structions

can you find the daisy hat in the middle of all those legos?

I spent the entire afternoon with the boys working on our "structions". They picked out their biggest lego sets to work on and I had my itty bitty hats book.

how to make a car suspension

how to make a wheel assembly for a helicopter

how to make petals for a daisy hat

While the boys built a car and a giant helicopter, I mananged to make all the petals and sew them to the top of the upside-down daisy hat. The boys were actually watching my progress, asking how I was putting the petals on. They were really interested! And they thought it was so cool that I was following 'structions just like they were.

And here's bear/dog with the finished hat!

It came out super cute (despite the fact that my gauge must be a little different from the desired gauge in the book and I could only fit five petals on the top instead of six), but I think it still looks just like a daisy! This may be my favorite of all the hats I've made so far. Of course, I can't really see all the hats I've knit, since baby's stuff is all piled up in a heap in our bedroom. Next week we'll finally be setting up baby's room. And then I promise a pic of all the hats and all the booties all together!

Very sweet. In our house instructions are always destructions.

I love it! It's adorable. I got that book for Christmas and it has been so much fun seeing you knit the hats from the book. I haven't tried any yet, but you are inspiring me.

Oh, that's cute! I especially like how the white part extends up toward the stem. Nice detail.

Posted by: Ruth at January 26, 2007 10:21 AM

Adorable hat - but where are the car and the helicopter ?

Posted by: Regina at January 26, 2007 10:27 AM

I absolutely love it...I have a soft spot for daisies!

Posted by: michelle at January 26, 2007 10:42 AM

Regina, they've made the car and helicopter many times before and I've even shown them on the blog before. Here they are when they got the sets for their birthday and built them for the first time! :0)

The hat turned out beautifully! (Hmm, I wonder if there's a way to combine Legos with yarn...)

Posted by: C at January 26, 2007 10:46 AM

Oh yeah there is C! Check out this (link from Craft magazine).

Posted by: alison at January 26, 2007 10:53 AM

Haha, that's brilliant! It would be really cute if you could get the boys to make you one, but I guess that's probably a little too adventurous of an undertaking for them. Oh well!

Isn't there the old maxim that odd numbers are more pleasing? It was meant to be. I will have to make my own baby hat soon, our family dentist is due next month and my husband thought a tooth hat would be just the thing, complete with 'root' ear flaps. I'll have to share the results!

Posted by: Sonya at January 26, 2007 11:17 AM

so adorable, and I think 5 petals is perfect.

Posted by: Juls at January 26, 2007 11:20 AM

So cute! And with all the hats Miss Thing now has, we may never see her bare head until she's 2!

Posted by: Mary at January 26, 2007 11:28 AM

I love the hat!! I can't wait to see the picture with all the hats in it.

How do you store all the legos? My kids are getting into legos big time and we only have one set so far. Once we get more than one, I don't see how we'll ever be able to make the thing in the set again for not being able to find all the pieces!

Posted by: Nancy at January 26, 2007 12:12 PM

Nancy, check out this old post for a picture of the lego bookcase. ;0)

Posted by: alison at January 26, 2007 12:26 PM

Oh, that is such a sweet hat...it sounds like the boys might be interested in learning to knit?

Posted by: Sarah at January 26, 2007 12:34 PM

Dear Lord...that is adorable...must find baby...must knit hat....(rubbing hands together)

Posted by: Darci at January 26, 2007 12:40 PM

I just got the hat book from the library yesterday and this one has to be my favorite. Super cute!

Posted by: Sherilan at January 26, 2007 1:16 PM

That hat is SWWWWEEEET! When she gets bigger, you might like the felted flower hat from Pick up Sticks (pickupsticksonline.com). It's called the Flower Topper. I made it for my toddler and its adorable.

So cute!

Posted by: wendy at January 26, 2007 1:53 PM

So cute! I think five petals is the perfect number.

Posted by: Anne at January 26, 2007 2:43 PM

I love that hat! Watching you make all these baby hats makes me wish I had that itty bitty hats book right now! Your wee one is going to have the best dressed head, that's for sure :)

Posted by: Tracey at January 26, 2007 3:17 PM

So adorable!

