the postman always brings sock yarn

I finally received a package yesterday of sock yarn I'd ordered in March after my return from Germany. Yes, more Regia Canadian Colors and Classic Canadian Colors. I decided to buy some of the colorways I hadn't seen in stores on my trip. I now officially have too much sock yarn. I almost got some more Koigu at the store yesterday. Lucky for me I put it back, because...

The next package I got was a box stuffed with color-your-own fingering weight yarn from Knitpicks! And that was followed up by a starter dye kit from the nice folks at ProChemical. Instead of buying more sock yarn, I can now focus on getting pots and gloves and saran wrap and everything I need for the dye swap. Who's dyeing this weekend??

I'm dyeing this weekend, at a class in Neenah, WI, as part of the Midwest Masters. :) Have fun!

Those Canadian Colors are nice.

I LOVE that red-orange color! Can't. stop. staring at it.

Posted by: Jenna at April 27, 2006 10:25 AM

That dyeing kit looks like fun!

Posted by: dee at April 27, 2006 10:32 AM

Wait, there's such a thing as too much sock yarn?

I'm still trying to decide if I should spin my own, and if so, should I dye it before or after?

Posted by: Lucia at April 27, 2006 10:42 AM

Okay... Now you have to teach us all to read German so we can order from that site! lol What fun colors and (I think) great prices. Isn't 6 euro about $7.50? Is shipping expensive? Now I'm on a hunt for a German speaking friend!

Posted by: Tammy at April 27, 2006 10:43 AM

Do you order from Germany? I've had problems finding an online seller that will take a credit card instead of a "Banküberweisung." Who do you order from??

Posted by: Dragonfly Judy at April 27, 2006 10:53 AM

Oh I love the orange! (I just love really loud sock yarn- the louder the better.) Did you see that Webs has some Regia yarns on sale for like $6??? I just love me a good deal on sock yarn!

Posted by: Angel at April 27, 2006 10:54 AM

I agree with everybody, I love the orange yarn. Do you actually order from this German company and will they accept MC or VISA? Also on the hunt for a german friend. May have to get my Aunt Helga to come to my office after work.....LOL. Love your blog and can't wait for the next sock exchange. Dee

That orange Regia is calling to me like a big old siren parked on a rock in the middle of the ocean. It's really, really cool. Please knit that first :-)

Posted by: Beth S. at April 27, 2006 11:12 AM

I do order direct from the German websites, but I use our German bank account and have everything sent to my in-laws who send it on to me. Sorry I can't be of more help but to recommend having German relatives or contacts! ;0)

How much is too much sock yarn ;-)))? Take a picture about your stash and show us, please...
Many Greetings, Jana

weeee! have fun!!!

Posted by: pippi at April 27, 2006 12:14 PM

Ooooh! One Shot is addictive. I started with one of those starter packs and now I have like 8-9 colors. I mean you need the basics, yellow, blue, magenta, then a true red (tomato), a black (raven), then a really nice purple (iris), oooh and they have a great green (kiwi). Then they came out with new colors so I tried out Mountain Aqua and Key Lime. They are all sooo pretty and their black is actually a black black that dyes really dark when mixed with the medium instructions. Have fun dyeing!

Funny you should mention it... I am dyeing this weekend! I've also got the Knitpicks dye your own wool in the sock weight, but I'm using Easter egg dyes. I've not dyed enough to know what the heck I'm doing, but at $.50 per pack of Easter egg colors, I didn't have to make too much of an investment for some serious fun. I'm thinking blue....

Posted by: Joan at April 27, 2006 1:22 PM

So - will your in-laws ship to us, too? Because, like everyone else, I want the orange yarn!

Posted by: janna at April 27, 2006 1:45 PM

Hmmmm Alison... sounds like a business opportunity to me. You could become a German sock yarn distributer!

We have out wallets out!

Posted by: Tammy at April 27, 2006 3:36 PM

oh i'm sooo jealous! i love sock yarn! i have so much... i need to learn to knit it more but it looks so pretty laying there in my basket....ahhh

Posted by: allena at April 27, 2006 3:39 PM

we should have a yarn dyeing party. too bad knitsmiths is at a bookstore.

Posted by: reesie at April 27, 2006 3:42 PM

My daughter and I are having a kool-aid dye party tonight. This is my practice run for the project spectrum yarn swap. I have another skein for Dye-o -rama for this weekend. Good luck with the pro dye's.

