39 points

To stem the tide of Legos streaming into the house and reduce whining on our trips to the Lego store, we set up a point system for the boys to earn points toward Lego sets. Good behavior, playing calmly, sharing, eating new things and wiping your own butt earn you points. Each point is worth a dollar at the store (this made it easy for the boys to look up prices and see how much they could buy). B got it into his head that he wanted a huge submarine set that cost $39. He's been earning points for about month and a half now, saving them up even while his brother cashed in all of his points for a smaller, but extremely cool racer along the way. Finally, yesterday, he made it to 39!

39, count 'em, 39 points!

He was so proud. I went to the gym in the morning before we went to the store and he told me to do my exercises quickly and instructed me to tell everyone at the exercise place that he was getting the big submarine set.

over 600 pieces of fun

He was building for hours! Which conveniently allowed me to talk hubby into watching the kids for the afternoon while I went to Porter Square Books to see the Yarn Harlot (tee hee) and knit with scores of other Harlot fans under a disco ball.

I did not expect a disco ball in a Masonic Temple
clearly these places are not what I thought

Let me take this opportunity to apologize to Stephanie for all the sockapaloooza sock pictures she's had to pose for. Including this one that I took yesterday. Heh, heh.

What a great system---it teaches the boys the value of the expensive Legos (I have a LEGO king at our house)and makes less work for mom (plus keeps them busy for hours). You're one smart cookie!

I'm so jealous! I hope she makes it out to California!

Wowza! A method to teach children the value of money, give them a sense of accomplishment and get you some fun knitting time on your own. I bow to your parenting prowess!! :)

Seriously, I'm in awe! Congrats!

I wish I could get my kids to save up their earned money. None of them do, they want to spend it *right away*
As for sockapaloooza pictures with Stephanie. I'm so glad I'm not the only one LOL!

I just wanted to say I love your blog and have been reading it for a while. I had to stop stalking and request a photo of the submarine when its finished, I like legos almost as much as knitting.

Posted by: Ambrosia_luv at April 21, 2006 10:36 AM

A month and a half at that age is forever. What an accomplishment for you both!

Good thinking about the lego shop, we are off to legoland, windsor, england in 3 weeks for my son's sixth birthday treat. He is very excited about it.

AND it is a brilliant economics lesson - opportunity cost and all that.

That disco ball looks so lonely.
Get lego idea by the way.

Posted by: wendy at April 21, 2006 10:47 AM

There's a disco ball in the Masonic Temple near Birmingham Alabama! How does the Cincinnati girl know? We raced in a flyball (dog racing) tournament under the disco ball! Bizarre! I had thought it was an anomaly.

My son has the submarine lego set too. It's a good investment. He has enjoyed many hours of play time with it. I love the sockpal pic with the Harlot. Cool!

Brilliant incentive system! I wish I were a kid again and could earn a living by simply wiping my own butt.

I am sooooo jealous, I love Stephanie. She is the one that got me blogging. Lucky dog, you!

Posted by: Lynn at April 21, 2006 11:45 AM

I just love this whole post about the kids. Eating new things and wiping your own butt!! Wow I'd love to earn Yarn Buying Points that way!! Hmm... might have to discuss this with my husband. heh

Posted by: Laura at April 21, 2006 11:46 AM

I love the points system! I'll have to use that with my own little feller. And I can't say I've ever knit under a disco ball. I think I'm missing out.

Posted by: Rachel H at April 21, 2006 11:46 AM

That is a good system. My question? Do YOU get points, too, for things like exercising? And what are you saving your points for?? (grin)

Posted by: --Deb at April 21, 2006 11:47 AM

I agree with Nicole that we should all be able to earn points by wiping our booty. Love the points system and am thinking about trying it with my two. There are way too many Dora movies and not enough money to buy them all.

I like the notion of getting points for butt wiping. V. ingenious!

Posted by: elisabeth at April 21, 2006 2:33 PM

WOW! I'm way impressed he showed such discipline and forethought. That is a very grown up thing to do and most of us grown ups can't even do it well. Way to go B!