Posted by: Mary Heather at January 26, 2007 3:27 PM

That hat is so cute! I'm going to have to buy that book even though there is not a baby in sight for my future again for awhile. :)

Posted by: Tiffany at January 26, 2007 4:08 PM

My daughter was walking by and looked at my computer. She laughed and burst out with, "THAT is cute!" I agree. Sweetest hat pattern EVER.

Posted by: carrie at January 26, 2007 4:15 PM

Squee! So pretty! Also, Legos rock.

Posted by: Elinor at January 26, 2007 5:28 PM

Oh my, seeing all those legos puts me in mind of last Christmas when my now 8yo got the lego viking fortress thingy. Mommy got to put it together because it was deemed "to hard" and it was pretty big too. Oh yeah-Another absolutely adorable hat. Can't wait to see all the hats and booties side by side!

I usually lurk but I had to comment since I got the Itty Bitty Hat book in the summer and have made a few hats out of it. Your hat is darling! I made this hat in the summer for a baby gift and I only could fit five petals on as well. The recipient said she put it on her daughter all the time and everyone comments on it. Your daughter will be adorable in it!

Posted by: Kimber at January 26, 2007 10:10 PM

That's a very sweet pink.

Posted by: Nadia Lewis at January 26, 2007 10:34 PM

This hat is sooo cute!! Can't wait to see the nursery!

Posted by: Rebecca at January 26, 2007 10:44 PM

The hat is incredible! I just got the book yesterday, and am ordering some yarn next week. That hat is first on the agenda. =)

Posted by: Faith at January 27, 2007 2:41 AM

I'm reading this blog, because I love the pictures of these cute hats and things you're making from this book. I just wish I knew someone who was also a bit pregnant so that I have a reason to buy it and start one of these supercute hats, too! :D

Alison, I'm assuming you've been inundated with this link, but you were the first person I thought of, when it was sent to me.

That hat is actually the reason why I bought the book in the first place! It is so cute, and I love the shade of pink that you ended up using for it!

Posted by: Meg at January 27, 2007 7:49 AM

The hat is very cute. I'm definitely going to have to look out for the book.

Posted by: Katie at January 27, 2007 8:30 AM

Did you get the corrections for the petals? or did it work just fine without them? I'm starting mine tomorrow...
Would a 33 year old look funny with a flower hat? ;-)

Posted by: Annie at January 27, 2007 9:45 AM

I looked at your sidebar today with new interest.
Weasley Wonders?

Posted by: emmy at January 27, 2007 10:56 AM

just found your book on amazon Congrats! looking forward to it.

Posted by: erin at January 27, 2007 11:58 AM

Oh another one! I love it. Actually, in the 2nd printing of Itty-Bitty I changed it to only 5 petals for the smallest 2 sizes of the hat. So you are absolutely correct to have 5 petals and your gauge is perfect. This really is the most popular hat in the book. Thanks for sharing.

Posted by: susan b anderson at January 27, 2007 3:07 PM

I always draw my flowers with 5 petals.
btw, is that real question for your readers, because I spotted the hat amongst the legos.
It came out toatally cute. I have to make one just for the hell of it.

'member me..got the book 2 days ago after seeing all of yours! I made daisy hats for my 3yr old dgd's LOVEY LAMB with ear openings from a peachy(448)Plymouth Encore yarns in worsted with yellow(215) daisy, and pale lime stem (3335); a matching one with a #10 for DGD; and another matching one for her 3 MTH OLD SISTER! All in 2 days!!! Such fun. All because of your blog. THANKS

This is going to be the best dressed baby in town!!

Posted by: Deb at January 28, 2007 8:48 PM

Thanks Susan and Annie: CORRECTIONS! Looks like the author actually changed the instructions so that the smaller sizes only call for 5 petals. That explains why I couldn't fit that 6th petal in there!

Posted by: alison at January 29, 2007 8:40 AM

That hat is the cutest! Almost makes me want another baby (almost).

Posted by: Jackie at January 29, 2007 10:20 AM

Very cute, although, that puppy looks pretty attached to the hat, will he share nicely with the new little one?

Posted by: Jennifer at January 29, 2007 10:26 AM

Legos! The only way I could keep my sanity during our Lego years was to tell myself that it would pass...it would pass...

It did, but not until they were teens. I'm happy to say I can walk anywhere in my house barefoot and not fear stepping on those little sharpies!

All the best,
Jan
