"thank heaven for little girls"

The finished denim pinafore. After what seemed like hours - well, I guess it was literally hours, but somehow that seemed like too long - I finished sewing down all those teeny tiny picot edgings. Although they do soften the armholes and neckline, I'm thinking they really aren't that visible. If I were to do this pattern again, I might make them one row longer, so that they have more effect. Nevertheless, I am very pleased with how this little dress came out. My first time knitting a dress! To celebrate the girly nature of the whole thing, I added a pink flower applique (iron-on: "works on jeans"!) to the front.

Oh, why do I have so few friends with little girls?

I am a mom to 2 boys and no girls myself, so I understand your excitment about knitting a dress. ;-) The dress is really cute. I love the edging and the flower.

After lamenting that all my friends and cousins were having boys, (and knitting the same star sweater over and over again) there is now a bumper crop of baby girls in my life. Now, if I could get my act together and knit something with lace and ruffles in pink and get it out of my system!

The applique really sets it off--its just lovely. Girly but still sporty. I absolutely LOVE it. And I have a girl just the right age--and a cone of Elann denim. Sewing all that picot scares me though--seeing your picture makes it worth it. Thanks for sharing!

No, no, the picot is totally visible, and very, very cute.

Posted by: Colleen at May 20, 2005 10:23 AM

Beautiful. Just girly enough. I really want to knit this for my daughter, but it would require adjustments that I'm not up to yet. I'll just have to find a littler girl to knit it for.

It's gorgeous!

absolutely adorable!

Very beautiful! I need little girls in my life too so that I have can knit things like this! Great job..

I have been considering making that dress for Eva, and now that I see it knit up, I am convinced. And I am going to steal your applique idea; it really makes the dress!

Oh, this is just adorable! The picots are perfect, and the applique is darling. My pregnant niece is hoping for a boy (she has 2 girls). Would it be bad of me to hope for another girl so I can knit this?

I love it

That is so cute! I love the flower too. Like you, I am grooving on little-girl knits these days!

I love how this turned out. The edging is just right and the applique finishes it off perfectly. Sweet!

Nice dress, I love the flower though, it makes the dress pop. :)

Posted by: Liz at May 20, 2005 11:23 AM

The picot is perfect! love it!

Absolutely adorable! I've been oh so tempted to try to knit a dress for my 2 yo daughter. You've convinced me I should give it a try. Oh, and if you are serious about needing to know more people with little girls, well, feel free to knit these up as often as you like. I'm certain people (ie me) would snatch them in a heartbeat. :)

It's so cute! I love the flower, great touch. Boys are great, but playing dress up with them just isn't the same ;)

Posted by: Vicki at May 20, 2005 12:12 PM

It's perfect and the picot edging looks great just the way it is!

so cute! I saw the pattern in the book, but didn't really like it then... but now that I've seen yours, I just adore it!! Love the little flower ;)

Love the dress - just wondering when you say that you might make the picot one row longer on a second try, how would that be done? I'm trying to get my head around it, but wouldn't that be breaking the yarn at each picot? Aside from the confusion over that, you've done an excellent job - makes me wish my girls were young again!

here's a friend with a little girl (tee hee). please bring that to knitsmiths this week. i must touch the picot!!!! and see it close up. i want to compare it to the ms. bea's pattern that i was going to use for scout's dress.

Posted by: lisa b at May 20, 2005 12:39 PM

Amy, the picot edge is done by picking up stitches, knitting a few rows, doing a picot turning row (usually some variation on *yo, K2tog*), knitting a few more rows, and binding off. The hem is folded over at the picot row and whipstitched to the inside of the dress. So when I say I'd make the picot a row longer, I'd be making those hems larger by doing another straight row of knitting before and after the turning row. Got it? :)

Posted by: alison at May 20, 2005 12:43 PM

SUPER cute!

Maybe next time go with a picot bind-off, instead of the yo/k2tog hem thing. That way your bind off takes forever but less sewing! The latter is nice and flat, though, and hems are a good place for hiding ends. So it's a trade-off, of course.

I love the picot and the iron-on! It's so cute! :)

Posted by: jess at May 20, 2005 12:58 PM

That is just about the cutest thing, ever. Going to have to pick up that book, since everyone I know is suddenly having baby girls. Wheeee...lots of girly knitting ahead! (note: I have two boys, hence the excitement ;-)

So adorable! I've been reading your blog since starting to knit in January. Your knits are so wonderfully inspiring to newbies like me.

Posted by: Namita at May 20, 2005 2:08 PM

OMG ... it is too cute! Too bad that a grown woman wearing this in adult size would just become laughable! :(

Posted by: Agnes at May 20, 2005 2:10 PM

What an adorable little dress! I, too am the mother of boys (3 of them!) and I am always hoping that someone I know will have a girl. No luck yet. I'm still hopeful.

Posted by: Emily at May 20, 2005 2:10 PM

Love the dress. I know the feeling all my friends have boys. It's hard to knit for boys, especially as they get older.

Posted by: Rebekah at May 20, 2005 4:40 PM

my goodness, that is just adorable! i'm taking an applique class in a couple of weeks-- i can't wait. love the colour and the picot edging.

Love it, so cute! I was going to make a pinafore for my daughter this summer. The flower is a very nice touch.

Posted by: beth at May 20, 2005 6:37 PM

SO CUTE. I think the picot edge is totally visible!

Posted by: francoise at May 20, 2005 6:39 PM

Very cute. The flower just sets it off to perfection.

Posted by: Mary at May 20, 2005 7:52 PM

That is just too cute! I love the flower.

Posted by: jo at May 20, 2005 9:57 PM

I love that dress, its gorgeous. Why do they have such cute patterns for girls? I've got a son and I've only managed to knit him ONE thing because I just love knitting for girls!

Posted by: Estee at May 21, 2005 2:59 AM

I love it! It's my first time commenting, but I've been admiring for some time now and I had to de-lurk to tell you how cute this dress is. I think the picot is just right - frillier edging might look out of place with the denim.
