bound and determined

don't you love the hair clippie things that hold the binding in place?

I'm determined to get these two quilts (the neutral quilt and the purple-lovers quilt) done by the end of the month! The neutral quilt merely needs to have a binding attached, and when I say merely attach the binding, I mean that about 250 inches of binding need to be sewn down by hand. To that end, I flouted all the rules of knitting group and brought the quilt with me to work on at Knitsmiths! Thanks to my work there and in the last two nights, I'm just a corner away from being done. It will be the first large quilt project I've seen straight through to the end. I can't wait!

Yeah! Who says you have to knit at knitting group? There's been crocheting, cross stitching, other sewing, and (gasp!) just socializing there in the past! Keep on truckin' on those quilts, February is a short month!

Great job! I have to admit - I gave up hand sewing that binding down years ago. I machine sew the binding to the back first, and then wrap the fold to the front and machine stitch it down. I usually add an extra 1/8 to 1/4" to the binding width, to ensure that when I bring it to the front there will be enough to cover the seam. I figure if the quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted, then what's wrong with machine sewing the binding to the front? And most people don't quilt and wouldn't know the difference anyway. If I were to make an heirloom, I'd consider hand sewing the binding, but right now, I'm making things I hope are being used, loved, and washed by machine, and I think the machine sewing holds up a bit better in the long run. Congrats on your new hobby - you're doing great - and it is very addicting. Wait until your scrap bin overflows.....there's more scrappy quilts in your future!

Very nice. I slightly prefer hand sewing to machine sewing, but I haven't figured out what I need to do to rebind the quilt my mom made for me ages ago. It's all frayed on the edges and truly needs some love.
