broomsticks and bedrest

Soooo, remember that cold I had when we got back from DC (yes, that was back in August). Well, it hasn't gone away yet. In fact, except for one day this weekend, it hasn't even improved at all. My OB is unsurprised - apparently pregnancy is real good at maintaining lingering colds and stuff like that; it's also real good for not being allowed to take any medication that would actually help. When I reached the two week mark with hacking cough and sinus congestion, she let me try an antibiotic. It helped for one day. So with my throat slightly soothed, my sinuses much deflated and my nose running like a faucet, we made our annual trip to the Davis MegaMaze!

the boys were so excited!

This year's theme was movies and the maze had a big star in the middle of it, along with all sorts of fun areas to find where you can do cool movie stuff like shoot tennis balls at villians, slide through a black hole, and play with funny mirrors. There are always 10 bridges in the maze and this year each was dedicated to a different movie or type of movie. There was "Chick Flick bridge" with a big Fabio cutout, a Blazing Saddles covered wagon bridge, a Pirates of the Carribean bridge with a giant mast and sail, and my favorite, the Harry Potter bridge.

featuring Slytherin and Hufflepuff flags

and look, there were Nimbus 2006's for flying across the bridge

The boys had an awesome time. They loved it so much that they insisted on wearing their Megamaze t-shirts to school today (S actually insisted on wearing it yesterday AND today!).

As for me, well, in the end, I think it was a little too hot, I was a little too sick and a little too pregnant. I was great in the maze, but I'm back in bed now, trying to kill this virus with the only means allowed me: rest and orange juice. Occasionally, I'll feel well enough to knit. I'm trying not to get too much snot on the weasley.

. . . and furthermore, is it just me, or does the new one already look like her big brothers?

Did you ever try eating lots of ice cream to soothe your throat, and inhalations to relieve your sinuses? For the inhalations, I always bring a big pot of water to the boil, then add either a few tablespoons of salt or some camomile tea bags, put a beach towel over my head and open the pot's lid a little bit for the steam to come out. And for the cough... maybe milk with honey, or tea with honey? (Are pregnant women allowed to eat honey? I know that babies aren't)
Resting in bed is always good, too! Hope you get better soon!

Sorry you're sick, love. Glad the boys go off to school and give you at least a little rest. Dorothee's ideas are good; you can also put some eucalyptus essential oil in your hot water. And those Vick's vapor plug-ins really work! I have to think Weasley sweaters would be impervious to a little snot.

One of the best things I found to help with colds/viruses that affect the nose is a neti pot. (google it if you're not familiar)

I tried all kinds of natural stuff when I was pregnant. The neti pot was great and now it does wonders for my allergies, too.

Good luck and have fun growing that sweet baby! :)

Your weasley looks great! I'm always impressed by your knitting. I hope you are adding a little extra room around the waist on this one. :)

Posted by: Tammy at September 11, 2006 11:43 AM

The inhalations mentioned above, with a few drops of eucalyptus oil, do wonders for the chest and the sinuses. (Smell it in the bottle first to make sure it's not one of those smells that will Get You.) Also, chicken soup, mama!
Get well!

Sick with little or no meds - that's just miserable. Weasley lookin' good. Gotta love laptops - don't leave bed without them! :-)

Posted by: Mary at September 11, 2006 11:49 AM

You poor thing! Just rest, rest, rest! Thinking of you!

Posted by: Lori at September 11, 2006 11:50 AM

I know I read your pregnancy announcement post the other day, but my heart still leapt up into my throat for a second when you mentioned your OB today. I'm so excited for you and the boys! The maze looks awesome. We have lots of corn mazes here, but nothing quite that elaborate!

Posted by: Amanda at September 11, 2006 11:52 AM

I hope you feel better. I was going to suggest Vick's but Lorinda already did. She even suggested the eucalyptus essential oil. I do have a different suggestion for that. I put a few drops on a papertowel or tissue (place it in a bowl or plate to avoid damaging furniture) and sit it on a table next to me. I replenish with a drop or two when I can't smell it anymore. It works wonderfully at night.

Congratulations! That maze is just 30 minutes from where we live and we've never been. Gotta get there. Love the boys Croc's!

So sorry to hear your sick. I just got over a cold from the Labour Day weekend and it's no fun. I liked to drink Slurpees to soothe my raw throat, but too much sugar wasn't good for me. I also slept with a Vick Vaporizer in the room. The moist air really helps with sleeping.

Posted by: LaurieM at September 11, 2006 12:41 PM

Being sick sucks! Lauren (SIL) went through the first several weeks of her pregnancy with terribly congested sinuses. She couldn't take anything, but she got some relief from lavage. It's kind of gross, so I'll spare you (and everybody else!) the description -- but if you get desperate to breathe again, just Google it!

(Hey, are those my Halls?!)

Posted by: shannon at September 11, 2006 12:48 PM

Feel better soon! I remember being sick when preggers and it isn't fun. And of course you have the two boys who need mama's love and attention. Rest and be well!

Posted by: amanda at September 11, 2006 12:50 PM

Get well soon! I can empathize like you wouldn't believe...

Posted by: Brynne at September 11, 2006 12:51 PM

I think a Weasley would be familiar with a "bogie" or two. Ron came into contact with any number of bogie items!

Posted by: Roberta at September 11, 2006 12:51 PM

One of my daughters has all the symptoms you mentioned and the doctor says it is an allergy, like hay fever. I thought he was nuts, but he prescribed an inhaler and all the symptoms, including the hacking cough, went away for the first time in months.

