lion and tiger get started

S has been asking again. "Weren't you supposed to be making our tiger animals?" Riiiight. Honestly, I've got too many other things on the needles that need to be done sooner, so I'm about as focused on these stuffed animals as the boys are. That is to say, I work on them a little bit every two weeks or so, which is just about the same time that the boys remember that I was supposed to be working on them.

Instead of knitting on them today, I'll blog about my progress. The boys love seeing the pictures of the things in the house on the computer. The pattern is from Sirdar's booklet "Things to Make" and they're called "Bendy Animals" because they're supposed to be kinda posable.

They call for you to put those little bendy hair rollers in the body so the limbs don't just hang down. Isn't that a neat idea??!! I'm not sure I'll be doing that, but the tiger's still cool. S thought it was so cool that upon seeing the picture, he instantly wanted me to make it. "I want that. Just like that. Exactly like that." And B didn't want his animal to be any less cool, so we're adapting the tiger to be a lion for him (ie - yellow body, no stripes and a bigger mane).

And here's my progress so far. Many little pieces. Ugh! What I actually have here is just the legs and the bottom soles of the feet. (Yes, I specified "sole" of the foot. There is also a shoe upper that I haven't knitted yet!)

Oh man, these are going to be a nightmare to sew up. Luckily, I don't have to think about that again for another couple of weeks!

Arrrgh! Whatever possessed you? Lucky for me, I am allergic to sewing up, so I am excused from such projects.

Ha! Allergic, good one!

They're cute, but I'd be way too tempted to knit them as one long piece and just get creative with the shaping.

Ooooh, if you can figure that out Jes, you're way cleverer than me!

Posted by: ALISON at August 20, 2007 10:55 AM

I would sew as you go, take the pain out of it at the end!

I'd be willing to bet a sewing pattern was used in the creation of this pattern with all those seperate pieces. So cute though! I think it's great you're making these for your boys.

I can;t wait to see what they look like when they are done! They are just too cute!

And I have been inveigled into knitting two (TWO!) Hedwigs in memory of poor Hedwig for my grown daughters who saw the owl pattern in your book. But it's sweet that they still want Mum to make them something. Molly Weasley at the ready! Wasn't she superb in the final book?

Just shows how great your mother love is - I'm not sure I could bring myself to knit something with so many small parts to be sewn up & connected. I have a booklet of patterns for knitted Thomas the Tank Engine toys but it's just been admired (by me) so far. MY grandsons are Thomas maniacs so I may knit some for Christmas (right now we're concerned about lead poisoning & I have vowed not to buy any more Thomas toys).

They are just too cute. got to keep my 21 year old step-son away from the picture. He was born in the Year of the tiger and has this tiger fetish. All things tiger. My teds are not too happy about the fact that the tigers are gaining on them and my husband thinks I should practice population control. The church craft fair is coming and then there will be a thinning of the herd and a lot of happy little kids. Keep the guys happy. Koalas Rule.

You could convert the arm to working in the round like glove fingers. I did that with a monkey from Fiona McTeagues knitted toys book. It made the putting together much easier. They are cute.
Peace and Yarn,
Annie

Lions and Tigers in Pieces -- Oh My!

Posted by: Cathy-Cate at August 20, 2007 2:49 PM

I love doing stuffed things--just enough knitting and just complicated enough to keep it interesting. I had to do bottom of feet for a bunny I knit. Patience--that's all I can offer. It's in my Ravelry notebook. JenW

Those are some cool cats. Absolutely adorable. I want some!

Hee! It looks like a miniature Hobbes from the comic. Way cute, I can see why the boys liked him so much- my 27 year old husband just decided he needed one seeing that picture!

You're right, Kelly! I knew the tiger looked familiar. It's Hobbes! :D

A nightmare, but very cute!

Ahhh...I have a tiger lover in my home but I couldn't find the booklet on google...oh well. Good luck with weaving the ends in.

Alison,
I just found the blue thing one and thing two hats that you made for the Halloween costumes. I have no idea how to use this site, but I would like to know if you make these types of hats to sell? Please contact me with any information at regency2@comcast.net.
Thanks for your help, Angie

Depending on the size pipe cleaners might also work as bendy skeleton.
