july 13, 2007

i'm off to see the wizards

I finally got out to see the Order of the Phoenix last night!

This was supposed to be a picture of the poster at the theater, but I think it better captures my excitement than the actual poster. Woo hoo! I wasn't disappointed.

**Warning, I'm going to talk about the movie, so if you don't want to hear, skip this paragraph!** Order of the Phoenix was very good - and that's saying something, since I really haaated book 5. Okay, maybe hated is a little strong, but I didn't like Harry in it, certainly didn't like Dumbledore in it and then there were the obvious jerks in the book like Fudge, Umbridge, Bellatrix.... But I really loved the Weasley twins' exit from Hogwarts and was happy to see justice done to it in the film. I was very relieved that Harry's whiny teen outbursts were left out and that the whole Umbridge situation was treated with more humor than horror. Neville was given some good scenes in this one (looove Neville!). And I definitely liked the style of the film and the use of the Prophet to segue between scenes and stories. Overall, I was very pleased with how 5 managed to get all the important things in, still I was left feeling like something was missing. There might have just been too much plot to squeeze into one film to leave much time for anything else, but I didn't get the sense that we really shared what Harry was going through. It was more like we were just sort of being told how he was feeling (by Luna most of the time). I feel like we were more with him in the scenes in the Shrieking Shack and by the Whomping Willow in 3 and through all the Triwizard challenges and at the graveyard in 4. I don't know. Maybe a few more viewings when it comes out on dvd will change my mind.

A few more viewings on dvd will definitely help me better see all the amazing garments they put in there! The costume department did another incredible job with lots of cool new pieces to replicate. There were house vests and cardigans, Umbridge's cropped pink lace sweater, her pink fluffy angora sweater, and her amazing pink houndstooth poncho. We got another peek at Ron's patchwork afghan from the last movie and he's got a new maroon jumper, this one with plaid squares on the front! The Weasley twins were sporting chunky zip collar sweaters with a fun retro/Charlie Brown style zigzag motif and their bright green holiday waistcoats were hilarious! Then there were Mrs. Weasleys' knitted gifts for all of them (you know that the costume department had to have been let loose for that scene!). My favorites were definitely Hermione's Gryffindor striped hoodie (gotta make one of those) and Trelawney's bag. Anyone have plans for knitting these or others already?

And speaking of Harry Potter, listen to my Harry Potter podcast with Guido of It's a Purl, Man and be sure to come to the Potter party at Webs on Sunday (1-3)!

I cannot wait to see the movie, I have my tickets to see it tomorrow, but now I'm practically drooling to see all the knits you've described! I didn't think it was possible to be any more excited, but now I am!

Posted by: craft-chick at July 13, 2007 10:28 AM

i took the boys to see it yesterday afternoon. this one was more intellectual than action (as was the book). the letter he wrote to sirius cracked me up though. "i'm always angry, and alone." duh, boy, you're 15! (my older son will be 15 in august, i can SOOOOOOOOOOOO relate). i really think they should have made umbridge more on the horror side. that was the whole point of her. she was bound and determined to punish harry for his "lies" and di dn't care how she did it.

believe it or not, my favorite was the hat hermione was wearing when they were coming back from the hogshead, when ron said "who are you, and what have you done with hermione granger?" when she said breaking the rules was exciting.

i'm tempted to go see it by myself, as i was having to hush the boys (12 & 14, and had to talk to the screen, sheesh)

Posted by: minnie at July 13, 2007 10:47 AM

I saw this movie last night also - quite enjoyed it. I agree with you that Harry was angsty without me feeling like I needed to slap him multiple times (which was my feeling when I read the book). I did love the knits in the movie too!

I am a bit dissapointed that they didn't show more of Harry's grief at losing Sirius.... but I love the character Sirius Black.

Posted by: melissa at July 13, 2007 11:27 AM

Yeah, Melissa, Gary Oldman was really good in this one. (And good looking too!)

Posted by: ALISON at July 13, 2007 11:30 AM

Did I see Hermione in a ribbed v-neck Gryffindor sweater?

Posted by: leah at July 13, 2007 11:37 AM

***caution: plot spoilers here!!***

I thought that they took a lot of liberty with the plot in the end! The whole thing about Harry writing around on the floor, internally fighting Voldemort... where was that in the book? And Bellatrix *did not* give Sirius the Avada Kedavra in the book, either. And Cho was the snitch?