You might not want to use an inhaler during pregnancy but perhaps you could ponder the allergy possibility and find some other way to treat it?

For a sore throat, try hot lemon and honey... add about a tablespoon of lemon juice and a *heaping* tablespoon of honey (or is that teaspoon? add enough of each to taste good) to a mug of hot water. I had this same cold. :P Luckily I'm not pregnant, but my asthma has made the cough linger.

Sorry to hear that you are so under the weather. I think chicken soup is the best cure (with a matzo ball if you can find it). Also, plain saline nose drops will help to ease some of the nasal discomfort. Though it's hard....rest, rest, rest (when possible)

sorry to hear about your sickness... a traditional indian remedy for colds and sore throat is to use turmeric. for the throat, you gargle with turmeric mixed with hot water (this works! i've tried it :) ) and for the congestion you burn the turmeric. i have not tried this, but family members swear by it... if you can find a solid piece that works best, but i bet you could use ground turmeric on a charcoal incense round.

Sorry to hear you arn't feeling well. Sucks. My older brother said to me when I was pg with Gil that when you are pregnant the body goes to 'wonder woman' strength...than again it will always do everything to protect the baby...I dare say the sun was good for you...though you must be exhusted.

Posted by: Orli at September 11, 2006 2:21 PM

that's the stupid thing about viruses that cause colds...they're viruses and so won't respond to antibiotics, and the only way to get rid of them is to let the immune system take care of 'em. ugh. i do hope you get well! perhaps not having the boys to watch during part of the day will help?

Posted by: ruth at September 11, 2006 2:30 PM

Er, ragweed came on in August. If that's what is making you sick, it will go away when the first hard frost hits. According to all my dr's (and my kids' pediatricians) there are most certainly are things you can safely take during all months of pregnancy, unless you have particularly special concerns. I've been there/done that with the allergies/massive sinus yuck during pregnancy (and nursing)--let me know if you actually want any advice. :)

OK, I have to suggest a neti pot. Don't be afraid. It works wonders for clearing out the sinuses and if you add a little sea salt it will help kill whatever little infection is living in there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jala_neti

sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. My daughter is also pregnant and she has had a cold on and off for the last three months. According to her dr. she saw today he says it is normal and happens to alot of pregnant women.

So sorry to hear that you're sick. I had the flu when I was pregnant with my younger daughter (now 30) & I felt so much worse than one normally feel with the flu & it took FOREVER to get rid of it. That daughter is now pregnant for the 3rd time & she had a bad cold which developed into bronchitis when she was jusr about at the same stage you are now. It dragged on in one form or another for over a month. Pregnant bodies are so focused on growing babie that there's not much energy left over to fight infections (abtibiotics had only minimal effect on her bronshitis also). Warm tea with lemon & honey is very soothing = I found it more soothing than OJ.

Posted by: Donna at September 11, 2006 6:56 PM

I hope that you recover soon. I always drink a hot cup of lemon juice with lots of honey in it. Always works, and lots of bed rest for the day too. Make the most of the boys being away for the day and rest, rest, rest. You should feel much better I hope.

Posted by: Sue at September 11, 2006 7:19 PM

Have you tried taking Airborne yet? It's all natural so it should be ok with the pregnancy (check with OB of course) and take plenty of Vitamin C and B12. The b12 won't help with the cold but it will help you feel a bit more energized.

Take care of you 2, kay?

Posted by: knittingnurse at September 11, 2006 7:31 PM

When I was preggos with #2, I developed a persistent cough. Could you have pregnancy induced asthma? That is what I was diagnosed with and unfortunately for me, I still have it--almost 3 years later. The sinus thing I had turned out to be allergies. I would see if you could get a simple blood test for allergy triggers and have them test your breathing. Good luck and I hope it is just a tough cold.

Feel better soon! There's nothing less pleasant than being sick and very pregnant :-(

Posted by: Kathy at September 11, 2006 7:58 PM

I'm catching up on my blog reading (after a week of car drama), but the Weasley looks great. Guess I better get my butt in gear and finish mine.

Congrats on the baby!!!!!!

The best thing for any kind of respiratory ailment is to get horizontal and stay there. Yes, drink lots of fluids, do the chicken soup thing, but stay lying down. Try to do as little as possible. In all of my times of life, this is the only remedy that has worked.
Try it.

Posted by: Susan at September 11, 2006 8:19 PM

don't do airborne or zinc supplements while pregnant. what you *can* do is take Chestal for a cough and Natrum Muriaticum for a cold/sinus congestion. both really take a full 4 or 5 days to kick in but they WILL kick the 3 month long cold from pregnancy hell. Homeopathic, and utterly safe.

Also, take fish oil (if you're not a vegetarian) for the omegas. that will seriously help boost your immune system without interfering with pregnancy (in fact, it's good for fetal development, too).

Congrats on being pregnant! I'm really sorry your sick :o( I'm 14 weeks along today and have been suffering a stuffy and runny nose for about 13 out of the 14 weeks. It really does stink that there is nothing we can take to help.

Fell better soon!

Hmmm, my mum says that orange juice can be, umm, snot producing. Try cranberry juice. Works like a charm for me.

Posted by: Angela at September 12, 2006 8:01 PM

Poor girl! Take care of yourself. That maze looks awesome. I'll have to take my nieces and nephews when I'm out east.
