moving on

S has been ready for his new blankie for days. He could see that the second strip was almost done and would ask me every night if I was going to sew it together. He'd tell me that if I finish it while he's sleeping, I should slip it in his bed and take his old blankie out. What a big boy! I was so proud of him, I made sure to spend some time over the weekend to finish it up.

The crochet seam was easy and fast. I had to redo it a couple of times to deal with the two strips not being exaaaactly the same length, but it was still a breeze. Sarah Dallas really has me sold on these strip-style blankets - so much more pleasant to knit and piece together than an afghan made with dozens of squares! And voila, finished blankie...

S loves it! He wanted to cuddle with it right away on the sofa and try out the edging.

Then he got his old blankie and brought it down to give to me for safekeeping. He talked to it as he carried it down: "I have a new blankie and you are tearing apart. I'm bringing you to mommy." I'll be wrapping it up as a keepsake from his childhood.

So that's one blankie down and one very satisfied customer.

OMG you finished that so quick. S is so cute and so grown up too...you are a wonderful mummy.

Posted by: Orli at February 19, 2007 2:08 AM

Awww, what a relieved and happy smile he has. Looks like the edge passes inspection!

Posted by: Kathy at February 19, 2007 2:23 AM

Aww! What a great mom! As a long-time blanket-devotee, this whole story has made me happy.

Posted by: susan at February 19, 2007 3:02 AM

What a wonderful smile!
Greetings from Barcelona.

Posted by: debolsillo at February 19, 2007 3:28 AM

Aaaaaaaaah! Doesn't B want a new blankie too?

Posted by: Marie-france at February 19, 2007 3:36 AM

Aw - that smile says it all! What a great Mommy. I love the crochet method to join the panels. I hadn't thought of that. Brilliant.

Posted by: Jennifer at February 19, 2007 4:03 AM

Hooray to the very beautiful new blankie for super sweetie S!! ;o)

Posted by: Maryann at February 19, 2007 4:38 AM

Aww bless him!! I am almost crying at him talking to his blankie and I can't even blame pregnancy hormones or anthing.
The blanket is ace and such a quick knit?

Beautiful. I must say I really dig the crochet edging and doing it up together. So groovy, now I can't wait to see how wee one's blanket 's gonna look like.

Posted by: mel at February 19, 2007 5:51 AM

Awwww......GirlPants has her own blankie (codename, MiMi) and really understood the importance of the blankie. She asked the important question--is it soft?

Last week she had a bout with the stomach bug, and when she vomited the MiMi took a direct hit. While it was washing she kept wailing "But I need a soft thing to sleep with!" Thank goodness for modern laundry machines!

Posted by: suzanne at February 19, 2007 7:05 AM

Aww, that is so sweet! Love the last picture. You are the best mommy ever!

Posted by: Carrie at February 19, 2007 7:25 AM

Young S. looks so very happy!
What a good mommy you are :o)
His new blankie is perfect!

Posted by: Miz Booshay at February 19, 2007 7:47 AM

S. seems like a child who can handle change gracefully. Kudos - giving up a blankie is painful!

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at February 19, 2007 7:52 AM

Oh hooray! I'm so happy he loves it. :) You rock Mommy-Lady. :)

Posted by: Samantha at February 19, 2007 7:59 AM

Looks like a happy kid with a bright new blanket. I like the design.

Posted by: Chery at February 19, 2007 8:04 AM

What an awesome life lesson you have taught him - that we can provide the very most important things to the ones we love using our hands and time rather than just running to the store!

Posted by: Marie at February 19, 2007 8:06 AM

Terrific blankie and done in far less than the 90 days it takes to yarn a blankie ~ I think love had something to do with it!

Posted by: Bonny at February 19, 2007 8:18 AM

I love that S was big enough to understand that he had to give up the old blankie, but small enough to still stay goodbye. It brings tears to my eyes!

Posted by: Christy at February 19, 2007 8:21 AM

aww! What a sweet boy and a sweet story! :D

Posted by: Liz at February 19, 2007 8:46 AM

What a big boy you have there! I'm so glad he likes his new blankie, and that he was able to say goodbye to the old one so easily.

Posted by: Ruth at February 19, 2007 9:12 AM

That is a happy ending to a wonderful blankie saga. :)

Posted by: Anne-Caroline at February 19, 2007 9:26 AM

Awwwwww. Rest well, old blankie. Welcome new blankie!

