)

I especially like the sleeves. Hourglass sleeves are one of the best pleasures in life. I didn't know there was a name for them until just now, to be honest.

I think a bit more ease might be nice, but it's really up to you. I'm sure you've seen the corrections, but in case you haven't there is a huge list of corrections.

I think this sweater will be fabby! I can't wait to see it.

Thanks for all your input folks. I've already ripped out the body! I'll be casting on again soon and reknitting it in the larger size. Thanks!
