how to make a thing hat

Okay, it's nothing special, but you did ask. This was my first time working with Fun Fur and so I wanted this hat to be easy, easy, easy. To me that meant no shaping, no seaming, and no buying a 16 inch circular needle in a size I didn't already have. Here's what I came up with.
finished measurements:
9 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches tall
(hat should have enough stretch to fit todder to woman's head)
gauge:
um, I'm guessing 3 to 3 1/2 st./inch or so
(how are you supposed to measure in all that fur?)
materials:
1 1/2 balls Lion Brand Fun Fur in light blue
1 pair 6.5mm needles
third needle in similar size for three-needle bind off
Cast on 60 stitches. Knit flat in stockinette stitch for 7-8 inches (depending on how big you want your "hair" to be), ending with a purl row. On next row, knit 30 stitches, and fold piece in half so that the two needles are each holding half the stitches and are parallel to each other with the knit side facing you. Using a third needle, work three-needle bind off across the row (= knit one stitch from front needle and one stitch from back needle together, *knit one stitch from front needle and one stitch from back needle together, pull first stitch on right needle over second stitch*, repeat * to * until end of row). You should now be at the side opening and have one stitch on the right needle. Continue the three-needle bind-off down the side (= *insert right needle into edge of front, then edge of back, wrap needle and pull a loop through, then pull first stitch on right needle over second stitch*, repeat * to * down the entire side). Don't worry about being too exact when picking up stitches. The Fun Fur is so furry that you can fudge it quite a bit. When all stitches have been bound off, turn hat inside out. The purl side will be worn on the outside, so weave in ends on the KNIT side.

S wanted to take a picture of me wearing the hat - this is what he got

S is becoming quite the photographer!
I think you should rent out the boys as professional photographers for knit bloggers. They really know how to capture the important item in the photo! :) really, i think they do a great job!
fun fur is evil... I can never tell how many stitches I have, where they are... But this hat looks really great!
Happy Halloween! Hope the boys share their loot with you!
:) Kate
YOU ARE UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST MOM EVER!
Those boys are going to remember those costumes for the rest of their lives. And if they don't, the neighbours certainly will!
Are the sweaters going to be incorporated into their everyday wardrobes? How cute would they be, running around in their Thing 1, Thing 2 sweaters?
So cute!
I can't wait to see the full ensembles!
Oh yes, Stephanie, the sweaters will be regular sweaters that they can wear. That's one more reason that I didn't go the iron-on, fabric paint craft way with these costumes. They were definitely NOT meant to be worn just once.
Very cool! I'll have to file that awy for when/if I have kids!
Question, is Halloween celebrated on halloween (Oct. 31) in MA, or does each town celebrate it on differnet days like we do here in NH? For instance, Dover, NH, I think celebrates Halloween and the kids go trick or treating on Saturday this eyar? It's a bit odd for me, who grew up celebrating andd going trick or treating on halloween (Oct. 31) and never any other day. Maybe it's just here though . . .
Cutest. Costumes. Ever. You take the prize for sure!
Oh my gosh, that hat is just adorable, as are the sweaters, as are the happy faces under the hats. Wow. You get so many good-Mommy points for this one!!
Fun Fur hats are all very fine and well, but apparently the key step is to have made a couple of bright and beautiful boys to put them on - your two fellows are going to be so adorable in their Thing costumes!
Wonderful! I can't wait to see them in their costumes!
Thank you for the pattern--now I just need to think of a costume to go with the wig. :)
These costumes just get better and better!
The picture that S took of you is sooooo great. Out of context, its mysterious and intriguing.
You ARE the best Mom ever!! I can't wait to see the boys in their costumes.
That's the cutest and most amusing hat I've ever seen!! What a cool idea for a Halloween costume. Lucky boys!
Hi Alison -
The costumes look awesome!
I have a question for you - what guage yarn do you recommend for the leftovers vest? I did a google search to follow some other knitters variations on the pattern (which looks great), but couldn't find any suggestions. I can't tell from your pattern if it's worsted, fingering... and since I'm a new knitter I thought it would be a good idea to get advice from the expert. Thanks!

I just have to say, I think these are the coolest costumes ever!! You really put a lot of thought into them & it shows. Does your creativity know no bounds?
I think the shirts are looking especially fab.
I hereby nominate you for Mother of the Year! Wow, how awesome are the costumes!
I lurk and read your blog all the time, but tonight I'm moved to comment.
Yep, probably the best mom of all time.
Thing One and Thing Two are gonna be adorable!
Best costume award goes to you Alison!! So clever Martha Steward would be jealous!