Posted by: Steph VW at February 19, 2007 9:31 AM

Oh how sweet! *sniffing back a couple of tears*

Posted by: erin at February 19, 2007 9:32 AM

such true happiness in that face.

Posted by: Kathleen at February 19, 2007 9:34 AM

Absolutlely love the blankie and he looks so pleased with it. How does the crochet joining method work? I need to seam up lizard ridge soon and that method would look great...

Posted by: mary at February 19, 2007 9:34 AM

that is just too sweet! i think that i still have my blankie from childhood all ziplocked up and in a closet somewhere. it's a nice thing to keep around.

Posted by: gleek at February 19, 2007 10:05 AM

That is such a great story.

Posted by: claudia at February 19, 2007 10:05 AM

YAY!

Posted by: scoutj at February 19, 2007 10:23 AM

So sweet and you are super Mom because you "yarned it" in fewer than the 90 days S allotted.

Posted by: Sherry at February 19, 2007 10:48 AM

Oh that looks so great!!! What a sweet boy too! Glad you could yarn it for him. That is just so funny!

Posted by: Kim at February 19, 2007 10:54 AM

Beautiful blankie, Alison. And what a handsome young man he's turning out to be.

Posted by: Nathania at February 19, 2007 11:12 AM

Love it - the green edging makes the colors even better, and the story is so sweet!

Posted by: Donna at February 19, 2007 11:28 AM

When I'd noticed the green before, I thought it was a provisional cast on, and couldn't figure out why you'd need one -- now I get it! The blankie turned out great, no wonder you've got such a happy recipient!

Posted by: Sarah at February 19, 2007 11:40 AM

I love the design for S's blankt -- so bold and fresh and "big boy". Even if your boys don't learn to knit themselves, they have learned to love knitting and to value the creative process.

Posted by: nona at February 19, 2007 11:47 AM

It looks fantastic! You are the best mommy ever.

Posted by: Oiyi at February 19, 2007 11:56 AM

Aww Awww AWWWWW!!!! The farewell to his blankie is one of the sweetest things EVER. Definitely brings a tear to my eye. The bond between a boy and his blankie. Awwww!

Posted by: Laura at February 19, 2007 12:17 PM

Awwwwww - if there is anything sweeter than a 5 year old boy [most of the time anyway), I don't know what it is.

Posted by: Donna at February 19, 2007 12:48 PM

What customer service! :) I'm curious about the sturdiness of a crocheted seam as opposed to mattress stitch or backstitch, etc. Maybe in a follow up post some day you can tell us how the new blankie is holding up. I love the design you chose!

Posted by: Karma at February 19, 2007 1:21 PM

I love the blanket--boyish and bright. Really great. He'll always remember what you did.

Posted by: Jennifer at February 19, 2007 1:32 PM

I love the new blanket! Most little kid blankets give me a rash, they are so lame. All goofy with babish things all over. I love the bright colours and the simple pattern. Your son has great taste.

Posted by: Tanya at February 19, 2007 2:36 PM

What a great, positive transition from old to new blankie. Isn't it amazing how much comfort a little handmade fabric can give? And what's even more wonderful -- the warm, comforting childhood memories that he'll carry a lifetime.

Posted by: Mary at February 19, 2007 3:24 PM

I'm so glad that you're keeping his old blanky. My mom kept the bits of mine that were left. I got one when I went to college, which I still have in an envelope. The very last piece was pinned in the inside of my wedding dress as my "something old." Oh, how I cried when she gave it to me.

Posted by: kristin at February 19, 2007 3:27 PM

So SO precious! His "blankie goodbye" really touched me.

Posted by: Tola at February 19, 2007 4:44 PM

S looks just as pleased as can be! That is soooo sweet and wonderful!

Posted by: Danielle at February 19, 2007 5:24 PM

It's nice to see the S blanket saga come to such a bright and happy ending. That crochet seam is very clever. I would've never thought to do that but I'll have to try that next time I have to piece something together.

Posted by: sara at February 19, 2007 6:34 PM

Glad he loves his new blankie! It's very nice. I'm sure he'll love the fact that you kept his old blankie one day. I have a couple of blankets that I made when mine were babies and some special clothes that I will never part with.

Posted by: Sheri at February 19, 2007 6:37 PM

Awesome, that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Big smiles from me to S!

