sunday swap

Swap day at the Knitsmiths!

take a number and take some yarn

I recognized three or four things on the swap table that I had brought to previous swaps. They were sitting next to things I had picked up at previous swaps and was reswapping. Heh, heh. We swapsmiths may have been swapping with each other a little too long.

the sock yarn table

It wasn't all old stuff though: both of my first hand-dyed skeins of sock yarn were up for grabs on the sock yarn table. Johanna took the "poop on a fence" skein and Norah picked my self-striping skein.

loot!

I picked up some Steadfast Fibers Marvelous Mohair leftovers. Look at those colors! And then there were some old patterns that seemed so insistent that I felt compelled to take them.

But wait, it's a series! When you're done with that lumber coat, you need to knit a bed coat, quickly. Done that? Good. Now, knit a jerkin quickly.

Um, okay, what's a jerkin?

Hee hee - Wikipedia isn't very helpful - it defines a jerkin as a garment, a male gyrfalcon, or part of a gable on a house. Personally, I think it will be very interesting to watch you knit a gyrfalcon. Especially "quickly"! ;)

And what's a lumber coat? I hope she isn't lighting that match to help her decide whether her bedjacket is made from wool or acrylics. Nice snag with the mohair!

Love, love the blue/lavendar + yellow yarns (good pics). Wish I could have been at the yarn swap--tks for taking us on the trip.

A jerkin is a boy pickle, I think. If it's not, it should be.

Good yarn photos...very nice.

Jerkin--a short, fitted jacket worn belted over a doublet by men especially in the 16th century.
Okay, now what's a doublet?

My Mother used to wear this kind of jacket, and she called it a jerkin. I figured it was because she would "jerk" it on and off quickly, but I was just a kid. I still know nothing.

jerkin?? whatever it is, you should make it quickly. sorry i missed the swap! i was going to bring some of my hand-dyed yarns to swap, but i ended up cleaning the apartment instead.

"Poop on a Fence"... Who could resist? Sounds almost like a Lorna's Laces colorway!

Lumber coat -- not a very feminine name for a garment, I wouldn't think! I picture it as something Paul Bunyon would wear!

I thought they were vests.
I can believe you swapped your hand dyed yarn.

The mohair almost looks like cotton candy...what do you think you'll make with it?

A jerkin is a kind of coat that does indeed go over a doublet, a vestment that was a precursor to the waistcoat or vest. It had sleeves but was fitted like a vest - picture the shirts you see in a movie like Shakespeare in Love that have the puffy sleeve caps, tight sleeves, neck ruffs, and buttons. The jerkin was a tight jacket, usually in leather and sometimes brocade, that fitted over the doublet.

I'm a historic costumer and tailleur coutourier in the summer at Fort William :)

Gosh, I wish I could have been at your yarn swap... I would have taken your poop on fence yarn in a heartbeat.

I think a jerkin may look sort of like a tighter version of today's polar fleece vest. The real thing is, I have been feeling depressed by Dh has been away for a week. I opened the door (the postman hangs parcels from the door because he knows I am deaf and never hears the doorbell)and there's this box hanging off it ... I wonder who it's from, the label socks socks from ... Alison ... I rip open the box and oh my gosh it's the pair of koigu knee socks Alison has been working on. I have followed every step of it's making, the time when Alison frogged it because she wasn't happy with the cable, the fears that she's finished one sock but still has to knit the other with time running out, admired the colors of the Koigu and the way the ripples meet togther, and wondered (slightly enviously)whether the recipient would treasure such a work of art. Well, I am the lucky recipient and I vow to wear out this sock, darn it, and wear it until the darns fall apart. Than you Alison it made my day/week and I glory love these socks. Thank you very much for knitting the socks and organizing the 3 enjoyable swaps so far. You are the best.

Wow Chrissie! How lucky because those are indeed beautiful socks! Alison, we all think that you should have a public mailing address so we can send you thank you gifts for all of your wonderfulness!

I'm a little disappointed, I was sure that a jerkin was something for men that was to clothe the lower half of the body in some way... I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm sorely disappointed...