Overall, I was satisfied, but this was the first movie to change the story. I'm just a little shocked, is all!!

Posted by: Lelah at July 13, 2007 11:39 AM

I went to see it at the last showing last night too :) I loved Ginny's knitted (or crocheted?, couldn't quite tell) vest on Christmas! Yes, I agree lots of good knitted items in this film. I was actually thinking of you and your book when I saw them all :)

Posted by: connie at July 13, 2007 11:47 AM

I loved Luna's little purple sweater, it looked like it was crocheted. Overall I didn't care for the plot changes. Some of the action was missing, like Hagrid’s fight, it needed those action scenes. The film was very talky. I was sad to see the dept of mysteries sequence severely cut too.

Posted by: Wanett at July 13, 2007 11:50 AM

I love the Gryffindor pullover.I kept trying to get a better look at it (I saw it twice - once with and once without my kids and husband). I thought I saw small cables running up it. Maybe it was just too late at night? lol

Posted by: Tara at July 13, 2007 11:50 AM

Right there with you on the hoodie! There was a scene where something was going on, and I couldn't really tell you what, other than the three of them were standing on the covered walkway talking about something...I was too busy studying her hoodie.

Posted by: alyson at July 13, 2007 11:54 AM

Yes, Leah, that's the hoodie that I was talking about!

Ooooh, yeas, Connie and Wannet, there were those two very cool crocheted sweater/capelets. Ginny's was green and Luna's purple sweater was really nice!

Definitely tiny cables and ribs there Tara, you're right.

Posted by: ALISON at July 13, 2007 11:54 AM

We also enjoyed the movie very much. I think they did about as well as they could given all that was in the book. Then, I wouldn't have minded having a movie twice as long just to have more included, but I'm just a huge fan. Of course, we definitely would have needed an intermission. My husband said he was floating towards the end of the movie.

Posted by: Sarah at July 13, 2007 12:31 PM

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on the movie! I thought the movie was excellent, but they never live up to the books, even when the book was not well-liked.
I look forward to making Hermione's sweater, it was my favorite...and it doesn't seem like I am the only one. It was a little more understated and will be flexible for all different kinds of styles.

Posted by: Erika at July 13, 2007 12:42 PM

I'm not sure I can wait for the movie to come out on DVD to see all that knitted goodness again! I saw that hoodie and immediately started thinking of a pattern... :)

About the movie, I had mixed feelings - I loved it as a movie, but I hated what they left out. Of course, it would have been a 10 hour movie if they'd filmed everything. (I'm not too fond of ALLCAPSHARRY in the book, either, and thought they handled it quite nicely.)

Posted by: Holly at July 13, 2007 1:14 PM

I can't wait to see this movie! You lucky duck you! We are debating whether or not we are going to take our 5 year old. She has seen the first 2 movies, but the last few were just too scary. How did you find this one?? Would it be too scary for a kid?? She did fine with the big snake and the spiders, but we think the Voldemort scenes in the last movie might have been a bit much.

Posted by: Trish at July 13, 2007 1:15 PM

Yeah I saw hermonie's littel hooded red and yellow top, it looks VERY cute. ya know Pure & Simple is that the company that makes those plain patterns that are easy to follow? They have a hooded raglan which I think would be easy to get the stripes into, tho I don't think her's was a raglan....

I couldn't believe some of the whiney reviews I read on the news sites, I don't know what these people want out of a movie but I thought they did DANG good considering how hard it is to fit all that in. I agree I wanted MORE but well thats why we can go back and read the books, now with the movie's lovely visuals in our minds!!

Posted by: pixie at July 13, 2007 1:20 PM

I loved the Weasley twin sweaters...I definitely need to figure that one out. And I also love the cable vest/bolero thing that Ginny wears in the last scene.

Posted by: Christy / Not Hip at July 13, 2007 1:23 PM

I definitely agree, Pixie, they did a really good job on the movie, especially when you consider how BIG book 5 was and how annoying some of the main characters were.

Trish, as I suggested, they did an excellent job of turning the book into a PG-13 movie by making the Umbridge stuff a little more humorous than scary and the fighting scenes at the end are also handled smartly so they aren't too frightening. It's definitely not like the end of movie 4. There were at least two families in our viewing who had small children with them and they didn't come out looking scarred. But it's your decision. My boys don't know HArry Potter and are frightened by some Spongebob episodes, so I would never take them! BUt if your kids know the books....

