design doubletime

Five designs-worth of yarn is sitting in boxes in the office waiting for me. I've received so much yarn recently that the mailman now has a special honk he uses to call me to the door! It's exciting, it's overwhelming, it's horrifying all at the same time.

I'd love to get some feedback from anyone about the following yarns:

Knitpicks Shine - I almost scored some of this at the last Knitsmiths yarn swap, but Johanna snatched it up!

Classic Elite Renaissance - they had a TON of this at the latest (and still on-going) semi-annual clearance sale at Wild & Wooly and I loved it! Even though I hadn't planned to buy anything, I couldn't pass up this bag.

Cascade 220 Superwash - it's even better than the original, isn't it? And the colors!

Oh man, I love yarn.

I am just now finishing up Picovoli in Knit Picks Shine and it knitted up nice, although fluff flies around a bit while knitting with it. And I haven't washed it yet so don't know how it holds up. But knitting with it is nice. Very smooth and it glides nice on the addis.

Special honk! Now that is one clever mailman. I love it!

I've used Cascade 220 Superwash and loved it! It's just as nice to work with as the original Cascade 220, and who doesn't like washability?

Posted by: Jennifer at June 21, 2006 9:26 AM

you already know how i feel about the cascade 220 superwash...

Posted by: lisa b at June 21, 2006 9:28 AM

So the Cascade Superwash is nice is it. Maybe that's the yarn I should use for the afghan I'm making. I'm not handwashing this huge afghan.

I really like the Renaissance - I used it for a shrug, and the leftovers for a few incidental projects here and there. I've always liked how soft it feels.

Posted by: gwendolina at June 21, 2006 9:44 AM

I like the Shine, especially for baby projects, because it is soft, nicer to work with than most cotton, and, in my experience, washes well. You do get fuzz all over, though. I think I still have some in my hair from last night's knitting.

I've used Shine in a couple of projects. One was Soleil, from Knitty, and the other was a chunky sleeveless turtleneck (yarn doubled). This stuff feels great next to the skin, has just a bit of sheen, and I didn't have the fuzz problem Maureen mentioned. I'm thinking some baby things might be nice...my sister is expecting in January. Wash/wear has been fine. I even tossed the tanks in the dryer on low for a few minutes...just to speed up my short attention span "aren't you dry YET?" issue.

I used Shine for a log cabin baby blanket and really liked it. I washed it before gifting it to see how it would hold up, and it seemed to do fine...just a little bit of softening and fuzz, but not much. I think it's a great choice for baby things!

KnitPicks Shine comes in yummy colors and is perfectly pleasant to knit with, as far as cotton yarns go. My main complaint about it is that it falls into No-Man's-Land gaugewise. It's smaller than DK and bigger than Sport, should be knit on size 3 or 4 needles, and I just can't find any patterns that it works with. Also, I believe that Grumperina discovered it falls apart if frogged too many times. In general, I'd advise you to stay away from KnitPicks. You are a "big girl" and their stuff isn't quite top drawer.

Posted by: Kat at June 21, 2006 10:28 AM

I used KnitPicks Shine to knit a sleeveless sweater for my son last summer. He is about to turn five, and it still looks great after he's worn it over the past year--and he plays hard! It washes well, is supersoft next to his skin, and the colors have stayed true with washing.

Posted by: Lindsey at June 21, 2006 10:36 AM

I used Shine for a baby blanket (apricot, butter, and green apple colors). I did not have the "fluff" issue that some mentioned. I washed the blanket before giving it. I also "visited" the blanket recently (baby is now 6 mos old, and has been using it since birth -- mom says it's a favorite, and asked for another one in a bigger size!), and the yarn seems to have held up fine. Other knitters have said that the colors tend to fade with many washings, but I didn't notice, as I didn't have the original to compare it to.

I did a good amount of swatching and frogging, and did not have any more wear than I would have noticed with other yarns, including more pricey brand names. I think cotton -- in gerneral, not just Shine -- is more prone to looking worn after frogging just because it has less "sproing" than wool.

I would definitely use the Shine yarn again, either for baby stuff or for light tops for adults...

I have not used any of those yarns, but I have heard good things about Shine. As for the Renaissance - I LOVE the colors! I might have to look around for some of this for myself!

Posted by: Jamie at June 21, 2006 10:48 AM

It is always hard to pass up a good deal.

Posted by: Kelly at June 21, 2006 10:59 AM

LOVE Knitpicks Shine!!! So incredibly soft!

Posted by: Adelle at June 21, 2006 11:05 AM

Wow, so great to hear all your opinions, especially about Shine! I really liked the feel of it when I saw it at the swap. And I love the Knitpicks yarns I've used so far. That Dye-Your-Own sock yarn is really one of my favorite sock yarns. I'm always tempted when I see someone selling handpainted yarns and I know they've used that yarn.

Posted by: alison at June 21, 2006 11:11 AM

I don't know anything about the yarns, but the reneissance sure has the best label!

Posted by: Helene at June 21, 2006 11:17 AM

Doesn't it though, Helene?! I will admit that that was part of the appeal. Of course, that color is amazing. But the label is just so neat!

