big blankie, big brother, little blankie, little sister

B, number one son, Thing One, and the one who always wants to be first, is being so patient as I slowly finish up his blankie. The two strips of his blankie are both finally done and all that's left is the seaming.

But I haven't been able to get to it for days. I'm not sure how long his patience will last though - I found a long strand of yarn from his old blankie on the floor this morning, so it would seem that the situation is starting to get critical. I'll have to find a way to convince baby L to let me get that seam done soon!

And S, whose heart is even bigger than his dimpled cheeks and who I can tell already is going to be an awesome big brother, wanted to help wee one stop crying the other day so he grabbed the little version of his original blankie and laid it over her. "She can keep my little blankie," he said.

He even offered to bring her his new blankie too if it would help. What a sweetie!

I have to say, what absolutely caring and adorable children!!

Posted by: Anne at March 28, 2007 10:37 AM

Oh, that is so nice of "Thing Two"! I still think it is amazing that you are doing any knitting at all with newborn, and a colicky one at that! Don't they say that if you get a shower during the day with a newborn that its a good day? (I never thought so, but that's what a told myself when I was raising twin infants last year...)

Posted by: m at March 28, 2007 10:59 AM

Wow, she's 'dorable.

She's getting cuter every day, if that's even possible! And it's nice to hear that her older brothers will protect her! :-)

Your children's loving gestures towards one another are the wonderful result of you and your husbands great parenting! You have a lovely family. Baby L is just adorable...I look forward to every picture you post of the children and of your knitting. They always bring a smile!

Aww, I love big brothers. My brother was my best friend growing up. :) My favorite photos from childhood have us both together in the frame. Your little one is a lucky girl to have two big brothers to look out for her!

Posted by: Kristi at March 28, 2007 1:44 PM

man. that is cutie and SHE is sooooooooooooo beautiful...

Posted by: tania at March 28, 2007 1:49 PM

that is so incredibly sweet. Bigger kids seem to understand that little babies need a little extra care (or blanky time).

Posted by: Juls at March 28, 2007 1:56 PM

It may be many years before the wee one appreciates having big brothers, but she is a very blessed child to have such loving brothers. It is also a good thing you have blogged this, because there could be days (weeks, months) when you could be hard pressed to remember this care and affection.

My son (youngest of three), at age 4 once sang his 'special' song to a fussy baby, trying to help comfort him. The song was the song I would sing to him at bedtime. It was very precious.

heyyyy patience be blowed.....big brother no.1 is old enough to understand babies and wee ones...he will wait for his blankie and LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVE it. Alison..remember you have 3 children now...you don't have to be a super mum...just be you..........

Posted by: Anne at March 28, 2007 3:18 PM

Wee one is Beeeautiful. buttttttttt please can I ask you to spare a prayer for my daughter's sister-in-law who has just had ( at 38 weeks) a still-birth....as yet, no reason known. my heart is full for her.x.x.x and i hope you will send prayers to nicolle and graeme.

Awww, your son is really sweet. And your new baby is extremely cute too. Are you going to show any previews from your new book soon? ;)

Okay, I'm sure you know since, you are a Cancer as well [I'm talking Zodiac here] but Cancers are all heart. Very gracious of B. and oh my g-d baby L is PICTURE PERFECT. She's a movie quality baby =)

Speaking of THINGS. Gil's favourite book now is Cat in the hat, I started reading it about a month ago or so and he makes me read it before each nap or bed time. He has memorised it as well.
WHENEVER I get to the part about Thing 1 and Thing 2, I can't help but think about your boys. They are the image that pops in to mind with thier red knitted shirt and blue hats, shaking hands, flying kites and running around. LOL

come to think of it, I think i'll look up your archive and show Gil the photo of them in costume.

Oh yeah, I also have the cat in the hat DVD but I think the book is nicer.

I can't believe Baby L is giving you as much knitting time as she has! Your boys sound like loves. I have a girl (also an "L") after three boys and I tell you what, those baby sisters have got the life!!

Posted by: Monica at March 29, 2007 7:55 AM

What a sweet and dear child. And as always, your work is completely lovely.

Best,
firefly

Aww what a sweet big brother

Posted by: Karoline at March 29, 2007 10:21 AM

Now, I am hoping that I'll be half as diligent as you -- my niece is now 15 mths old and I barely have a few projects for her!

Can I take the heat as a lame excuse? :)

Posted by: Emy at March 29, 2007 2:20 PM

She is such a beautiful baby, and so blessed to have wonderful big brothers. S offering his beloved blankie to comfort her is pricless!

Posted by: Bliss at March 29, 2007 5:54 PM

Have you thought about adding in pieces of B's old blanket into the new one? Maybe for the seaming? That way it can still be the "same" blanket. The idea occurred to me a few days ago -- don't ask me why, I was in the middle of kitchen stuff.

Posted by: bibliotecaria at March 30, 2007 9:03 AM

That is so beautiful! What a considerate young man.