Posted by: ALISON at July 13, 2007 1:26 PM

Having read all the books so far, but never having seen a whole movie (I live under a rock, so I only get to catch bits and pieces on tv), I am new to the movie mania. Not sure what my point is. I wish I could see you this weekend, it's just a little too far to justify right now.

Have fun at WEBS!

Posted by: Jennifer at July 13, 2007 1:36 PM

Wait a minute, aren't you going to figure out all that Harry Potter knitting FOR us??? I'm with you on the "Harry as Anakin" whiny stuff. Although he does eventually get over it in the book, thank goodness. And thank goodness they did a silent scream when Sirius bought it. Teenage boys just do not scream convincingly. I think Bellatrix and Lucius Malfoy are the most sinister characters in the movie. Somehow Voldemort just doesn't radiate as much pure evil. I wonder why that is? Whereas in the book, I felt that Voldemort and Umbrage were the most sinister.

Posted by: Tan at July 13, 2007 1:39 PM

I thought they skimped a bit on the final battle scene. I was in awe of the sheer number of knitted items in this one. Hermione's Gryffindor striped v-neck was also my favorite--I had to force myself to pay attention to the actual scene as I was getting lost in the details of the sweater!

Posted by: Anne at July 13, 2007 1:54 PM

I don't like all the *Hollywood* endings they are tacking on to these films.

I can see why you hated Harry in book 5. Your boys are young. My son was 15 when book 5 came out, and I work as a secondary teacher (I have been in high schools and middle schools). Believe me, Harry was acting like any 15 year old. "No body understands me!" "I am so grown up, but everybody treats me like a baby."

You'll see when your sons are older.

I won't tell you what girls are like. You won't believe me.

Posted by: Lesa at July 13, 2007 2:16 PM

I also went to go see it last night and I did wonder if they were going to do justice to the twins' exit stage left. I was also oogling the knits. My favorite has to be Umbrich's pink angora ponchette thingie. Did you notice the little crocheted cat pinned to the front?

Posted by: Chante at July 13, 2007 2:20 PM

I'll be seeing the film as soon as I can manage it and am looking forward to more HP knits :-)

Posted by: Sarah-Hope at July 13, 2007 2:33 PM

I saw the movie last night too. I admit that I am not much of a Potter fan but I live with fans and all seemed to think this movie was a lot less than the others.

Posted by: Karen at July 13, 2007 3:05 PM

I am definitely going to try to recreate Trelawney's Bag! As soon as I can get a good look at it, anyway...

The movie was just so visually beautiful, it was sad that they switched so many things around to streamline the story. :(

Posted by: Raellyn at July 13, 2007 3:56 PM

I'm dying to get a better look at the vest that Ron got for Christmas...

I must have totally missed Trelawney's bag!! Dangit, I guess I have to go see it again :)

Posted by: Libby at July 13, 2007 4:01 PM

Lesa, I didn't say that I didn't understand why Harry was whiny in book 5, I just didn't enjoy it. ;0) I really feel that the books are essentially a story about a boy growing up and that preteen/teen phase is definitely a part of it, but still I'm glad that they didn't focus on it in the movie.

Posted by: ALISON at July 13, 2007 4:59 PM

I was DEFINITELY scheming about that sweater of Hermione's. But it's a pretty fine gauge, might be quite a slog to handknit.

Posted by: Stella at July 13, 2007 5:27 PM

I saw the movie last night, and like y'all, was scoping out the knits. Loved Hermione's Gryffindor sweater, and Luna wore some pretty sweaters too - the crocheted cropped purple sweater, and she was wearing a blue one later on that was pretty, too. I think I liked this one better than movie 4.

Posted by: Elizabeth at July 13, 2007 6:00 PM

I agree this is my favorite film, dark and moody and from my least favorite book (odd). I really liked Luna's crocheted cropped top and Umbridge's outfits were wonderful, that pink mohair coat (yummy, yummy). I did miss Ron making the team and Dobby (guess we're not going to see him again on screen). I understand Jo Rowling told them that if they left out Kreacher they would be sorry (he must play a critical part in Deathly Hallows. I am going to see it again tomorrow (hubby is out of town) and pay closer attention to the knits this time and less to the story.

Posted by: Isobel at July 13, 2007 6:51 PM

I've got my reservation at WEBS and I can't wait to ask you to autograph my copy of your book! Sad to say, I haven't had time to start knitting anything from it yet...

