dye job

I'm joining Scout's DYE-O-RAMA dye-along and I'm so excited!! (Sign-ups start at 6pm today - check out Scout's blog for details!) I've already ordered some acid dyes to make a few practice skeins with real dye. I couldn't wait though, so yesterday I tried out some striping with Kool-aid and Knitpics Dye-Your-Own yarn sent to me by Kristen.

Following the suggestions of a few striping tutorials (see below), I did some math, set up chairs about 9 feet apart, and then wound a giant skein around them. I marked off where each of the four colors should go and then took the skein off the chairs ready to dye each section a different color.

The boys thought this was so cool that when I was done they insisted I set up chairs for them to do "yarning" and make "yarn houses". They had so much fun, they kept yarning and reyarning their houses (and ice cream stores and cages) for an hour until lunchtime. (As all the chairs in the house were tied together, we had to have a picnic lunch in the living room.) And while they were playing and we were eating, the yarn soaked up the Kool-Aid.

First the grape and strawberry at opposing ends. Then orange and berry blue on the other two sides.

The blue and the orange really are the best colors of the bunch. The purple didn't dye that evenly and isn't as bright. But I guess that's how this dyeing thing goes.

It sure is a fun skein of yarn though. I'm anxious to see how it stripes!

I love those bright colors. I'm going to have to go get some Kool-Aid now...

Posted by: Brynne at April 20, 2006 8:03 AM

I love that yarn! Gorgeous colors! Have been meaning to try striping (I even have a few things of Kool Aid waiting) but haven't ever done it. Maybe the next rainy day at home w/ the girls for a good mess.....

Posted by: Thea at April 20, 2006 8:06 AM

Wow, that is a fun skein of yarn. I love the combination of colors! That would make some mean knee highs if you had enough!!

Posted by: Mandy at April 20, 2006 8:06 AM

Wow, what a really pretty skein of yarn. I'm impressed! It looks like you and your helpers had loads of fun too.

Posted by: Joan at April 20, 2006 8:07 AM

Those look great! I want to try dyeing this weekend, but I want to try some Wilton's icing dye and haven't found any yet.

Posted by: Melissa at April 20, 2006 8:09 AM

No way....this is way cool....i need to have this yarn. they are my colors, not yours :)

Posted by: lisa b at April 20, 2006 8:12 AM

delurking..I read your blog every morning and so enjoy it. An audible "wow" here at my desk..the yarn came out great and the colors are so vivid. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself and your knitting expertise. Your son's are a hoot too!

Posted by: delia at April 20, 2006 8:30 AM

What great colours - so vivid. It looks like lots of fun, but I'm not sure I've got enough pots to try it at home.

Posted by: Mary at April 20, 2006 8:33 AM

Fun fun fun!! Yeah, darn grape KoolAid always makes murk, alas...

Posted by: Chris at April 20, 2006 8:38 AM

very nice!i alwayts wondered how you got two colros together like that.. your photos show it very well!

Posted by: pixie at April 20, 2006 8:42 AM

Wow, that yarn looks AWESOME! I can't wait to see it knit up.

The boys are too cute ... they sure know how to make everything fun.

Posted by: Carrie at April 20, 2006 8:46 AM

Ohh! I love it! It's so vibrant!

I've dyed a lot of yarn but never self-striping. I'm anxious to see how that knits up, too! :)

Posted by: jess at April 20, 2006 8:47 AM

So that's how the self-striping yarn is made! I've been mildly interested in the dyeing side of knitting; your post has kicked me into the next stage. Since I'll be ordering some yarn from Knitpicks anyway, might as well get the dyeable.

Posted by: Elizabeth at April 20, 2006 8:48 AM

Your yarn reminds me of a kite. I don't know why. It just does. Maybe because it is all fun happy colors. Nice job.

Posted by: trek at April 20, 2006 8:49 AM

The dye job looks fabulous, I can't wait to see how it knits up, looking forward to the pictures. I'm looking forward to getting my yarn from knitpicks now to try my hand at dyeing too...

Posted by: Schrodinger at April 20, 2006 8:54 AM

Beautiful results on the dyeing!

Posted by: Lolly at April 20, 2006 9:05 AM

The yarn looks great!!! I definitely need to get some dye-your-own and dye-my-own!!! Thanks for the links, too.

Posted by: JennyRaye at April 20, 2006 9:13 AM

Wow! It looks fantastic. Love those chairs, too :)

Posted by: allison at April 20, 2006 9:15 AM

I love this skein! And I don't normally like orange... may do this skein myself, minus the purple. Very cool!

Posted by: Frarochvia at April 20, 2006 9:18 AM

Such fun colors -- looking forward to seeing you knit this up. What will it become?

All in all, very Kool! ;-)

Posted by: Mary at April 20, 2006 9:21 AM

You're a knitting guru! What a YUMMY treat you in had in store for your viewers today! Tks!

Posted by: Leslie at April 20, 2006 9:31 AM

Holy COW, that's gorgeous!

