square circle

This is what I did during the Academy Awards.

Thanks to the long Oscar show, the baby geek spiral sweater is finally nearing the finish line. The last time we saw the front, I'd worked three sets of triangles, just getting the spiral started. Now I'm through 6 of 8 times around and it's really starting to look like a spiral. To be honest, it's actually rather annoying to knit, but the end result is cool so I'm hanging in there and getting it done.

But oh man, am I nervous that this sweater will be too small already for its recipient. I glanced at my archives and was horrified to find that I bought the yarn for this project almost a year ago! It's pathetic how long it's taken me to complete it! I may have to stay on the sofa today watching the replay of E's Pre-Oscar show and finishing this sweater.

The red carpet and blue chenille - a perfect combination, right?

oh man, I so LOVE everything about it, the colors, the chenille YUM and the geometrical shape is so worth it. I want one :-)

If you have enough yarn could you go around the swirl an extra time & make it bigger? It's turning out so cool I love the colors you picked!

The blue looks like a little tidal wave. Very cute.

So, how do you get the ends to stay put with the chenille? I love chenille (I know I'm likely to have my Yarn Snob card revoked for that) but I can never get the ends to stay hidden.

I like the design. I wonder if I could get away with wearing it myself?

Posted by: Pigwotknits at February 26, 2007 10:52 AM

I'd suggest making it bigger than original, too and then intended recipient can wear it longer! It's a wonderful piece!

With all the pregnancy power knitting you've been doing, are you doing it all continental? I recall you had some soreness in your right hand a few months ago and had switched to continental, and was wondering if you are now a 100% continental knitter? Perhaps that's part of why you're so productive lately? (Especially w/ all the seed stitch in S's blanket?)

Whoops! I meant all the seed stitch in B's blanket....

That looks so cool! I love the wave look.

Ooooh - I've had my eye on that sweater ever since I bought Loop 'd Loop - haven't got as far as buying the yarn, though. I'm sure my kids will be far too big for the sizes by the time I do get around to it... sigh.

I wish it was as easy to make the sweater bigger as just going around the circle another time or two, but the entire rest of the sweater has been knit and I have to make this piece match those. If I were just starting now, I'd make a larger size, but this is my last piece left to knit. My only option now is to finish it up and cross those fingers!

No Mary, no continental knitting for me right now. I'm still (and probably always will be) a thrower. I do switch to continental for some projects to give my right hand a rest, but I'm nowhere near as fast or as consistent with my left hand. And despite all this nesting knitting, I don't have any hand pain right now.

As for the chenille, Carrie, I'm not having any problem keeping the ends woven in. I'm using Crystal Palace cotton chenille, which is (as far as chenille goes) a very comfortable chenille to work with. It's more fuzzy (like wool) than wormy (like a slicker rayon chenille can be) and the ends rub up against the stitches on the WS and stick where I put 'em.

Let's hope the recipient didn't have a big growth spurt over the past year. I've been crocheting a baby blanket that should have been done last July and I don't think the baby will be a baby anymore by the time I finish it. Oh well.

I also gave Continental knitting a shot, but I'm still faster the regular way.

P.S. I think I said this previously, but I think that pattern is so cool.

I love the blues and greens! It's going to be a fantastic sweater.

Wow - that green really pops! I've never been a big fan of green but lately find myself loving that bight, bright shades - especially combined with blue like this sweater.

Love that "tsunami" square! It really pops in those colors. Hope it will still fit the recipient because it's going to be a great sweater.

very cute!

can't wait to see the finished product -- even if it doesn't fit (heaven forfend), this pattern is a work of art. :)

That looks so cool! Nice job! I LOVE the colors!

That's really cool. And pretty!

That really does look like a wave. It makes me think of that Hiroshige (?) print of The Great Wave. I'd almost be tempted to embroider a little boat there in the curl of the wave.
