because everything should have embossed leaves

Presenting the emli bonnet: a baby bonnet with embossed leaves ("emli" for short)! As I was working on my sock pal's socks and starting my own, I kept picturing a lovely embossed leaves hat for wee one. I could not get the idea out of my head - I had to make one!

I knit the hat from the top down, just like the embossed leaves socks (from Interweave Knits Winter 2006 and Favorite Socks), so the leaf pattern has the same direction and same beautiful shape, and I chose a relatively fine-gauged yarn to maintain the delicate look of the leaves. Since it is an openwork lace pattern, I decided it should be a summer hat in cotton and widened the brim for some shade for baby's face. I also added little picots to the bind off edge to accent the leaf motif. The top ribbing is cinched in, pulling the leaf stems together bouquet-style into a tidy bundle.

I love how this bonnet came out! It makes me wish I'd picked a prettier yarn to knit it in. This Jaeger Trinity was the only sport-weight green-ish cotton I had in my stash. But the color is truly almost fluorescent yellow-green. The Trinity is nice though and I would recommend it. It's a silk tweed blend like Rowan's summer tweed, which, for the record, I dislike, but the fine gauge seems to keep it from bothering my hands as the summer tweed does. The slight tweedy texture and bright baby colors are perfectly matched to the idea of a baby bonnet, so I do feel that it was a good choice. I just wish I'd used the ball of pink I have in my stash instead of this funny green. But wee one is still a picture of loveliness, even in chartreuse.

That is the sweetest thing...I'm totally inspired by it! What a great idea.

Posted by: Jennifer at June 15, 2007 10:28 PM

Inspired! And very cute! Wish I had a wee one to make it for, but even my godchildren and neices and nephews are beyond this stage. Will have to wait for grandchildren...

Blessings!

You're killing me with cute you realize?

Love the hat. She looks good in it. Do you plan to do a second in the pink?

I love it! She looks so cute in it too!

Posted by: Zonda at June 15, 2007 11:40 PM

OMGPONIES AGAIN!! So much adorableness happens on this here blog - the hat's precious, but then when you put the precious hat on the baby, everything's just preciouser. (yeah, preciouser. it's a word.)

Posted by: alyson at June 15, 2007 11:48 PM

Aww! I love that idea!

Posted by: Sarah at June 15, 2007 11:56 PM

Who says you can't make another in pink?

Oh my gosh, look at those chubby cheeks!!!!!!

Is she teething?

On a cuteness scale of one to ten, she's a 15

Posted by: lindsey at June 16, 2007 12:32 AM

Beautiful hat!

Posted by: Andrea at June 16, 2007 1:16 AM

Sweet. I made something similar this year w/ cables...where you knit in circle, no decreases, do an eyelet row and run an I-cord through and pull it together, it was knitty pattern.
see here: http://orliskfp.blogspot.com/2006/11/sugar-on-snow.html
Only problem is I used the wrong yarn, I fell for something the LYS showed me...totaly wrong for the hat.
Wee one is the cutest, looks like she started teething.

Posted by: Orli at June 16, 2007 4:32 AM

Simply just adorable!!!

Posted by: Karen S at June 16, 2007 4:50 AM

Gorgeous. I love Summer Tweed as it happens, and I have a ball of dark pink which I need to 'use up' and a two-year-old of unbearable cuteness... but I'm already working on four things, including an Errol. OMG.

Posted by: Helen at June 16, 2007 6:03 AM

That's fantastic!

Posted by: Suz at June 16, 2007 6:27 AM

That is so sweet. What a charming pixie babe!

Cute-o-meter overload! Great idea!

Posted by: Dava at June 16, 2007 8:13 AM

What a super and clever idea and hat! Very cute baby...oh yes, the hat only adds to the cuteness.

Posted by: Angie Simon at June 16, 2007 8:48 AM

Brilliant!!!
Love it!

Posted by: Michelle at June 16, 2007 8:58 AM

Hey Lindsey, there's a link to the pattern in the first sentence. Here it is again. :)

Posted by: ALISON at June 16, 2007 9:15 AM

It's a fairy elf hat, just like in picture books! So green is perfect.