Posted by: Allison at July 13, 2007 8:21 PM

Oh Look! Go to the Leaky Cauldron and you can view the "Behind the Magic" video about the making of the Order of the Phoenix and you can pause it to see some of the details in the aforementioned sweaters! Try here" http://video.the-leaky-cauldron.org/video/799

I am still looking forward to seeing the movie and DO appreciate the heads up on each of these sweater sightings. It will make my first viewing of the film even better! Thanks!

Posted by: Patti purls at July 13, 2007 8:52 PM

Since no one has mentioned it, I LOOOOVED Voldemort's new get-up! I also noticed that Ginny's vest's were very Norah Gaughan--I saw cables and hexagons!

No one has mentioned the saddest omission of all--S.P.E.W. knitting! I was really looking forward to that, and surely they must know by now how knitters feel about Harry Potter. Oh well.

Posted by: Cirilia at July 13, 2007 8:58 PM

I saw it last night in Leicester Sq, then walking home we walked past Hamleys where they had some costumes from the film in the window! Hermione's stripy sweater, (one of) Ron's ugly sweater and Harry's zip up jacket.

Posted by: Sarah at July 14, 2007 2:49 AM

I took my son to see it (he might be a little young, but, alas...). I was quite pleased with how the new director handled the actors (specifically Dumbledore and Hermione). There was a lot less weird hysteria in this one. I agree that Harry's angst over being shut out was a bit petulant (though not at all unrealistic), but I think OotP serves as a tool in the larger story to bring Dumbledore and Harry into a closer connection that feels genuine. It's nice to seem Albus make a mistake here and there.

I was totally thinking about your book and patterns at the end - I can already picture Ginny's yellow cabled vest in about three different yarns.

Posted by: Mel at July 14, 2007 4:02 AM

Thanks for the movie review and heads up on all the knits! (Hm, pink houndstooth???) Off to see the movie this weekend.

Posted by: Ina at July 14, 2007 8:11 AM

I like Neville, too, the poor chap. And Luna was perfectly realized, unlike Dumbledore who is just so wrongly embodied by Gambon. Our feelings about Movie 5 in general? Eh, so far; it lacks humor although the book did too. We missed the parts about Ron and Hermione becoming prefects which contributes to both the "English Boarding School" charm of the series and to Harry's 5th year funk. The various directors have medddled with the story for cinematic purposes so much, that now one feels they're having to play catch-up so that important elements for the denoument are not left out. Where was the locket the students found at Grimmauld Place, for example, or the theme of Mundungus stealing things, which are quite sure to be plot points to come? Oops - I'm getting overly involved! Re: the knitted stuff -- we were too busy watching to take careful note of anything but the most obvious, like Hermione's striped sweater. There will be much re-viewing in our lives!

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at July 14, 2007 9:36 AM

This is my first time ever making a comment. I was so happy to see your review of the movie. I have already seen it twice, if you can believe it, and reading what you had to say about the knitted items really helped me to look out for them the second time around. I too adored Hermione's sweater. i would hate to burst anyone's bubble, but feel i must say that I don't think it was a Gryffindor sweater. It appeared to be maroon with pink and white stripes. It's still gorgeous. I loved all the knits in the movie so much. I was really happy with the movie itself too. they did a pretty good job of choosing which things to keep.

Posted by: Shanon at July 14, 2007 10:43 AM

It is reassuring to find that 5 is not a favorite book even though it is valuable in moving the epic along. I look forward to seeing the movie. I had already gathered from trailers that Umbridge is not as horrifying in the movie (they had better cast my kids' principal--she's pink and fluffy and power-hungry--but I can't confess to that for 4 more years). Will keep an eye on the knits.

Speaking of--good wishes for WEBS!

Posted by: Melissa G at July 14, 2007 12:12 PM

Don't forget Luna's cute purple jacket. It may be crochet, but it was cute enough for me to sketch it out and start looking at the crochet section of my stitch dictionary :)

Posted by: Regenia at July 14, 2007 4:40 PM

First time here, I googled curlicue coverlet because my mom is a knitting nut!!! and was telling me she'd love the pattern. It is gorgeous and I would like to knoow how to get her the pattern and additional info re: yarn and needles. Can you help?
Thanks

Posted by: sherri Plessinger at July 14, 2007 8:02 PM

It looks like I am not the only one who thinks book 5 is not nearly as good as the other ones. That said, I thought the movie was great. My favorite knitted items were the twin striped scarves for Fred and George. I also loved how Ron was bitching about how his sweater made him look like a dork. So funny.

