my friends

I found this sweet book at 7th Avenue Books in Brooklyn and couldn't resist buying it for wee one.

I am learning to smell the flowers from my friends the Knitsmiths, who pitched in to help me make 24 little flowers for this hat for wee one. Yes, it's another hat out of Itty-Bitty Hats. I loved the hat as soon as I saw it, but couldn't imagine myself making it unless I was put on bedrest or something. (By the way, this week I passed the date at which I had to go on bedrest while pregnant with the twins. And I'm definitely planning on doing the remainder of this pregnancy vertical!) The Knitsmiths loved the hat too and said they could each make a rosebud or two (or in Lisa's case, twelve!). I just happened to have Rowan handknit dk in six lovely colors in my stash, so I brought 'em in to Knitsmiths and we made a garden.

The rosebuds are really easy to make, just simple tiny garter stitch strips that get rolled up and attached to the hat. You wouldn't think they could ever look very flowery, but put a little green garter stitch triangle leaf (oh yeah, they made 13 of those for me too!) behind them and voila!

Now I just have to make the hat and sew them all on. That'll be easy. Thanks to all my friends!

Oooh, that hat! I have that book, and that one is the bee's knees! Alas, nobody to knit it for. And I think it's a bit young for me ;-) . Stay healthy!

Marvelous, gorgeous and I hope you post a picture when it's complete. Baby knitting is so much fun to do.

Congrats on passing the date of bedrest. :) The hat is simply adorable. I love the little flowers. :)

You are right - that is the most adorable baby hat. Congrats on passing the bed rest date, and cheers to staying vertical!

Oh my gosh, that's the best hat yet! Can't wait to see it finished! I want a grown-up sized one for myself! ;-)

Isn't that the book that has the adorable birthday cake hats? Oh, I sure hope you make a pink version of that one, (and perhaps two slightly larger blue versions? Or should there be one red and one yellow version, instead?) ;-)

That hat is precious! I think I might need to get that book.

I adore that hat!! I have been reading your blog for months now (just before you anounced the wee one was on the way!). You are a wonderful mother (I love the fact that you post the little projects that you do with your boys), and an exceptional knitter....Can I be you when I grow up?? OK, Ok, so I'm already almost 35....Keep up the great work...I can't wait to meet your new little one and see her dressed in the beautiful items you create....via blog world of course. Yeah knitsmiths, way to pitch in!...I'll plant flowers in my garden for each one in the spring.

That book was my son's favorite (and still is) from birth. He's two now, but starting at about 6 months he would sit and have me read it over and over.
You should also get busstops by the same author. It has the same wonderful illustrations.

Um, how far along was that, exactly, that you were put on bed rest? (Curious knitter in early stages of pregnancy with twins)

As a general rule, I don't knit for babies but there's a special one on the way and that hat might be the thing that puts me over the edge. Are there worthwhile boys' hat patterns in there too? (don't know the sex yet...)

Posted by: Beth at January 10, 2007 12:23 PM

Oh yeah, Beth, lots of cute stripey hats and spotty hats as well as some with boy type embellishments like a boat or football. And then there's the cutest hat ever, which I am totally sizing up for my boys, the snowman hat!

What a totally wonderful way to get wee one's hat made. So sweet!

OOOOOH. that hat is sooo cute. I had forgotten about it. I'll have to dig it out & make one for the most adorable granddaughter (she'll be 2 months old Friday).