Posted by: Rosemary at April 20, 2006 9:45 AM

You, my dear, are a total ROCKSTAR! Look at how well you did! It's absolutely beautiful.

*Runs off to make sure you get to dye for me...*

Also, you already are out of the WTF Am I Doing Group. You hear me?

Thanks for the hook up here too!

Posted by: Scout at April 20, 2006 9:48 AM

that looks like a lot of fun! i'm dying to get some time off of work and play around with kool-aid :)

Posted by: gleek at April 20, 2006 10:02 AM

That's great - the colors are so vibrant!

Posted by: Carole at April 20, 2006 10:03 AM

I think your yarn looks great! I like to use the little squeezy bottles of food colouring to dye-- I admit to being a little afraid to use "real" dyes.
You might have more luck with purple with the acid dyes, though. I've done purple a few times with kool aid and food colouring and it always "breaks" into reddy- and bluey- purples.

Posted by: valerie at April 20, 2006 10:05 AM

Thanks for all of the information. Your skein looks great! I'm armed with 20 kool aid packets and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my KnitPicks Dye Your Own.

Posted by: Courtney at April 20, 2006 10:14 AM

Oh, I love it! You're going to have such marvelous rainbox socks!

Posted by: Ruth at April 20, 2006 10:24 AM

Those colors rock, I love them

Posted by: irishmama at April 20, 2006 10:24 AM

HOw awesome did that turn out!!!
How many packets of each colour did you use??

Posted by: Kelly at April 20, 2006 10:30 AM

This is just too cool! Thanks for the infor. I'm in!

Posted by: Lynn at April 20, 2006 10:46 AM

That is gorgeous! Thanks for the collection of tutorials, I've been meaning to try self-striping for awhile and it's nice to have all the resources in one place. :)

Posted by: Amanda at April 20, 2006 11:02 AM

Oh no. Now I'm going to have to try that, because it looks GREAT! Here's another vote for how many packets of kool aid did you use? I'd love to try that with some sock yarn...

Posted by: Melanie at April 20, 2006 11:11 AM

I have been toying with dying some self-striping yarn. This may have just sealed the deal. Now to order some dye-able yarn...

Posted by: Lynn at April 20, 2006 11:24 AM

GORGEOUS yarn! That orange is so juicy looking!

Grape kool-aid makes a really difficult purple. I've had better luck blending my own kool-aid purple from red or pink and some blue - seems to make a more even color.

Posted by: Melissa at April 20, 2006 11:25 AM

Those are absolutely your colors.

Posted by: colleen at April 20, 2006 11:51 AM

What beautiful yarn!!! I've been thinking about making some self-striping yarn and now it's a MUST. Please show us what it looks like when it's knitted.

Posted by: Penny at April 20, 2006 11:55 AM

Allison...two questions: 1) could my 11 year old daughter (who knows her way around the kitchen well enough to make a meal) dye yarn on her own as long as I was in the house? I have recently had a car accident in which my pelvis was broken in 5 spots and I'm not exactly moving around quickly in the kitchen, but she wants to start dyeing our yarn. 2) could you let me know again where you got the tee-shirt sweater pattern? Sorry, couldn't easily find it and got lazy. Thank you!

Posted by: LeAnne at April 20, 2006 12:04 PM

I don't know who was having more fun--you or the boys! They are so cute! Your yarn looks gorgeous, of course, like everything else you do. But I'm curious when you combine the different colors do you have knots?

Posted by: monica at April 20, 2006 12:24 PM

Never mind my question about the knots. I just looked at your picture again and noticed that you didn't cut the yarn but separated it into sections.

Posted by: monica at April 20, 2006 12:29 PM

Oh my GOSH! I did that back in December in the name of self-striping sock yarn, with mango and strawberry-kiwi. The mango's more golden-yellow, and the strawberry kiwi's a lovely non-neon pink. But I made the mistake of doing it late at night. (!) By the time I did the laps around the chairs, I was bushed. Fast forward to now, that yarn's sitting in my stash, half balled and half skeined. I take it out once in a while and lay it out and attempt to wind some of it. Then I get frustrated and pack it up again. Next time, I'll know to wind it into a smaller hank when it's done drying, just to make the hand-winding easier on myself. But it's pretty!

Posted by: Karla at April 20, 2006 12:59 PM

yay! for home-dyed-self-striping sock yarn!

the colors look great, and I'm with the others (and you!) who are anxious to see how it looks knit up. I found that koolaid was a fun (and fruity) stepping stone into playing with acid dyes. (I do wish the knitpicks yarn was superwash'd and have a few other types of yarn that I'm going to try using in the future.)

(and Yay! for yarning and yarn houses...)

Posted by: Kristen at April 20, 2006 12:59 PM

Oh, my! That is beautiful! Makes me want to try out dying with Kool-Aid again. (My results never came out that well!)

Posted by: Marlena at April 20, 2006 1:01 PM

Hey Alison! I just wanted to give you a big shout-out for your Yo! GaPants in Big Girl Knits!!! Awesome!!

Posted by: Caryn at April 20, 2006 1:31 PM

It's popsicle yarn! :) It looks beautiful.