Posted by: Johanna at February 19, 2007 7:49 PM

Awww! What a sweetie. He looks quite pleased with his wonderful new blankie.

Posted by: Lara at February 19, 2007 8:04 PM

That is adorable. That being your son and the blanket! What a little man. :)

Posted by: Lynn at February 19, 2007 8:22 PM

That is wonderful when someone loves your knits that much. I was ahhhing like I was watching a love story unfold, which this is sorta. I can see the headline now...when S met Blankie

Posted by: Nubiancraftster at February 19, 2007 9:20 PM

He is just beaming! What a lovely gift - the new blankie, and you recording his words and saving his old blankie for him.
Oh, how do they grow up so fast? Offering to have you make the switch while he is sleeping.

Posted by: Miss Scarlett at February 19, 2007 10:30 PM

Hope B doesn't feel left out...he doesn't get much mention in your blog.

Posted by: Anne at February 20, 2007 2:58 AM

you must be so proud. The blankie is fab and S is lovely

Posted by: susan at February 20, 2007 4:54 AM

Anne, I've mentioned before that B's blankie isn't quite as ripped up as S's. B uses his blankie less too, so it hasn't been as much of an issue for him. Still, stay tuned for a B blankie update....

Posted by: alison at February 20, 2007 8:49 AM

That is just about the sweetest kid story I have ever read. What a mature little man!

My husband still had his blankie. I snuck it to my mother, and she trimmed it into a rectangle and put on edging, and we gave it to our then-new baby (now almost 3). Jack will not be parted from Mr. Blankie, and it is pale blue so he looks just like Linus. It is all ripped up now but very much loved. The other day a little shred came off, and I snagged it for a "someday" scrapbook page about Mr. Blankie.

Posted by: Beth in WI at February 20, 2007 3:23 PM

Awwww, so sweet!

Posted by: Julie at February 20, 2007 4:25 PM

The blanket turned out darling. But I can't get over how grown up S looks in that last picture!

Posted by: Laurie at February 20, 2007 4:47 PM

Awww... that's so sweet. What a great replacement blankie!!

Posted by: Allie at February 20, 2007 5:38 PM

That is so sweet! Aren't kids so precious with their active imaginations? When my son was first being potty-trained, he like to talk to his new "Thomas the Train" undies.

Posted by: Rachel at February 20, 2007 7:55 PM

Such a cute post! I put it on my "I Like It A Lot" Tuesday post. :)

Posted by: Lelah at February 20, 2007 8:51 PM

Awwwww, that was such a sweet entry! I'm glad he likes it, and was so understanding about letting you wrap up his old blankie. What a big boy! Your blanket came out beautifully. I like the crocheting together detail, too.

Posted by: carrie at February 21, 2007 6:32 AM

Wow, I can't believe you finished that so quickly! It turned out great!

Posted by: C at February 21, 2007 11:51 AM

Oh, his eyes are just shining. You're a great knitting-mommy!

Posted by: Amanda at February 21, 2007 2:15 PM

That is the sweetest thing I've ever heard! I sure hope that my little guy loves his blankie that much. (Sort of makes me feel bad that I wasn't knitting when I had my first, he has no blanket.)

Posted by: Cambria W at February 23, 2007 6:27 PM

My mom saw that my daughter's blankie was looking, well, less than desireable (as in "ripped up") So she came up with a workable idea. She made a special pillow case shaped thing-out of patchwork-using some of her baby clothes scraps, pieces of her tshirts(the pictures) and what not. And the stuffing for the pillow? The folded up blankie. So A can slide her hand in a special slot-just to keep in touch-and it still won't be out and looking disreputable. The pillow top has lots of textures and colours. It is a real gem!

Posted by: Deb at February 24, 2007 9:10 AM

awww! what a sweet little post. so cute. i'm glad he likes his new blankie. my X has one his nana quilted that is dissolving daily. i don't think he's going to be able to give his up so easily.... really, the thought of taking this one away scares me. it was dropped off at nana's for repairs yesterday and X woke me up at 5:50 this am to see if we could go over and see if it's ready.... wish wicked speed to nana's fingers for me :D

Posted by: rebecca at February 24, 2007 9:26 AM

So precious!
I'm sure the new blankies will help the boys feel loved even though the baby is coming soon....