Love all the Regia colors.. question is, what in the hell were they thinking when they decided to call them all "Canadian colors?!" I'm confused.. help explain! Oh, and let me know if you want me to come over and dye :)

Posted by: Dani at April 27, 2006 3:52 PM

I'm tempted to order some of that Regia sock yarn without knowing a lick of German, just 'cuz it's so nice and you apparently didn't have any problems with the international ordering/shipping. I'm loving the very first color displayed on that first website. But perhaps I'll check out my options on ebay first.

Posted by: Mary at April 27, 2006 4:20 PM

Oh, okay -- I just read your comment about ordering with your German bank account and shipping to your in-laws. I guess I'll try ebay first.

You could make a killing by selling Regia on ebay using your Germany connections....

Posted by: Mary at April 27, 2006 4:23 PM

Oh you're gonna have so much fun with the ProChem dyes. I use those dyes all the time with great success.

Posted by: Rose at April 27, 2006 5:15 PM

No idea how much the first company charges for shipping to the US. The website says to contact them first to ask. There is some language on the site about being able to pay with PayPal though.

if ONLY the postman always brought sock yarn. Mine has not been giving me such special treatment. Maybe i need to start putting out cookies.

Posted by: shireen at April 27, 2006 5:34 PM

Nice Regia!

Posted by: Peeve at April 27, 2006 7:06 PM

You can never have enough sock yarn! I just learned how to knit socks, literally, this week, and I have already started stock piling sock yarn. I now have a list of at least 10 different sock patterns I want to try.

Posted by: silverarrowknits at April 27, 2006 7:19 PM

Heeeeheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Watch out.....that's how I started too!

Posted by: Scout at April 27, 2006 9:28 PM

i dyed last weekend, lol. i did it the suntea way, as i didn't have time for much else. and it's suppsoed to rain all weekend, so no dyeing fun :(

Posted by: minnie at April 27, 2006 10:56 PM

Oooh, you've got some "Kilt"!

I love that colourway, i've got some sat in my sock yarn box downstairs and i'm just itching to knit it up! I love the colours, so autumny and subdued, and yet they look so nice together.

Regia do such nice yarns, I ordered mine from this very nice lady: http://www.bastelundhobbykiste.de/
It was very reasonable, and shipping wasn't too bad either (but then, I live in the uk).

I love your blog - I check it every day, you are such an inspirational knitter.

You are going to be one busy lady! :)

I wondered what to do with all of my leftover sock yarn, and I started an afghan that I call the Full Body Sock Blanket. The squares areknit on the bias, and the resulting stripes make for interesting designs when the squares are knit together. Well, I am running out of my own leftover sock yarn. Since you make so many socks, would you be interested in selling me some of your left over sock yarn, such as Regia, that is sock yarn weight and machine washable? Originally, I had planned this blanket to be a long term project, but I have become obsessed with it. Since my original "rules" prohibit me from purchasing sock yarn just to knit squares, I must resort to begging yarn from other sock knitters! Thanks for considering this.
Your knee socks are gorgeous, by the way. Lucky legs that get to wear them.

I love the Canadian colors! I have three so far, and I really, really like 'em. My sock yarn stash is slowly getting out of control, but it's a good scary. *G*

Posted by: moiraeknits at April 28, 2006 5:30 PM

I am! I hope. First making some stops at the Thrift stores for pans and jars and all things dying...

Posted by: Liz at April 28, 2006 9:57 PM

WOW, you have gone sock mad. I love this colorway:
Canadian Fashion 4729 . But I can't belive the price 6.00 EUR...tha's about 30 Nis...I don't think I paid that much for my "Regia 4 Fach Haltbar" Crazy color which I picked up in the LYS in Kfar-Saba, they gets lots of yarn from Germany.

BTW, for anyone else who might want to order.
I've used: http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/tr
(copy at past the web site address and chose the language)
becaues I don't know German and they do ship internationaly...at least judgeing by this:

>Supply and forwarding expenses
>Supplies take place in principle insured against >vorkasse at the price from at present 3.90 euro
>(conditions 16.04.2006). Payment via PAYPAL is >possible at the end of the order procedure.
>Postage costs of the dispatch outside of Germany >please before inquire

Posted by: Karola at May 1, 2006 10:57 AM

Karola, they sell the Regia nation yarn at Carodan Farm's online shop.

If you want to try other stores, search Google or Froogle for Regia Nation 5397.
