can't knit, contracting

neglected knitting in bookcase

No knitting this weekend. Each day I tried to do a little bit of preparation on the baby's room (so far she's got a changing table and a wardrobe, but no bed, no bookcase and hubby's desk and computers are still in the room with her). I'm not able to get too much done because as soon as I'm vertical, my belly hardens into a solid ball and it pretty much stays like that. Non-stop Braxton-Hicks contractions! I'll do a little and then by the afternoon, I'm so exhausted from all that contracting that I end up sitting or lying on the sofa for the rest of the evening. Still contracting of course, but not as often, just every time she moves, or I move, or I touch my belly, or have to pee, or drink something. So only then - ha, ha.

And now, no more leaning over this computer. It's making me contract.

sounds like she's anxious to meet everyone. Glad to hear you are taking it easy in the evenings. If only life could slow down enough that you could do it during the day too!

Ah yes, the joys of pregnancy. Keep your feet up as much as possible and relax. {{{hug}}}

Posted by: Samantha at January 29, 2007 10:52 AM

sounds like we're in a similar place right now! I'm telling my belly daily that I need 2 more weeks, just 2 more and then I promise to sit with my feet up and jsut knit all day. Honestly!

Posted by: kerrie at January 29, 2007 11:04 AM

Gee, I think I'd use the contractions as an excuse to sit and knit and make hubby do all the work to get the baby's room ready ;-)

Take it easy.

Oh wow...must be pretty soon, eh? When's she due?

Posted by: Elemmaciltur at January 29, 2007 11:24 AM

Oh I remember that well these contractions while pregnant with my second one. Do not ask how often I asked the gyn for help because I was afraid to get the baby to early.

Best Wishes!

Posted by: Sibylle at January 29, 2007 11:25 AM

Eew, I remember those. They were waaay worse the seond time around. Hope they ease up! I remember being told to drink lots of fluids to help ease them, but I don't remember if it helped.

Posted by: katie at January 29, 2007 11:27 AM

Wow, I hope you get plenty of rest and can knit laying down!

Posted by: Carrie at January 29, 2007 11:40 AM

Rest up.

Posted by: Carole at January 29, 2007 11:42 AM

REST! That beautiful baby can sleep anywhere in anything as long as her family is safely beside her, REST, REST, REST. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Posted by: Angie at January 29, 2007 11:53 AM

I have to say, when I read the title of this post, I thought it was going to be about your not being able to knit, so you were contracting out your knitting to others. This idea remained until the end of the post. No mention of other knitting ringers. Maybe I'm still a little groggy this morning? Be well.

Posted by: Sonya at January 29, 2007 12:29 PM

Oh, Alison, I had that too. Try to rest. In Germany they gave me magnesium tablets to help the muscles relax. Is that an option here?
Take care, Ellen

Posted by: Ellen at January 29, 2007 12:56 PM

hoooo boy, I hear you! I'm 32 weeks along and having BH as well as sciatic nerve pain. Ohh the joys of pregnancy! Hang in there. :)

Posted by: Liz at January 29, 2007 12:57 PM

Rest up! I am not having any contractions but can't bend over, even brushing my teeth is too much leaning.

Posted by: Kristin at January 29, 2007 1:08 PM

And you know BH contractions are painless? Yeah, right - one of my favourite lines from Friends: "No uterus, no opinion." Take it easy. She doesn't need a bookcase just yet...

Posted by: Anne at January 29, 2007 1:30 PM

Enjoy them. That sounds wierd I know, but seriously, enjoy those BH contractions. They are your body getting ready to give birth. With 2 and 3 I used them to practice relaxing for labour. Let that uterus get as hard as it wants, the rest of you can be calm and relaxed and just let it do what it's gotta do. Hubby and the boys can get the room ready.

Posted by: gina at January 29, 2007 1:39 PM

Poor thing. I'll be sending you good energy to help you a bit with it. Hugs from my side of the pond :)

Posted by: Pilar at January 29, 2007 1:47 PM

*wince*
yay, I remember those..and supposedly they get worse the more pregnancies you have. Finding that true?

Posted by: Lynn at January 29, 2007 2:16 PM

I'm with Gina - relax and use the contractions to prepare for labor (and fool yourself into believing that it will still feel like it does now!)

Posted by: Patty at January 29, 2007 2:22 PM

OOOO - I remember now how much worse the Braxton Hicks contractions were with my second pregnancy than the first. With the first one, I couldn't understand how women would mistake them for labor 'cause they were so obviously milder & lasted for such a short time. Not so with the second one. I had a planned C-section & was afraid I was going into labor so many times. I think your boby is telling you to rest. Listen to it.