Posted by: Rebecca at July 14, 2007 10:17 PM

I was pretty quiet all through HP5 and then I leaned over to a friend because she owns a yarn shop and I couldn't control my desire for Ginny's orange vest. Looked like the equestrian one in Interweave a while back. I nearly peed my pants with wanting the thing. I didn't even get that excited for Snape or the Weasley twins, my favs in my least fav book...

Posted by: Jessica Powers at July 15, 2007 1:49 AM

I loved the book, and the movie was fantastic - I loved the scene where Ron was asking Harry what his kiss with Cho was like, he was really sweet.

Also thought that Umbridges office with the cat wall plates was so funny

I loooooved Luna's purple shrug cardigan, really cute.

Also I was thinking...She has to make Charmed Knits 2....right?

Posted by: faith at July 15, 2007 3:22 AM

The general concensus in our house, where HP rules, is that they took our least favorite book and made one of the best movies of the series! I think that inability to "connect" with Harry's feelings is (1) very typical of the age of his character and (2) one of the devices that JKR uses to isolate Harry. They even talk about it in the movie, as one of the methods Voldemort uses to vanquish enemies. Isolate, weaken, annihilate! Holy shit! I just figured out book 7! JKR IS VOLDEMORT! *snort* ;)

Posted by: Jo at July 15, 2007 11:46 AM

excellent review of the movie (I agree completely--I was expecting to dislike this one and was pleasantly surprised!) and I immediately wanted to do a Hermione hoodie! I hope someone writes up some good instructions or links to a pattern that they think would be easily-adaptable! :)

Posted by: Lori at July 15, 2007 4:48 PM

I liked the block style afghan on Ron's (I think)bed at the end as Harry is packing his trunk. Lots of cool hogswarts colors. Will definitely need to pause the DVD for greater detail!

Posted by: Rachel at July 15, 2007 9:40 PM

Soooo jealous of you all...have not been to see HP5 yet and am already drooling over the knits you've described. Oh yeah, and I'm excited to see the movie too. :D

Posted by: Tammy at July 16, 2007 11:52 AM

I saw the movie Thursday night, too. I noticed all the cool knitted things, too. I like Hermione's hat and scarf (albeit plain), and I loved her striped hoodie, too! I kept thinking, "I bet people are working on patterns already..."

Posted by: Sheri at July 16, 2007 12:38 PM

Did you catch Ginny's knitted vest in the Christmas scene? That may have been one of my favorites!

Posted by: Heather at July 16, 2007 2:39 PM

Ginny also wore a very modernized fair isle sweater that was kind of similar to the shape of Hermione's Gryffindor hoodie-- gorgeous! I just kept noticing (not having been a Knitter when I saw the last movie) that in every scene, at least 2 of the main kids is wearing cool knitwear! Neville even had on a cool zip sweater that looked like mosaic work with bands of color... very, very cool. Maybe they knew about your book and wanted to give you more to do? :-)

Posted by: JD at July 16, 2007 4:27 PM

I can't wait to see the patterns people come up with from this last movie!

Posted by: allie at July 16, 2007 11:26 PM

I loved the movie also, but I'm sort of on the edge about Hermione's sweater that everybody loves. I don't see how it's so Gryffindor-ish? It's just a cabled red sweater with a thin line of white and pink no? Most of the time it looks a little golden because of the colour correction, but when I saw it again in IMAX last night I could tell it was just white and pink. Personally, I'm drooling over her norwegian sweater with all the yoke designs. So pretty!

Posted by: Laurence at July 17, 2007 11:34 AM

I skipped the paragraph about the movie...haven't seen it yet. I skipped reading over the other comments...haven't seen the movie yet. Read the book when it came out (how many years ago), but (again) haven't seen the movie yet.
Do I detect, from your comments about the wonderful garments worn in the last movie that we will be seeing a second book (or addendum) with the hoodies and such? We knitters would like to be able to keep up with the Mrs. Weasley.

Posted by: Laurie L. at July 17, 2007 11:40 AM

I agree that the knitted items were fabulous, especially the hoodie (I noticed that right off!) I loved the book, loved the movie. I have seen it twice and have plans to go again on Saturday night.

And I totally agree that Sirius was hot. Way hot.