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at June 16, 2007 9:22 AM

The hat is too darn cute! It reminds me of lettuce cups but much, much cuter (don't know that I would advocate putting lettuce on a baby's head). Your enthusiasm for the Embossed Leaves may just kick my ass into gear and finish the other sock which has been hibernating for the better part of a year. UGH!

Posted by: Ava at June 16, 2007 10:35 AM

Adorable. And the model is getting so big!

Posted by: Rachel at June 16, 2007 10:40 AM

now that's adorable! i agree that the world is a better place with embossed leaves.

Posted by: lynette at June 16, 2007 10:52 AM

oooooooh that is so adorable. And it would look lovely in so many colors! Pale blue, lavender, white.... maybe one for every day of the week? ;)

Posted by: PlazaJen at June 16, 2007 10:58 AM

That is adorable!

Posted by: Romi at June 16, 2007 11:01 AM

Wow, it's lovely (one handed typing, baby is asleep on a shoulder or I'd wax on....)!

Posted by: xtina at June 16, 2007 11:13 AM

cute, cute, CUTE! makes me think of salad for some reason...

Posted by: cosy at June 16, 2007 11:56 AM

Awwwww!
It looks like that first bright yellow-green of new leaves in the spring -- that's OK! (Although I supposed if it really bugged you, you could overdye it a little greener; but if you're like me, by the time you got around to it, she will have outgrown it.)

Posted by: Cathy-Cate at June 16, 2007 12:35 PM

what a great pictures the hat is one of the cutest I have seen. Can you please tell where you got the pattern so I can make one for my granddaughter.

Awww, that is soooo sweet. I love the colour...and those embossed leaves? swwooooon!

PS I just saw this on Knitting Pattern Central and immediately thought it would go so well with the fabulous pink baby bellbottoms you made for wee one.

What a darling hat! Thank you so much for sharing the pattern. I know a baby who will be wearing one soon. :-)

Posted by: Sarah-Hope at June 16, 2007 6:13 PM

So it's adorable, so is the peanut, but do I get to make one too. You left out the how many stitches portion and the changes made. Curious minds want to know!!!

Love the finger chewing, too cute.

If famous photographer Anne Geddes could knit, I'm sure it would be something like this! Can't you see Baby L in one of her photos, perhaps sitting in a garden amongst the tomatoes and cucumbers? Beautiful inspiration, beautiful work.

Posted by: liz anderson at June 16, 2007 7:24 PM

Sarah, it's all in the italics in the pattern. If you've got a different gauge yarn or want to make a different size, then just do a little estimating and chose a multiple of 16 to cast on (a larger size will need more than 80 stitches - try 96 -, a smaller size will need fewer than 80 stitches - like 64 -, a heavier gauged yarn will need fewer than 80 stitches, a thinner yarn will need more than 80 stitiches...). And you can try on the hat as you go, so that length is completely adjustable to desired size. Happy knitting!

Posted by: ALISON at June 16, 2007 8:02 PM

Can I just please borrow wee one for a day? shes sooooooo cute in that hat - heck shes just so cute!

Posted by: Melb at June 16, 2007 8:18 PM

That is a beautiful hat! I wish I had a baby girl to make it for... do you think my toddler son will mind? :)

I was shopping etsy and noticed a pair of knit pants that were identical to the ones you made for wee one. I HATE it when people steal other people's ideas and sell them as their own. I hope that's not the case.

Hi, I've been a lurker here for a while, but just had to post when I saw this hat - it is adorable! Thank you so much for the pattern; I've got a few new babies that could use some cute new hats!

Posted by: Roe at June 18, 2007 12:08 AM

seriously, cutest little girl!

Posted by: peggy at June 18, 2007 12:34 AM

Great job on the hat! I think the green works fine for it. Makes it look more... leafy.

Posted by: Holly at June 18, 2007 7:24 AM

Love the hat and booties from the other day. The booties made me remember a wonderful pair that my son wore, in various sizes, until he was too big. They were much like the ones you have pictured except the bottom of the foot was lambswool suede with the fuzz turned to the inside. With your skills, you might try that for a winter bootie.

Posted by: Patty at June 18, 2007 8:13 AM

It is beautiful in that colour! Your wee one looks adorable the hat highlights this. Might you have written that one down? I would love to make one similar for my wee one…

Posted by: Tusa at June 18, 2007 8:19 AM