Lol after the comments from another Anne.....I remember being stitched up after my daughters bith(the 1st) I said Owwww at one point, and the doctor....male of course...said, literally.....''it can't hurt.. you've just had a baby'' !!!!!! sighhhhhh i wish i'd been as old then as I am now....well sort of......otherwise.....rest up while you can!! braxton Hicks don't hurt!!! lol that comment must have been from a man!! tho I guess its relative.

Posted by: Anne at January 29, 2007 3:51 PM

Are you sure you should be even vaguely thinking about another sockapalooooza? I'm sure we can all wait......your family comes first.x

Posted by: Anne at January 29, 2007 4:02 PM

Send some of those contractions over here, would you? I'm 5 days overdue and I want this show on the road! ;)

Posted by: Bertha at January 29, 2007 4:21 PM

Sounds like that baby's got you hostage--you just need to do whatever she wants! Treat yourself to a nap. :) Hope the BH subside soon. . . .

Posted by: Amanda at January 29, 2007 4:33 PM

Oh is that all? Why then, start knitting again.
Seriously - you poor woman. You must be exhausted - get to bed while you can! Hope the BH doesn't continue for too long.

Posted by: Miss Scarlett at January 29, 2007 4:38 PM

Oh, REST and drink plenty of water! Lay with your feet up, let everyone baby you. Pretty soon the baby will be here, and you'll be doing everything as usual again. Now's the time to take care of you and her. Seriously, no matter how hard it is REST! I know it's hard, I was down for only 2 and 1/2 weeks w/ my 3rd, but it was worth it! Take good care of yourself!

Posted by: Danielle at January 29, 2007 5:40 PM

Ah yes now while reading the other ones, I remember Water and Magnesia did make it better and I also got an Oil from my midwifes with herbs in it which also helped fine.

Posted by: Sibylle at January 29, 2007 6:02 PM

Oh, those darn Braxton-Hicks! That was my least favorite part of my 2nd pregnancy. I had them all the time (and even went into the hospital for false labor because I was having them regularly and they HURT - they weren't doing squat, though). Hang in there - you're almost through it!

Posted by: Chrissy at January 29, 2007 6:27 PM

Drink drink, DRINK! As much as you can. You could be dehydrated, (It is sooo dry) and that can increase contractions. Water, juice, tea, gatorade, pedialyte, anything, just keep yourself hydrated. Always have something to drink within arm's reach. If you come to the hospital with contractions, what's the first thing we do to you?? Start an IV, and 9/10 times, the contractions stop with decreased activity and fluids. Then, we send you home to dehydrate and be active again. Drink up. And hang in there.

Posted by: paulanancy at January 29, 2007 6:29 PM

oooh so close, so close! How exciting:)

Posted by: Deb at January 29, 2007 7:38 PM

It's almost time! How exciting! Those BH contractions are a pain, though, literally. A little concerning, a lot uncomfortable. Yuck.

I got my Spotlight Cotton today, thanks so much! My very first contest yarn, woo hoo!

Posted by: Janelle at January 29, 2007 10:28 PM

Too funny, Sonya! That would be brilliant! ;0)

Posted by: alison at January 29, 2007 10:36 PM

Sounds like things are moving along! Knit, get some rest, and be sure to sleep in a couple of times if the boys will allow :-)

Posted by: Kathy at January 29, 2007 10:59 PM

Hope you are feeling better. My package arrived today. Thank you for the yarn!

Posted by: Oiyi at January 29, 2007 10:59 PM

I hope the contractions have eased up so you can get some rest.

I just found this link to some pictures of the USS Harry S. Truman, made of Lego. I thought your boys might like to see it, if they haven't already.

I'm so excited for you! I'm over the top happy that you're nearing your due date. Yay! Don't stress too much about the desk. Babies need so little space at first.

Posted by: carrie at January 30, 2007 7:09 AM

i'm w/ Angie.
I never had braxton hicks...but you are so close to the date, be mindful of them...time them...if they begin in a timely manor then it might not be braxton...(w/ Gil my water broke at home and when we were already driving to the hospital I started feeling the contractions.)
I do remember reading that if you don't drink enough you can get contractions so perhaps you need a glass of water.

Posted by: Orli at January 30, 2007 11:43 AM

I had a ton of Braxton hicks contractions. They brought my daughter 3 weeks early. Be sure to tell your OB that you are having so many. They are probably making you dilate and thin out.

My daughter would have been due tomorrow but came January 17th. She's so sweet. Now if we can just get her to sleep at night.

Love your knitting. I'm on a big crocheting kick right now.
