itsty bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dots for baby

Wee one's blue polka dots dress is done and ooh, is sewing these little dresses ever addictive!

No pics yet of wee one in her new dress since she's sleeping right now and it's about 65 degrees today in Boston. (We get wee one's summer clothes back, I sew her two new dresses and suddenly it's fall here!)

But the sewing will go on. We've just packed up wee one's baby basinette and put my sewing table in its place. I've got a new little stash of pretty, girly fabrics and an awesome new book full of fun projects that I can actually make!

Have you seen Amy Karol's new book, Bend-the-Rules Sewing? It is so cool!

The projects are simple but beautiful and super cute. There's this little apron pinafore and this little baby jacket, which I'll definitely be making. And then a ton of other sweet little projects for me to make like pillows and purses and the instructions are so clear. There's even a simple quilt pattern perfect for a beginner like me who has no idea what she's doing. It's just the sewing book I'd been looking for - love it!

Hubby is worried. Heh, heh.

I love her website and the book! One of the women in our knitting group made the Simple Tote last week. I'm planning to make several to put this years holidays gifts in. I have a lot of vintage tea towels and am making some aprons with them using her patterns.

The new little dress is so cute!
I got that book too & sewed myself the quilt (I expanded it to Queen size). It's indefinitely an uber easy quilt. I'm planning on sewing tons from that book in the future.

I think that wee one must have the cutest wardrobe in Boston. That little dress is adorable! It's almost enough to make me reconsider my "no kids for me" stance. Maybe I can convince my brothers to settle down and start families - I could be the aunt that makes clothes!

Very cute! That pattern would work as a viking apron dress as well ;-)

Alison, you'll want to check out her flickr page (link on her website) if you move onto other projects... I have made the wallet and "charming handbag' and there are crutial steps and measurements left out of the intstructions, very frustrating when you want to get the project done.

I have read discussions that the editor really mangled important info...

What a cute little dress!
What kind of sewing machine do you have? I've been ogling with learning to sew for quite a while now, but I don't know anything about sewing machines.

adorable dress. i mirror dorothee's comments exactly. i'm considering getting a sewing machine but i would literally not even know how to turn it on, let alone which one to buy. do you have any suggestions for other beginner books/tips (like what to buy/how to learn)?

Cute, cute, cute. Her AngryChicken blog had a list several days ago of adorable crafty things to make for/with little girls, especially if one wants to avoid the current Made in China dangers. Our Hedwigs continue slowly.

Oooh, I'd read about that book and meant to add it to my Amazon wish list so I'd remember. I can't wait to browse through yours! ;-)

Awwwww...that's just the cutest dress! And I bet she can wear that as a top next summer if it doesn't get much wear at the moment.

I'm waiting for a copy of that book from the library - looks really interesting.

LOVE IT! that dress is sooooo cute! and I love how the pants are lined with that bright yellow! :D

How cute! I just got that book and I LOVE it!!! Can't wait to see some more sewing FO's for wee one!

LOVE that outfit for wee one! I just got the same book and already sewed the artsy clutch - my first sewing project since junior high school! The projects are great and the instructions are really easy to follow.
I read your blog as a fellow knitter, but now also as a sewer (I just realized that is the same spelling as sewer as in the drainage system) :)

Sixty-five degrees? We are jealous in Texas! The dress is ultra darling.

Posted by: Katherine at August 23, 2007 4:19 PM

So how did you decide to address the curved hem problem?? I want to look so darling in that little outfit!! :)

Posted by: Laura at August 23, 2007 5:41 PM

I see what you mean about the cutie patootie panties.

I'd like to know about the hem, too.

have this book and love it!!

Cute stuff! And I love a polka dot!! And a little sassy contrast color for facings, too darn cute...

Posted by: Sarah at August 23, 2007 9:05 PM

Love the dress. Where did the pattern come from again? And yes, I too would like to know how you handled the curved hem. Tell us!!! pretty please???

And more importantly, where and WHEN do you find the time to be so darn crafty?

The dress is adorable!

The weekend in Boston is supposed to be HOT, so I think wee one will get some more use out of her summer clothes. :)

Posted by: Dorothy at August 24, 2007 6:30 AM

Ugh, the hem is still a nightmare. I tried sewing down a 1/4" edge and then clipping into that when making the actual hem, but the clipping into the neat turned edge looks just as ugly as I thought it would. So this dress has a flatter but even uglier inside hem than the pink one. Luckily, this doesn't show at all on the front. Unluckily, baby girl likes to pick up the edge and suck on it, showing everyone the ugly hem job!

I'll try something different on the next one. Eventually I'll get it right.

Those bloomers are killing me - that dress is the cutest!

Posted by: Donna at August 25, 2007 6:40 PM

What about sewing two together to make them reversible?

Then the hem is a seam not a hem. When she chews on the bottom you just see the reverse side. Gee, do you think maybe she's teething?

Just a thought.

Posted by: Anita at August 26, 2007 1:52 AM

Totally want to do that next time, Anita. It's a great way of avoiding the problem, you're right! I considered it for these first two dresses but my two fabrics really didn't coordinate that well and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to sew them right at all. Now that I'm feeling confident about everything but that crappy hem, I'll just do one reversible dress and avoid the whole hem problem. Brilliant!! :)
