Working with this denim yarn is soooo weird. Everything seems "enormous and a half" (to quote my boys) when knitting and it's really hard to imagine that it could ever shrink down enough to be normal-sized. But it does. Take the denim hat I knit for a friend's little boy this vacation.
I knit the 2 yr. size. Can you believe that the pattern called for 9" before starting the crown decreases? It's as long as wee one's whole body!
It's much snugger now. It even fits on wee one's head, although I did turn up the bottom edge twice to get it to actually sit on the top of her head. For a larger baby, I think it'll be great! With the ribbing and the extra length, he should be able to wear it for a long time.
And now my next adventure in shrinkage, wee one's white denim pinafore. The front is all done.
I've sized down the pattern to be about a one year size, but before washing it looks like a blanket next to a 5 month old wee one!
With some washing, it should fit her next summer. Cross your fingers, wee one!

If only there were a yarn that worked the other way, so it would fit her now and then stretch to fit her next summer.
I love the denim! It is amazing how crazy it looks prior to the washing, but boy do items in that yarn last!
The hat is to cute (may have to copy that one) and I can't wait to see how the dress turns out.
Michelle, the denim hat is from Itty-Bitty Hats. It's the inside of the white dotted denim hat pictured in the book. It's fun to make and looks great! There are more pics in this post.
LOVE IT! that wee-one is so darn cute!!! I'm glad you got all her cute clothes back by the way - just catching up on blog reading lately ;)
I really should try something in denim - especially if it really lasts a long time. It would be such a shame if something you spent so long making wore out too soon :)
Have fun with the pinafore! :)
Have you found the shrinkage to be consistent with the yarn? I mean, does it always shrink the same amount or does it depend on the stitch pattern etc? I've really been eager to try it for my son, but am nervous about the shrinkage!
The hat is very cute, especially on your cute baby.
I've knitted one denim dress for my girl (the Polly Pocket Dress from Miss Bea's Seaside) and it is one of her and my favorite dresses. She loves the pockets and I like that it's machine washable.
enormous and a half, i may have to steal that... if your boys don't mind. :)
I did a huge sweater for myself in that yarn years ago, and afterwards I thought, 'Why did I do that?' because it was so much work, but I've just bought some of the yarn to do that little dress for my niece's daughter and I'm going to do a hat too. At least with a small garment it won't be so much extra work, and it does look great when it's done. I'm planning to use the darkest indigo, but you've got me thinking about the ecru as well.
And she's probably thinking: "Cool a new fancy blankie"
Have I ever said how cute she is? Would you like to hear it again?
Is her hair changing colour?
That dress looks adorable! And I really like the yarn you used for the hat.
The extra knitting is truly worth the effort.
awww...i'll have to get my knitting excitement back again and make my very own wee one [19 wks+5 along] something like that...and your wee one is just so darn cute!!!
Everything is so stinkin' cute! I had no idea that denim yarn shrinks. (Although, my jeans shrink, so it makes sense.) Does the label on the yarn tell you this information, or do you have to remember it when you start knitting?
Dorothy, the yarn label gives you the gauge pre-washing and post-washing. The change is really in the row gauge and is pretty dramatic. All the patterns written for the denim are written to be longer to make up for the expected amount of shrinkage.
Rachel, I haven't really measured things to see if the shrinkage is always the same percentage, but everything I've knit with the denim has turned out to be in the right size range. But I've only knitted baby items so far. As Helen says, knitting and adult garment would be quite different, since there's a lot more knitting to do to make up for the shrinkage and if it doesn't shrink as much as it should, it will have a big effect on fit. Still, I never heard anyone complain about the fit of things they've made with the denim. I've only ever heard raves!
I made the pinafore for Bean when she was around 2 and I knit and knit and knit and knit. And then it shrank and shrank and was fabulous!!! It's too small now, but I loved it over a stripey shirt.