Posted by: Laurie at April 21, 2006 3:11 PM

I think wiping your own butt should be a two pointer... Good system - whatta Mom!!

Posted by: Thea at April 21, 2006 4:32 PM

so...that's why Masons are so secret...they're all doing the Hustle under the disco ball.

Posted by: Dava at April 21, 2006 5:09 PM

This is genius. My daughter is queen of dolls, Barbie, Bratz, whoever. I have stepped on more tiny shoes and purses that I care to count. This point system will be discussed with the hubby asap.

Posted by: Wanett at April 21, 2006 5:12 PM

Wow, great idea for the point system!!

Posted by: Aija at April 21, 2006 5:47 PM

Congratulations to B!!!!!! He set a high goal for a little guy his age & he made it. I bet he's as proud of that as of the new Lego set. My DGS have finally decided they have enough Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. Now they've switched to dinosaurs & Lincoln Logs (which I always loved as a child but never got 'cause they were "boys' toys".) For some reason they just aren't turned on by Legos (altho their mom loved them as a little girl) - maybe when they're a little older. I so wish that Harlot was coming to the Chicago area 8-(.

Posted by: Donna at April 21, 2006 5:47 PM

I used to be such a Lego freak! In our house you could pick one big thing to ask Santa for, and then you'd get some other smaller stuff. I always asked for big Legos. Once it was the Monorail, once it was King's Castle, once a pirate ship...I'm happy that your boys like Legos too! And I'm really impressed that B was able to save up so many points. A future banker, perhaps?

Posted by: mia at April 21, 2006 6:25 PM

Yay, you got to go see TYH!! Hmm, maybe I should set up a point system for myself and yarn purchases...

Posted by: Chris at April 21, 2006 6:32 PM

Oh you lucky dog! I'm hoping Stephanie comes to Atlanta.

Posted by: Debbie at April 21, 2006 6:53 PM

Thanks for the wonderful idea! I started tonight with my two boys, earning points for Lego toys. The oldest (6) is ADHD, and so far this evening he's been excellent! He was on the website looking at different sets already! The littlest one is only 3 and doesn't quite understand the concept of it all. It's worth a try!

Posted by: Sheri at April 21, 2006 7:02 PM

We've got a point system at Chez Craftylilly too. Points are gained for pretty much what you're handing them out for. I guess these skills are univerasal for the preschool set!

Posted by: Jennifer at April 21, 2006 9:07 PM

I was I Job's Daughter (Masonic Girl's Organization). . . I could tell you but then . . . well . . . it wouldn't be pretty. =)

Posted by: Ginger at April 22, 2006 3:14 AM

What a great idea! My Number One Son will even clean his room if he knows he is allowed to buy Lego with his savings. Now he is bargaining for more money. Thanks, we will try the points system. I will let you know if it works!

Posted by: aj at April 22, 2006 7:05 AM

Yea B! He has every reason to be proud of himself ... that's a lot of discipline for a little guy.

Posted by: Ruth at April 22, 2006 8:06 AM

I think wiping your own butt should be two points. Mine's 4 and she alternates between screaming at me that she's a big girl and can do it herself and having a complete meltdown hissy conniption fit because she wants me to help her wash her hands. Cracks me up.

Posted by: liz at April 22, 2006 8:59 AM

That's so funny, Alison. My B, who is now 9, also worked for points to earn legos when he was 4 and 5...nothing motivates like Lego, I always say. He was into Bionicles then and still is. Hours and hours of building fun.

Posted by: Ann at April 22, 2006 2:12 PM

As long as the boys aren't EATING the Legos... Fun aside, it was cool spotting you at Stephanie's stop in Cambridge. And the Mason's disco ball? I won't even go there with what I know growing up as a Mason brat. Cheers!

My SIL really enjoyed her book.
Lucky you, get to go to the Gym...who stays with the boys? I've offered my young brother money to baby sit my son so that I could go to the gym but he isn't willing. Nor is my dad...Heramph!
