if at first you don't succeed, try guy again

Attempt number four for the Flower Toggle hat from Lucinda Guy's Handknits for Kids. After three other attempts at getting the size right (the pattern has the sizes WAAAY too small), I think we've finally got it right (80 stitches for my almost 2 yr old). Luckily, the Debbie Bliss pure cashmere is holding up to the repeated ripping and reknitting. And each time I say 'this is the last time!', sure that I'll give up if it doesn't work, I start knitting and find the pattern so charming and sweet that I remember why I wanted to make it in the first place. There's no denying it: that Lucinda Guy makes cool stuff.

I tried that hat too. It's sizing was clearly way off--of course I didn't figure that out until I had knit a significant amount. It's amazing how your brain starts to tell you at that moment, "Oh, it'll be fine. It'll work out" and then reality sets in and you have to start over. I am glad I did--it is such a cute hat, but how in the world did she figure her sizing.....

I haven't tried that pattern but that yarn is a treat. I could almost rip it just for the pleasure of knitting it up again.

hey alison!

had the same problem as you.....knitting the flower toggle hat with way to few stitches. so I emailed lucinda guy about the problem and she wrote me back that apparently in the first edition of this book the number of stitches are for a half hat.....only this pattern.
so double up and you will get the right amount of stitches for thecute flower toggle hat.

take care, malle

Thanks, Malle, that makes perfect sense! Looks like I'm a few stitches short of the proper number, but I know this version does fit wee one, so it should be okay.