Posted by: Cathy at April 20, 2006 2:21 PM

thanks for bringing this to my attention and your dyed yarn is gorgeous

Posted by: aubyn at April 20, 2006 2:25 PM

So I just have to ask, do the colors without caffiene work less quickly or something? ;-) Beautiful results either way.

Posted by: Jessica at April 20, 2006 3:09 PM

Great yarn! How many kool-aide packets did you use of each flavor?

must get knitpicks order in...

Posted by: Anna at April 20, 2006 3:13 PM

wow, i wish i had room and a stove and yarn to dye

Posted by: stringthing at April 20, 2006 3:23 PM

That looks like a lot of fun, and the end result looks great!

Posted by: ShelbyD at April 20, 2006 3:28 PM

Wow! Those are such vivid, bright colors! What a fantastic experiment. :D

Posted by: moiraeknits at April 20, 2006 4:30 PM

WOW! I love the colors! So bright and vibrant! I can't wait to see how it knits up! Sounded like the boys also had a fun day yarning!
Sandee

Posted by: Sandee at April 20, 2006 4:38 PM

That's the best Kool-Aid job I've ever seen!!

Posted by: carole at April 20, 2006 4:51 PM

OMG! Alison! How cool. That's really yummy-looking yarn.

Posted by: Julia at April 20, 2006 7:27 PM

Wow your dyed yarn came out great. I'm jealous. I tried to dye with koolaid the other day and i am not happy with it. It is not even worth being posted about in my blog. I am going to overdye it this weekend. Your yarn looks so yummy! :)

Posted by: Tawana at April 20, 2006 9:19 PM

No knitting comment, but a kid comment. I loved seeing your boys playing with their yarn houses. I wish I had taken more photos of similar fun activities when my now 18 and 19 year old sons were that age. It brought back some great memories.

Posted by: Mary at April 20, 2006 9:34 PM

Awesome! I haven't tried striping yet, so you have inspired me to give it a try. Have you used Easter egg dye? That's fun, too, and right now the dyes are on clearance at most stores.

Posted by: Megan at April 20, 2006 10:07 PM

What was the approximate yardage of the skein you dyed? I have some cream-colored wool I've been meaning to dye forever, but is it worth it if I only have 150- 200 yards?

Posted by: Allie at April 20, 2006 11:11 PM

Pretty! Can't wait to see how it knits up!

Posted by: Peeve at April 21, 2006 12:01 AM

I'm sat here with my mouth hanging open, that is GORGEOUS!!!

Posted by: minka at April 21, 2006 5:02 AM

That looks so fantastic (I'm usually such a lurker round here). I now want to try with some purple, gold, and green, to get socks that match my morris dancing colours!

I feel inspired.

Thank you!

Isn't Kool-Aid the funnest?! The best part is that you don't have to worry about poisoning your self or loved ones.

Posted by: Jennifer at April 21, 2006 8:26 AM

Wow, thanks so much for all the kudos, folks! I had a fun time dyeing the yarn and am so glad that you all think it came out looking okay.

To answer the few questions, I dyed a skein of Knitpicks dye your own sock weight, which has 440 yards and used just one packet of each color Kool-Aid.

Allie, I think it would be worth it to dye even a smaller skein of yarn. When I find I have just one skein of special variegated yarn, I like to use it to make socks with contrasting solid-color cuffs, heels and toes. If you have only a very little yarn, then use it for the cuffs, heels and toes!

Posted by: alison at April 21, 2006 8:48 AM

Wow, those colors really pop together! I bet your house smelled good while you were dying. :)

Posted by: JENN at April 21, 2006 9:04 AM

THAT YARN IS TO DYE FOR! I can't wait to see what you do with it. Those colours! MmmMmm! Love your blog.

Posted by: aj at April 21, 2006 9:43 AM

That yarn looks so pretty skeined up!

Posted by: Monica at April 21, 2006 10:37 AM

I was wondering how you wind the skeins back up when you are done? Do you just set up the chairs again? I'm assuming that if the chairs are that far apart that the skeins are too big for a swift. The other thing is that if you want a dye that is easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and a "real" dye, try One Shot which you can find at www.prochemical.com. I just love using their dyes and have pics up on my blog as well. I think what you did with Koolaid is amazing, good job!

Posted by: Lavendersheep at April 21, 2006 10:59 AM

Absolutely beautiful! I am anxious to see them all knitted up!

Posted by: Heather at April 21, 2006 1:29 PM

Those colors look great together! It'll be interesting to see how they knit up.

Posted by: Jaime at April 22, 2006 12:54 AM

Looks fabu! And I'm another "awww..." for the boys making yarn houses.

Grape koolaid makes a better purple if you throw in a packet of red koolaid, too.

See you dye-o-rama-ing!

Posted by: Liz (the crazed weasel) at April 23, 2006 11:22 AM

That is soooh cool. I'll have to give it a try one day.

Posted by: Orli at April 24, 2006 7:01 AM

absolutely lovey:)
