summer fixation

I am completely mad for ankle socks! Here's my latest pair, started at the playground, continued on the subway in NYC, then at the emergency room and finally finished while resting my foot on the sofa.

It's my own ankle sock pattern again. With the Fixation yarn though, I used US5's and cast on 48 stitches. And the best part: it took only one ball! After finishing the socks, I had this much left.

This was my first time using Fixation. It's really neat - so soft and stretchy. I ended up keeping the tension pretty tight, stretching the yarn a bit while knitting, so that the socks stay nice and snug. Cause who wants saggy ankle socks? Now I can't wait to start the next pair with the white Fixation that I picked up in NYC. I got two balls, since I wasn't sure how much yarn one pair of anklets would take, so that means that I should get two pairs out of the yarn!

You can never have too many pairs of ankle socks, right? (Please say right, otherwise, I'm gonna need an intervention or something.)

ha! i finished a pair of ankle socks myself last night. They're so quick and fun, and I love ankle socks! :) You can never have enough pairs of ankle socks!

Oh....I have a nice ball of Fixation waiting in the wings...as soon as I finish the little poncho...I am casting on Alison's Anklets!

Your socks are wonderful!

Um. Emergency Room? Did I miss something? (Fab socks, though!)

Posted by: Deb at July 6, 2005 10:43 AM

*I* can certainly never have enough ankle socks, though I also feel that things aren't quite right unless they have pompoms on the backs of the cuffs.

Of course you can never have too many ankle socks. Two good reasons - having many pairs make it so that you have to do laundry less often and because other socks look silly with sneakers in the summer.

Right. :-)

great socks!

your fellow in ankle sock addiction.

Those are awesome, and I was just thinking of using the left over ball of Fixation I had from the other socks I'm making to make a pair of anklets!

Posted by: MA at July 6, 2005 11:10 AM

I join you in your addiction. Can't get enough of the ankle socks. One question though: I love the pgr method for the heels, but when I do the toes, I end up with little points on each end of the graft. I really do like how the pgr looks on the toes otherwise, but I've gone back to a standard toe just to avoid those evil points.

any hints on how i can avoid the pointy things and still have the lovely grafted pgr toes?

Of course you can't have too many! They're so cute, and with one ball of fixation... That's like $5.

I'm falling in love with ankle socks, have a pair or two in the line up, but what do you expect for the most recent of sock obessed knitters? After I finish my second peek-a-boo sock I'm moving on to your ankle socks.

Posted by: Katherine at July 6, 2005 11:59 AM

Those are very cute and I don't think you can have too many ankle socks, just like you can't have too many scarves, bags or shoes.

I've got a couple of balls of calmer laying around, do you think it would work for the anklets? It seems like the perfect way to use it up. And get cute socks.

Talk about instant gratification...and your foot doesn't look swollen!

Posted by: Leslie at July 6, 2005 12:12 PM

These socks are superb--you can never have too many. I've seen a few people refer to them here and there, and I'm right on the brink of making a pair myself. Thanks for sharing the pattern!

Very cute, but let's see how big is your foot. I wonder if I could get one pair out of one ball of Fixation. I have 3 balls in my stash.

Posted by: Rebekah at July 6, 2005 12:45 PM

Ooh, these are great! I've got half a ball of fixation leftover from Knit Wit's ice cream pint cozy....baby socks?

Posted by: Carrie at July 6, 2005 1:02 PM

Yes, you're right, one can never have too many ankle socks...knit on :)

Posted by: michele at July 6, 2005 1:07 PM

Hey Alison,

Is it ever possible to knit too much of anything? :) I've never knitted socks before, but am going to try soon... well once my wrist heals. I want to try your ankle sock pattern, but with Calmer, is that a good selection?

I am looking forward to trying your pattern for ankle socks, as both my daughters wear them. And it's great to know that only 1 skein of Fixation will do the jog!

i finished my first pair of fixation ankles at walt disney world last week - my brother told his kids (they are teens) that auntie is a krack-head...knitting in florida heat

Posted by: sharon at July 6, 2005 2:08 PM

I will definitely have to try your sock pattern. Thanks for posting it! I love me some ankle socks.

Posted by: Sarah at July 6, 2005 2:14 PM

I can't wait to use your ankle socks pattern! Thanks for the tip about how it went with your Fixation. Great idea--I've got some in stash that I've been itching to try out. Again, thanks for sharing your pattern so the rest of us can get addicted to it! =)

I seem to remember not so long ago when socks were the enemy.

Just sayin'.

OMG no way. I have 2 balls of fixation just hanging around...this will be perfect...! what fun what fun!! hope your foot is healing nicely ;)

Posted by: tania at July 6, 2005 4:53 PM

Um, excuse me....what did you do to your foot? Is it hurt? Or was it one of the boys???

Oh people, Calmer would be faaaaaabulous. I have one or two balls tucked away in my sock yarn basket ready to try out. The Calmer pattern book actually has a sock pattern in it, so the idea isn't totally crazy or anything. The yarn is a bit thicker than the Koigu or even Fixation, so they might end up being kinda warm though. Please let me know if anyone does make them - I'd love to hear how you like them!

For my foot issues, see my NYC post from Monday. The swelling has really gone down, but the bruise is still very sensitive. The only shoes I can wear are my Mary Janes that leave the top of my foot uncovered.

I know, I know, Claudia. Still, I'm not a calf-length sock on US1's kinda sock knitter, you know what I mean? I have yet to work up the motivation to tackle the few skeins of Shepherd Sock I have in the stash. I like knitting sport weight socks. I like knitting tiny little ankle socks that take half the time and are so freaking cute, I can't stand it! I think this makes me sort of a sock knitting poser actually. Kinda like a celebrity who says she loves to knit, but only makes garter stitch scarves or something. I still don't feel really legit.

Posted by: alison at July 6, 2005 7:41 PM

I agree you can never have to many socks. Now I have not started trying to knit myself some but am glad to see someones work. I am new to knitting and socks scare me right now. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more on your blog.

I bought some fixation for socks for our piano teacher. She is too sensitive to wear wool. Now I'm concerned that they are contraindicated by her latex allergy? Can anyone help me with this question? I don't want to ruin the surprise by asking her outright. Thanks

Posted by: Angie at July 6, 2005 10:10 PM

i'm not going to argue, my sock pal wants ankle socks, and i'm gonna use your pattern! now, to decide waht fiber and color. hmmmmm. not due til september, right?

Posted by: minnie at July 6, 2005 11:42 PM

I'm glad I found your blog and that pattern. I remember in high school, way back in the early 80's we couldn't ever have enough ankle socks. Wore them with Nike sneakers and knee highs in the winter.

Your ankle socks are really sweet!!!

I've been knitting for a handful of years now and have never even been tempted to knit socks, never saw the point... until now, your ankle socks with the little pom pom have tempted me. I may be giving them a try soon.

Thanks so much for sharing your pattern!

Just wanted to say 'Thank you!' for posting the ankle sock pattern and especially the PG-R shortrow technique! I've read about it but it all seemed very complicated. Last night I tried again using your pictorial tutorial, and it worked! This technique did produce the best-looking shortrow heel I've ever knit. I see many more shortrow socks in my future! Thanks again!

I love those socks! Those are so perfect for summer... not like the Trekking socks I am currently knitting! Can't wait to see more :)

Posted by: Dani at July 7, 2005 9:54 AM

I am so so so making those socks. :D I love cascade fixation, and love ankle socks. therefore, I love you.
