some stupid sewing

Don't worry that only wee one is benefiting from my recent sewing activities. Now that the machine is out again and I've remembered how to use it, I thought it was only right that I dig out those Stupid Sock Creatures I promised to make for the boys last Christmas. I'd already cut out all the pieces but I had to reread all the sewing instructions before I could get going.

Once I started sewing though, it was really quick and simple. Perfect for a novice seamstress like myself! The only hairy part was when I was attaching the little arms. No hand-sewing for me, Mr. Sock Creature man. I did it all on the machine and the tiny circumference of the armholes was a tad difficult. Still, I had S's sock monster all sewn together in about an hour.

Now to stuff him and give him a face. This is the coolest part! S wants three eyes, buck teeth and a sticky-outy tongue. And then there's the neat trick of making the lips out of the heel of the sock. I'm totally having fun with this!

(Hey, has anyone made Jordan or one of the creatures from the book with round ears? B's Jordan monster is up next and I don't understand the instructions for the ear. Help!)

Hi! So funny - I just posted my pics of sock creatures we made last year. Here's the link:

Stupid Sock Creatures

Sorry, no advice on the rounded ears.

Wow, Heather, yours are great! You must have had much cooler socks lying around than we did. (That's what I get for being a boring sock person!!)

I really need to learn to sew. There are so many things I want to make!

So I'm sorry, but someone's gotta say it. His two arms are wicked suggestive...... I already said I'm sorry!

I was going to comment that his little arms are rather, uh, suggestive, but I thought better of my impulse, so I'm not going to say it.....

So cute! And handsewing is no big deal - it's the same as finishing up a sweater, only with thread instead of yarn. Kind of fun to curl up in front of the TV and do for a spell.

I haven't made Jordan specifically, but from experience with the rest of his instructions I can say that instead of trying to understand them all at once, just do each step and it will come clear in the fullness of time. Or not. (I am so very helpful yes?) Either way you will come up with some kind of ear-like appendage...stick whatever you come up with on the sides of the head and it will totally work. These are stupid sock creatures! Anything goes!

That is just soooooo adorable. A hint I remember from when I used to sew like crazy - the easiest way to turn a tube with a small circumference like those arms is to use a straight knitting needle - the knob on the end is usually just the right size to push the closed end out. And, when it's right side out, you can use the pointy end (a larger size like a 10 or 10 works best) to get the end just the way you want it.

That's one cool Mr sock creature man!
I know what I'm putting in my kids christmas stockings this year ;) ( of course my kids are 21 and 15.)

Oh he's a cutie! And I didn't see the suggestive arms- maybe you could stitch some finger lines on them or something, because I sure do see it now!

Oh people, the arms are nothing compared to the fully stuffed ears!! Just wait! :-D

Those are cute! I bet my kids would like those.

I don't have any advice. I just love this book (got it for a friend a year or so ago), and am happy to see someone making some!

Maybe I should do that with my socks of the death and dying variety.

I love that Stupid Sock Book. I just had to have it. Too bad most of our socks are white. :-(

Your socks are cool!
