happy leif erikson day!

And here to celebrate Leif Erikson Day....

we have intrepid living room explorer, baby L, discovering new worlds (like the camera case),

and looking super cute in her new baby brunhilde hat.

The hat was really fun to make, the details like the bobbles, wings and braids are very well explained in the pattern and the final result is just adorable. I made wee one's hat extra big so she can wear it all winter long and next year too. My favorite part was doing the braids. As I was braiding the i-cords, I thought, this is the first time I've fixed my daughter's hair. Awwww. (Yes, I've made her hair before, but that was just one big hair helmet - this time I got to actually give her a hair-do.)

Now I hear that the real Vikings didn't actually have wings or horns on their helmets and even I'll admit that the blond braids are really more Helga the Horrible and Monty Python Spam than anything genuinely Viking-y. But I can't help myself, I love it!

She is the cutest, pudgiest little viking I've ever seen. I just want to love all over her little cheeks! Careful, though, she's so cute in here new hat strangers (other than myself) may also want to love on her.

Cute hat; cuter baby!!

Posted by: Bonney at October 9, 2007 10:36 AM

Very cute!

Posted by: Leslie at October 9, 2007 10:39 AM

What a cabbage patch kid face! Makes me want to make one for my (very distant) future child!

Posted by: Red at October 9, 2007 10:39 AM

That is possibly the cutest baby hat I've ever seen.

Posted by: Bethe at October 9, 2007 10:39 AM

That is utterly fabulous. L makes a wonderful Viking, especially with those blue eyes!

Posted by: Alexis at October 9, 2007 10:45 AM

gahhh! so. cute!

Posted by: marri at October 9, 2007 10:46 AM

Baby L would make Siegfried's heart go pitter-patter!

Posted by: Katherine at October 9, 2007 10:47 AM

That last picture is priceless -- it is about the cutest ever!

Posted by: anmiryam at October 9, 2007 10:49 AM

What a cutie! That last one looks like my daughters Cabbage Patch doll!
I wonder if they make this pattern for grown-ups...

Posted by: nikkapotamus at October 9, 2007 10:51 AM

It was easy to size up. Just get the pattern and cast on a larger multiple. I cast on 8 more stitches for wee one's hat and it juuust squeezes on my head - another 8 or 16 more and it would fit me great. You meed more yarn though! And there's no need to change the wings or the braids at all. Too fun!!

Posted by: ALISON at October 9, 2007 10:54 AM

I can't handle how cute this is! Monty Python Vikings are my personal favorites!

Posted by: Lindsey at October 9, 2007 11:00 AM

Aaaww, too cute for words!! Baby L can come join our viking group any time. And those braids... omg!!

Posted by: Helene at October 9, 2007 11:01 AM

She is too cute!! She makes a great model. Wonder if my boys would wear braids!? Nah!

Posted by: Suzanne V. (Yarnhog) at October 9, 2007 11:05 AM

SO CUTE! LOVE, Love, love the braids - and just in the right shade of Barbie yellow (or was it just me that colored her hair that color?)

Posted by: Deana at October 9, 2007 11:05 AM

Awww! She looks so cute! (And if you want to email me one or two of the photos, I'd love to add them to the Bella customer gallery!)

Posted by: Sarah at October 9, 2007 11:09 AM

She is sooooo cute! Those round cheeks and big blue eyes. What a sweet Viking girl!

Posted by: Liz B. at October 9, 2007 11:10 AM

So amazingly awesomely cute! I can't believe how different it makes her look. Like a cabbage patch kid or a little girl, or something totally different from the baby L we know and love!

It's great!

Posted by: Johanna at October 9, 2007 11:15 AM

That's maybe the cutest thing I've ever seen! She looks like a little cabbage patch kid in the last photo with the braids, absolutely adorable!

Posted by: Adrienne at October 9, 2007 11:16 AM

so super cute! question: does she pull on the braids at all? are they attached in such a way that they would stand up to a baby who does tend to pull on cords, etc?