Posted by: alison at June 21, 2006 11:18 AM

Hi Alison...
I've knit several children's sweaters with Shine and I do like it. I knit on size 4 and 5 needles and really have to pay attention to tension (my problem, not the yarn's), but the results are soft, clean, fresh. Most have been gift, but I haven't heard any negative reports about how the yarn is wearing. I only work with it for about 1-2 hours at a sitting (when I get the stretch) 'cause the hands start to feel it.

Posted by: JoShell at June 21, 2006 11:19 AM

I used the Renaissance for a pair of socks, and was actually disappointed with its softness- it's a little itchy for my tastes, but it was fantastic for the socks :)

Otherwise, I don't think I had as much problem with snagging as I have with some designer yarns (*cough* Debbie Bliss *cough* *cough*), and if I remember correctly, the stitch definition was pretty good.

Sorry I can't give a more clear cut answer than that, I knit the socks over a year ago and don't have them with me presently >_

I love that lime green in the Cascade superwash...great option for projects. Perhaps doubling it for a quick blanket...

Posted by: Darci at June 21, 2006 11:47 AM

I love the cascade220 superwash.... as for shine, i agree w/ the previous reviewers about its softness and wearability, but i made a tank out of it last summer, and after one wearing (and no washes other than the blocking) i was getting major pilling and fuzzing. which may not be a problem, but i wouldn't use it if you wanted nice crisp stitch definition or if you wanted to keep the original sheen of the yarn (maybe they should change the name... it definitely doesn't stay very shiny!) still, it's a good value, and soft, so i think it would be good for baby clothes and blankets and such, but not so good for more sophisticated knits.

Posted by: diana at June 21, 2006 12:01 PM

I would echo most of what was said about Shine, the fuzz was minimal but there. However, the one thing that wasnt mentioned was how it grew once blocked!! I don't know if anyone else had the problem, I made two garments with it, both of which grew a lot once washed/blocked.

I would however use it again.

Posted by: stephanie at June 21, 2006 12:31 PM

Guilt, guilt, guilt! I offered some up for you to swatch, the offer still stands!

Posted by: Johanna at June 21, 2006 1:13 PM

I am still knitting up all the yarn I got at the Wild & Wooly sale from LAST year--so I don't dare let myself even go up 128 while the their sale is on!

Posted by: Barb in Sudbury at June 21, 2006 3:56 PM

I love the Shine - it has worn well for me, and I really like the colors. I had a bit of fuzz while knitting it up, but haven't noticed any in wear. And mine wasn't splitty.
Good luck - can't wait to see what you're cooking up!

Posted by: Jenn at June 21, 2006 6:57 PM

I was all excited to add my two-cents about Shine--but it seems most everyone else has already told you that they like it. I made a shrug for my sister with it, right at the beginning of spring. It was great to work with (the first cotton after a winter of wools), and the drape of the fabric turned out perfectly for a casual sweater.

You should design something that is not a shrug with Shine, and then I will knit it for myself. :)

Really like the Knitpicks shine and worsted weight too. Great for baby items, machine wash/dry, hard to beat that! Also, great stitch definition. It is a lot like Cascade Pima Tencel, and with the same slight shedding.

Posted by: Juls at June 22, 2006 12:02 AM

I used the Renaissance for a poncho for my sister - and liked it so much I made one for myself. I knit one long continuous piece of fan and feather lace and joined it one end to another and finished it with a crochet edging. It feels nice when you're knitting it up, drapes nicely, and the variation in the color is lovely.

Hey, I also got a bag o Renaissance at WW! Have made a hat out of it in the past and loved it. Am planning a longish shawl collared cardigan like Starsky (maybe actually Starsky) bc it is so nice and soft and has a good drape!

I love KnitPicks Shine! It's soft and cozy, just a pleasure to knit with. FO's turn out just beautifully.

Posted by: Ronda at June 22, 2006 8:28 AM

I use Knitpicks Shine a LOT - it's great especially for kid's stuff b/c it's washable. And it washes AND dries very well! It keeps its structure a lot better than, say, Cotton Ease - Cotton Ease felt like a dishrag after it was washed and dried. Shine stays nice and soft. And the color selection is great, and you can't beat the price. Highly recommended!

I love the Knitpicks Shine--especially the new worsted weight. It is easier on the hands while knitting than other cottons with which I have worked. I made a cabled summer top with the worsted and it looks great and has held its shape while wearing. The DK shine is nice too but not as soft on the hands while knitting. The colors seem to hold up in washing. Don't hesistate to try this yarn!

Posted by: Shari at June 22, 2006 12:38 PM

I really like the Knitpicks Shine. I'm knitting a baby blanket with it right now and find it really easy to work with -- slides nicely along the needles. My only criticism - and it's not really a criticism, my computer is at least hafl responsible - is that the colour accuracy from their website seems to be pretty bad, worse than other yarn sites I've bought from. The apple green is really more Kermit-the-frog green, which is fun but not exactly what I was looking for!

Posted by: Nikki at June 22, 2006 7:09 PM

I LOVE 220 Superwash. I think it feels softer than regular 220, but I do wish the color range was the same. I haven't used the other yarn mentioned, but I am about thisclose to ordering some Shine to try out. I got a color card, and it feels pretty soft and has a nice... well... shine! :)

Posted by: Marlena at June 23, 2006 11:16 AM

I'm doing a sweater out of the Renaissance and love it! I've not had any issues with the yarn and it is a dream to knit with.
