let the picot roll

co2, bo4, co2, bo4... - only 186 stitches to go!

With the support of my best knitbuds, I sat down this weekend to tackle all that picot edging on crinkle. Although the picot part didn't take quite as long as I had imagined in my nightmares of the last few nights, the picking up stitches part took longer. Five hours over two days, and I'd finally picoted the whole thing. But now all my cute little picots are flipping up along the curled edges of the sweater. Grrrrr.

and I already blocked this sweater!

So I'm blocking the bejeesus out of it again with the aid of a few phone books.

the official blocking tool of the Boston Red Sox

It's the first time I've touched those phone books in years. I knew they'd be good for something someday.

Seriously, why do they even make phone books any more?

I am sure that a phone book with the Yankee logo on it would get that job done in no time flat! :-)

Hey Jocelyn, let's don't bring the trash talk to the blog, eh? ;0) Alison, I just love the way the picot edge finishes this project. It's going to be smashing!!

so that's what you were working on. i was so focused on getting the stitches back the needles of vickie's sweater, i was oblivious. thank you all for coming to my "knitting rescue" on saturday night....i needed it

ha, my phone books have an inch of dust on them! i would definitely have to clean them first before using them for blocking ;)

Are those phone books colorfast? :)

Posted by: Chris at June 26, 2006 10:08 AM

It is really looking nice. All blocked and flat. I hope it stays that way for you.

Oh so THAT's what phone books are for! It looks awesome.

oh its so fabulous! That is the only thing I use our phonebooks for too :) Can't wait to see this one in person!

Posted by: Dani at June 26, 2006 11:21 AM

Gasp, Chris, I didn't even think about that! They haven't bled so far though. Phew!

Looking back at that last picture, I can tell how tired I was last night when I finished all the picots. I thought it was in focus when I took it!

Posted by: alison at June 26, 2006 11:38 AM

Oh why haven't I ever thought of using books to block things down?? That would certainly keep the kitten (and my roommates) off of my knitting.

Hmmm, I wondered how one did a picot edging - now I know (sorta). How annoying that it would curl up after you did all that work.

Looking forward to your modeling the FO!

Hah, and all these years I thought the purpose of phone books was for kids to use as booster seats at the dining room table! ;) The picots look great, hope you can get them to behave!

Posted by: Joanna at June 26, 2006 3:03 PM

Hope the blocking works! I can't wait to see the FO!

I too thought phone books were for booster seats at the dining room table. LOL

Hope you get those picots beaten into submission!

If you look carefully at the picture in Rowan 39, you can see the bottom hem completely and totally flipping up. I am waiting with anticipation to see the results of your blocking. I was contemplating doing more of a picot hem thing instead of a pick-up and bind off.

alison, i have flattened out a picot edge by stitching down the cast off edge to the body. they always flip up lik ethat and its the only way i've been able to get around it. good luck. the sweater is adorable!
