the leaves are growing

It's finally spring here in Boston. The leaves have filled out the trees at last. And they're growing on my needles as well.

I'm past the heel on my sock pal's first sock and am still loving this embossed leaves pattern. I'm looking forward to that spiral toe!

As I approach one sock done, I'm beginning to think that I'm going to need some sock blockers. I've never bothered to block any of my socks before, but this is lace - it'll look so much nicer blocked out, won't it?

It will! :-) I made some out of coathangers which worked well for a while, but I think it's worth investing in the "proper" ones for really posh and impressive looking socks..!

They look great! I love that pattern. It's been on my to-knit list for ages.

They will look nicer blocked out, but beware you don't stretch them out too much. :)

You can make your own sock blockers --

oooooh, so pretty!

Oh how I want post and impressive looking socks! ;0)

Oooh, Jess now I'm afraid about stretching them out. How do I know what "too much" is?!

Posted by: ALISON at May 21, 2007 9:26 AM

Alison, I've successfully blocked socks (for Sockapal2za, actually) just by pinning them out like any other knit. That might be a good solution to the not stretching them too much dilemma, since you won't be pulling them over an inflexibly sized blocker.

I made some blockers from coat hangers as well and they are perfect. It's really easy and i think they do the same job as bought ones.

Dude, I feel so behind! I haven't even found yarn for my sockpal yet!! Yours looks awesome!

Posted by: ruth at May 21, 2007 10:44 AM

Beautiful!! Can't wait to see the toes. And yes, I think these will look better blocked.

Posted by: alotta.knittin at May 21, 2007 10:46 AM

Yes, I made those socks and they looked so much more fabulous after a good blocking!

Posted by: Danielle at May 21, 2007 10:54 AM

Those are gorgeous socks! I always think it's a shame that socks, by their very nature, are hidden from view most of the time, especially when they're so impressive.

For my own pair of Embossed Leaves, I just hand wash them and lay them flat to dry like the rest of my handknitted socks, and they look just fine when I wear them. So don't worry too much about blocking them--they'll look fabulous once your pal puts them on!

Beautiful! Yes, these do look much better blocked - I just finished/blocked mine and I'm pleased with it. :)

Posted by: Amanda at May 21, 2007 12:50 PM

I've not blocked my socks before either. Don't know that I would other than washing them.

Posted by: Wanda at May 21, 2007 12:54 PM

Ooh I like yours, alison! I'm making the same socks, only I'm using the PGR short row heel. I was thinking the same thing about sock blockers. They look kinda skinny unblocked (mine, I mean.)

Posted by: peggy at May 21, 2007 12:56 PM

That is a perfect color for these socks. They look great!

Posted by: Sulafaye at May 21, 2007 2:16 PM

Well, you might consider, that when your pal puts on those socks, they are going to be blocked instantly... ;-)
As you probably guessed, I don't block socks.

And anyway, your socks are going to be stunning.

I never blocked a pair of socks until yesterday :). They are a gift so I thought I'd try the coat hanger trick (being is it was free and therefore the right price.) The ones I made had the square heel like yours (short row heels fold nicely and are less worth blocking). I didn't even wet the socks - just put them on the bent hangers in the a.m. and took them off in the p.m. I would say that the effect was worth the financial and time costs - socks folded into the box more neatly than when unblocked. I say try it at least once with the coat hangers....

Gorgeous socks. I've never blocked socks but then all the socks I knit are for myself or the grands. I can understand why you'd want to block gift socks, especially lace ones.

They look great, but will showcase at their best if blocked. I wish I had properly blocked out my monkey socks, because the pictures I've seen of the blocked socks look worlds better than mine.

socks are looking beautiful! I finished the first of my embossed leaves sock and the spiral toe is much fun. You're going to love it!

Posted by: Kim at May 21, 2007 5:22 PM

That pattern is one of my two favorites. I've knit it twice so far, and plan to knit it many more times. And you are right- blocking makes it look even nicer!

Posted by: Allison at May 21, 2007 6:55 PM

Ooh! I like those! They're on my short list, and yours look loverly.

And if I haven't said so yet, congratulations on your beautiful little girl. Nate wants another one of those.

Posted by: LauraA at May 21, 2007 9:08 PM

You will love the spiral toe as well. I chose not to block mine, I like the crunched up leaf look.

Posted by: sheryl at May 21, 2007 9:27 PM

I have done cables (in practice) and knit socks but the thought of combining the two is terrifying to me - great job!!!

Posted by: Barbara at May 21, 2007 10:55 PM

I made some sock blockers out of cardboard. They worked well, but won't last forever.

Posted by: erica at May 22, 2007 12:45 AM

I have used this pattern for socks, and my advice would be not to block them too much. The pattern looks beautiful on the leg and foot as is! Great color, beautiful sock, lucky sock pal.

Posted by: Katherine at May 22, 2007 9:29 AM

They do look good blocked out, and that spiral toe is really something. Might have been my favorite part of the whole pattern!