Posted by: Meg at October 9, 2007 11:19 AM

Oh my gosh, cuteness just oozes out of her! I can't want to see you both in the pictures! ;)

Posted by: Sandy at October 9, 2007 11:19 AM

Posted by: Amie at October 9, 2007 11:32 AM

that is a cute hat. i studied viking archaeology in grad school, so the horned helmet is a always a sore point (along with dinosaur questions). thanks for including those links - i appreciated them! i think my favorite part of the hat is the i-cord braids....

Posted by: the boogeyman's wife at October 9, 2007 11:47 AM

Love the baby viking! She's ready for the opera. Just wondering, does she have Brunhilde-strength pipes? She always looks so cute and well-behaved!

Posted by: Ina at October 9, 2007 12:08 PM

she is absolutely adorable! and so is the hat.

Posted by: marti at October 9, 2007 12:25 PM

Fan-freaking-tastic! That is about the cutest thing I've ever seen. I feel woozy from all that cute!

Posted by: Ande at October 9, 2007 1:04 PM

Well. That is pretty darn cute. The span of time when your daughter(s) "let" you fix their hairdos, welcome it in fact, can be short. so enjoy! Does Wee One have actual hair on her actual head yet?

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at October 9, 2007 1:13 PM

Cute overload! Those little braids are too much. SO sweet!

Posted by: kelly at October 9, 2007 1:29 PM

Squeeeeee! So cute! My husband even likes it - and wasn't scared when I told him that I want to make one when we have children, too. Great job on this cute and fun project!

That is just the end. There's a baby due in our family at the end of October and I am so-o-o-o-o hoping it's a girl so that I can knit one of these.

Posted by: Helen at October 9, 2007 2:26 PM

Those cheeks! So cute...and perfect for a viking.

Posted by: Christy at October 9, 2007 2:27 PM

Holy crap! That is the cutest thing yet and you've posted some darned cute photos of that adorable baby on your site before. I'm agog at her cuteness. I show all my friends your blog so they too can bask in the cuteness of your child. Awesome hat!!

Posted by: Erika at October 9, 2007 4:30 PM

That has got to be one of the most adorable pictures I've seen in quite some time. Not surprising. The equation of cute baby + nifty hat = amazingly cute baby.

Posted by: Seanna Lea at October 9, 2007 5:13 PM

ACK! So much cuteness in one blog post! Seriously, that is one of the coolest projects!

Posted by: sara at October 9, 2007 5:18 PM

I laughed out loud, too.

That hat brings out the colour of her eyes.

Is it possible this hat is cuter than the blonde hair wig?!

I'd love to see a mother/daughter pic(s) with matching viking hats.

It's getting harder and harder to pick favourite pics of L. This one's right up there.

Posted by: Anita at October 9, 2007 6:38 PM

The picture of your daughter is absolutely priceless. I just love it. The hat and braids are just too cute.

Posted by: Linda at October 9, 2007 10:03 PM

If the real Vikings were that cute, they'd be ruling the world today.

Posted by: amy at October 9, 2007 10:04 PM

Oh heavens, one should seriously put a warning in your bloglines feed that Severe Cuteness Awaits! Those eyes, those cheeks! (The knitting's adorable too, but the combination of all three is astounding!!!)

Posted by: PlazaJen at October 9, 2007 10:36 PM

wee one is just too adorable and you are one fun momma to have!

Posted by: debbie at October 9, 2007 11:53 PM

That is the cutest thing I have seen all day!

Posted by: Sarah at October 10, 2007 2:41 AM

I love the hat. Love it, love it, love it. Though it's more of an Asterix/Obelix type hat than a Viking hat, isn't it?

Posted by: Kristin at October 10, 2007 4:10 AM

This is by far one of the cutest babies I've seen!

Posted by: Mai at October 10, 2007 5:37 AM
